Squier Vintage Modified Precision V: who's got one?

I don't mean that the B strings were defective in my 5-string Sunbeam packs. I just meant that I don't like the way the B feels and sounds with the low tension of the Sunbeams, at least on my basses.

I'm a Dingwall guy, so that impacts my expectations. I'm used to extremely even tension, and an unusually clear "piano tone" on the B string.

I love the low tension feel of Sunbeams on a 4-banger, but I found the difference in tone between the B string and the E too great on my parallel-fret fivers. Just a little too round and undefined. Ditto for the Dragon Skins.

This happened with my custom 35" bass, Fender Jazz V and Ibanez ATK305, so it wasn't just a Squier thing.

Amongst DR strings, Low Riders are my favourite round for 5 string basses, but overall I prefer Balanced Tension sets. That was what finally made me satisfied enough with my VMP5 to stop modding it.

I've only used the D'Addario BT sets so far, but I imagine that I would get the same results with Kallium/Circle K. If DR made a balanced tension set in Sunbeams and/or Dragon Skins, they could just as easily become my new favourite...

I just put a set of used DR Black Beauties that I had at home and they sound amazing on the VMP5. Nice sounding low B and even sound on all strings, lets see how it goes...

I spent some time trying to get a proper intonation but I'm havin a hard time as B, E and A strings are always a bit sharp on the 12th fret, can't intonate them spot on... no problems with D and G ones...

Any good advice that could help me will be greatly appreciated?

Yeah, like we're going to work real hard to help you come to your senses!

Let me speak for everyone else on this subject: The VMP5 doesn't match your outfit. Or your hair colour. It's too big/too small/whatever bugs you.

You really need to get rid of it right now. In fact, you should post it right this minute, and you need to put a really low price on it, because nobody likes Nordstrand pickups.

The Fender's are smoother but still have some clank up top. The Nordy Vintage winds are the smoothest Alnico P bass pickups I've heard. Then there are Barts, which have a much higher extension up top, not clanky or annoying, actually the cleanest and deepest and smoothest sounding P Bass pickup I have ever tried. The slap sound its actually kinda hi-fi ish and pretty.

So went to breakfast with the bandleader/guitarist, was asking his advice about a couple of Dingwalls I've been looking at. The conversation went on for a while when he looked at me and said "I like the white one," referring to my stock VM P5. He further explained he could hear every note I played with it. So he would just as soon I played that over my P5, Zon 5/1 or buy a new bass (been looking for a lighter practice bass). The rest of the band likes it as well. So do I spend thousands more and possibly buy a bass don't care fore as well, or spend $100 on lighter tuners and just use the $299 bass?

Will lighter tuners really make that much difference? I would have thought the biggest area to save weight in would be chambering the body - but you run the risk of changing the sound I would expect.

I'm experimenting almost the same here... My band loves the VMP5 because the can hear every note. It's stock, just a string change... That bass just kicked my AmDlx JBV but t...
