Damn! I'm kinda shocked at the responses here.

My favorite album is BSSM. I hate Californication, and can tolerate By the Way. This album was going to make or break them in my book...

Just got it - and listened to th first 2 minutes of the 1st 8 songs on the way home from work. I think it kicks butt. I was going to start a post saying "the boys are back in town" as in the chili peps are finally back to some of what they used to do.

I ain't crazy about Keidis' newer singing style, but I think these songs are like a perfect mix of BSSM and By the Way. I really liked what I heard so far on the first listen. Last 2 albums I had to listen to a lot before I "kinda" liked some of it. I'm looking forward to listening to the whole thing.

Ok, after a few more listens, I've gotten past the lyrics. There is definitely a terrible ratio of filler to good songs, but that's not to say there aren't any good songs. I really like 21st Century, Charlie, Slow Cheetah (especially the ending), She's Only 18 (surprisingly sounds like OHM), and Torture Me. I also love Warlocks and Hump-de-Bump, except for Mr. Kiedis. Man, I could listen to that cowbell solo all day. But 21st Century is definitely my favorite of the bunch, that's a great one.

Edit: you know, I'm giving it a fourth listen, and I may have spoke too soon. There is a lot of excellent music here, especially on the second disc. I just can't recall the names of the ones I like. Great guitar work.

After listening to clips of all the songs on iTunes, I bought the album. I don't love every song, but there are plenty that I do really dig. To me, their sound has matured nicely from the raw funk vibe of BSSM. Flea's bass playing has never been better. He still oozes funky grooves, but his arsenal of different flavors is much improved. If they continued to churn out the same sounding albums again and again, we'd all be slagging them for being one dimensional. I agree that Anthony's singing is possibly the weakest component of the new album, but it's still a big part of what defines the RHCP sound.

Listening to it now - finishing disc 1. I'm hoping that disc 2 is better because disc 1 is probably my least favorite of any RHCP I've ever heard. VERY disappointed so far.

Apparently I've incurred the wrath of all of the BSSM fans. I apologize... but the chorus to that song is just irritating. The rest of the song isn't even that bad, but the chorus is simply awful (IMO, of course). I love every track on that album (even the silly 'They're Red Hot') but I skip that song every single time.

As for the new album... I bought it today, but haven't yet listened to it. I hope I end up liking it, 'cause it was expensive!

Agreed. I really like the songs Slow Cheetah, Torture Me (though the horn part sounds cheezy), and Dani California.

Though I do hope the Mars disk is better than Jupiter.

I don't like By the way. I don't like Stadium Arcadium. I would of prefered two more lesser versions blood sugar sex magic instead of two more lesser versions californication. People long for blood sugar sex magic because their new stuff just isn't as good. Change can be good. But when it changes into somethings like By the way, I really don't see how it can be good.
