No 29 thanks (i like it) I followed your instructions , still having hard time getting a photo , will keep trying

So many people (including myself) want XL back that I actually did dare to ask Ned himself if he could start making them again. He kindly replied that no, he couldn't. Unfortunately, Gibson has the sole right to produce Steinberger instruments, and they have no interest in licensing or selling this right to others, even to Ned himself. I suggest that we stop bothering Ned and come up with some more productive suggestions

I was seriuosly thinking to write Ned about that, but now I won't: thank you for sharing Ned's reply.

My suggestion is that Ned should think to produce again instruments made entirely, or in part (neck) with composite material, but I don't think he will do it in a short time.

I will wait to test the new Radius bass, but from what I heard in some clips on youtube the timbre of this bass is far away from old Steinberger basses.

If it will be confirmed, ok no problem but I won't wait anymore Gibson nor Ned.

NS is known for his restlessness, only forward shifting. For sure the Radius is another of his strikes*. Bassists gonna get one, same as they do with other big name novelties and they do well of course.
But i fully agree to TJ when saying there's no other coming close to the Carbonitas and that's the point: there's many folks waiting on the resurrection of the paddle, wide 5- and best also a 6-stringer too!

*i consider it as not that big though, kinda Synapse with winged body. :-/

Finally got a decent shot of the flipped XL-2UF in action:

Looks tidy , Is that a piece of something covering the vol & tone control holes ? Did you have much difficulty drilling the faceplate ? If you wanted to fully convert it "cover those holes" It shouldnt be too difficult .

It's simple self-adhesive black foam padding, which happened to come in a size perfect for covering the three holes. This bass had a long history of being flipped and un-flipped before it got to me, so I didn't do the drilling (or the minor zero-fret filing). It was in righty dress when I got it, so I had to swap everything again.

I don't think I'll ever fill in the holes, as even though I doubt I'll ever sell the bass, it may very well out-last me, and then it would be nice if it could go to either a left-hander or a righty. I like its versatility.

By the way, I'm hanging it from Ned's Boomerang http://thinkns.com/instruments/systems.php (scroll down the page a bit). The mounting hole for the pivot plate being off-center makes the bass want to pitch forward when hung normally. The Boomerang puts the bass right where I want it and keeps it there.

so thats 'the boomerang':hmm: ill look into getting one of those . saw one about 6 mths ago for sale with a S B bass on ebay wasnt sure what it did though . ive been looking at an easy way of strapping up , looks comfortable ! . when i pack or set up i loosen off (not too much) the swivel plate so when it locks at the back its not stressing out . given as hard an item it is to come by i give it equal consideration .

Just got a "new" bass in my family... a fabulous mint XL25 Wide (thank you, Don!), an extraordinary thundering Demoiselle named Emily III. (after Rolls Royce's famous Spirit of Ecstasy also called Emily, a well traveling experienced Lady). ;)

In comparison to the rather petite neck of the L2/5...

Madre de Dios - that's exquisite!

Question - are those Status Graphite strings? I'm looking at the length at the jaws which makes me think so.

Wow, congrats with a rare amazing beauty! I've been hunting for these. It would be cool to hear your opinion on how it sounds compared to the 4-stringers as well as the "narrow" Steiny :)

Thank you all my friends and enthusiasts... yes, this is a rare bird not only for its small numbered production but also for the rather unique sound she's providing.
Just changed the strings from Rotosound .45-.130 to the GHS .40-.126 (both stainless and both slightly too short for the XL25's scale...); since the strings are brand new i need another week to play them down a little, i'll let you know my comparison in sound to the L2/5 then.
First of all impressions, the XL is a bat with a rather thick and large neck; the 16,5mm spacing is a bit more usual then the L's 14mm, the XL is slightly heavier, 3,8kg to 4.1kg
The L's control with its passive V/V/T config (active pups tough) is quite broad, while the XL (V/P/TB stacked) is a tone monster, slightly turns give dramatic changes in tone and so from deep growling to crisp highs everything is possible.
Quite a bit unfair to compare them, the L tends a little to B-string stratitis* (would say 1/3 of a db gets lost in the signal), the XL has not such a lack, this is the best 5th string i ever heard (and i had the choice from 5 Warwicks of the same production and some pretty good MusicMans...)
So i'll take my time to play now and give you another, second impression when getting accommodated with.

*best to handle with adequate pup- and a slightly elevated bridge-setting.
