This is true Dr.C. Not sure that I will change Pups in mine, I'm going to be using mine at more gigs before I make a decision. In the end, the Pups I am reading about are a theoretical improvement, not a given. They are just words on a page, which are up for interpretation!

The only certain mod I will be doing is a 3 string retainer changed in for the basic bar on the head stock.

I like the 4 string bar. Functional and low mass.

What tonal changes do you get in this position? Hows the B string sound?

Pulled out my StingRay 5 for the first time in a couple months, at a gig yesterday, and regretted not bringing my P5!

Doug, the changes are more ergonomic than tonal, at least to my ears. I perch on the pickup, and prefer this position. I will say that the D and G strings are the best I've had on a Precision, but I don't know if this is causal.

The B string is fantastic.

I swapped the original parchment (Steve's favourite) PG to a twneagle black one last night. My, did the change improve the looks of the bass! Now I just need some weird pot knobs...

E: All the screw holes didn't quite line up, but who cares. The wood is so soft that the screws dig into it anyway.

I need some old school p-bass sound and have both options, but can't try them before buying... Any suggestions?

Doug, change your cap to .1 value from .047. That will darken the tone.

Are you referring to the VM Jag V?

I have never had an issue with basswood sounding thinner than anything else. Especially not my VMPV.

Same here. Mine had a great P-Bass sound but the stock pickup output was too low.

I thinkbi know what you guys mean by thin sounding, I always attributed it to the big maple neck and board, though, bringing out overtones and all.

Personally I like having a complimentary counterpart to my pretty dark sounding mim p4

To my ear it lacks focus in the lows. It has a hollowNess about it. Could be just my bass.
