Oh, it's growing on me, and I dig it, but nothing will ever top BSSM. I've reserved myself to that fact. I'll be spinning the new one for awhile, though.
Definately like the new album, like someone metnioned good combination of some of the funk elements of BSSM and the melodic greatness of Californication. I think Flea's bass playing is the best I've ever heard it, he's turned into a really awesome pocket player. Kedis' voice is still the weakest link, but it has always been, and i think he pulls more weight on this album than probably ever before. And the guitar work is awesome.
Number one reason to buy it, to cop all of flea's new basslines.

Hahahah, I love the comment about the 12 year old girls! With the exception of the title track, By The Way, had very little radio friendly material, definitely not an album 12 year old girls would listen to, or let alone appreciate. I see 12 year olds listening to songs like Scar Tissue, Californication, Under the Bridge, and Give It Away more than anything on BTW and Stadium Arcadium (except maybe Dani California).
For what it is worth, I love every Chili Peppers album from BSSM on. Mother's Milk is ok. For their entire career, they have been maturing and growing......not only as indivuals, but as songwriters. They are less about partying and playing this crazy music, and now are more about writing and crafting the best songs they can.
I think the new album shows that. I think it is very solid with lots of really great songs. Musically it is incredible. The lyrics and vocals could be a bit better. JF is on fire, and Flea has stepped up a bit from BTW (although I am not a fan of some of his new tones).
The new album is by far their most versitle album to date. So many different songs, that stand out from each other and from other albums. Yeah there are a few tunes that sound like BTW and Californication, but as a whole this album sounds nothing like either of those albums IMO.

I like the album. I didn't like it at first, liked it a lot after a few hours and now like it a little less than that but still.
I put the songs on my Mp3 player and am now in the process of erasing the songs I like least to complete my "best off". So far Slow cheetah and Hey yo had to go.

I won't lie, when I first got this I was REALLY underwhelmed... but wow.
It is definitely starting to grow on me with some of these songs that are seemingly boring and mundane at first glance but with more listens start to blossom out. There are definitely some songs I still don't like but as a whole the cd is starting to sound much better to my ears. Frusciante does some wonderful things with guitar and vocals. And I still can't take Flea's tone for the most part, but some of his lines are definitely fun to play.
All I can say about the BSSM debate is don't even compare the two. BBSM has a special place in my heart and I have accepted that the magic of that cd will probably never be duplicated again. Let Stadium Arcadium be its own creature. Everyone whined about by the way not having 'funky' songs so the band goes and makes "fake" funk songs like hump de bump, storm in a teacup, etc (and these aren't the stronger songs!) These guys made plenty of funk-punk cds, go back through their catalog....they're moving on now.
And on a final note....frusciante isn't usually one for overdubs and lots of guitar tracks, but there were times on this cd when i could have sworn navarro was back in the band.

Agreed, it does take some acclimation, but it is a rather good album once you listen to it enough to "get it". Same experience I had with "by the way", btw

i have listened to this album all the way through 2ce now and i love it, theres some really really nice songs on there, the bass line for the song 'If' reminds me of the bandlands song for some reason, love it, theres some pretty funky songs on there, not many, and rocky songs, but its nothing like theyve ever done, the song stadium arcadium is nothing like anything theyve done, its got a western thing goin on, awsome album, a double album full of awsome songs

Bought the album on tuesday. I've listened to it all the way through a bunch of times, and have a good enough feel for it to give an honest review.
It's good. Buy it. Flea's basswork is better than it has been in years. Can't relate to the "tone" comments you guys have been talking about, but he cuts lots of the tracks real nice, and some of the basslines had lightbulbs going off in my head...There'll surely be 5000 singles released off this album, so enjoy the nice tracks before they blow up and you hear them all over the place. For now, i'm definitely partial to the 2nd disc (mars). "Hard To Concentrate" is top notch, that guitar/bass outro! Ahhh. The 2nd, 3rd, and 4th tracks on the second disc....such a great sequence.

My opinion of this album is that there are a lot of songs with fun colours and textures, and there's some grade A tunes on there too. There's some filler admittedly, but not as much as you might think. Hump de Bump is worth the price of entry on it's own, but if that doesn't do it for you there's excellent tracks like Tell Me Baby, Animal Bar, C'Mon Girl, Readymade, Storm in a Teacup... the list goes on. Also, the last two minutes or so of Turn It Again are a pretty good Frusciante freak-out if you think he may have forgotten how to play.
After more listens, I am really digging this cd. Lots of good tunes on here, and john has never played better.
Yeah John is the real highlight on this album. His soloing has improved, IMO. And as always his rythym playing is very catchy.Tim Cole said:
