Yeah, funny how we all like something different. I like the sound of Slinkys but the couple of times I tried them they went dead really fast and I removed them sooner than any other strings I can think of. And I love old roundwounds! 
I bought my Stingray used, but it was only about two months old. The original owner seemed to like the idea of a five string but couldn't adjust to them, so he bought and sold a fiver a few times and I was lucky enough to get one of them. I got an essentially brand new bass that was only 8 weeks old for about 2/3 the price of a brand new one and it's been my #1 ever since. A wonderful bass.
Unfortunately I have 5 basses now and no way to justify another, so it will probably be a while before I add a newer Stingray, if I ever actually do. I'd have to decide to sell one of those five first and I just don't want to do that. Although I do think I know which it would be ....
