Stingray 5 Club!

Yeah, funny how we all like something different. I like the sound of Slinkys but the couple of times I tried them they went dead really fast and I removed them sooner than any other strings I can think of. And I love old roundwounds! :laugh:

I bought my Stingray used, but it was only about two months old. The original owner seemed to like the idea of a five string but couldn't adjust to them, so he bought and sold a fiver a few times and I was lucky enough to get one of them. I got an essentially brand new bass that was only 8 weeks old for about 2/3 the price of a brand new one and it's been my #1 ever since. A wonderful bass.

Unfortunately I have 5 basses now and no way to justify another, so it will probably be a while before I add a newer Stingray, if I ever actually do. I'd have to decide to sell one of those five first and I just don't want to do that. Although I do think I know which it would be ....

That is a great deal! I've got 2 basses and seeing if I can justify a 3rd lol!

Guess I gotta join the club! Just took delivery of this sweet 2011 lefty SR5. Sounds great, feels amazing, and is much more versatile than I expected it would be. That EQ is powerful! Plus, it’s only 9.4lbs according to the seller’s scale. The strings are dead as hell though, so if anyone has a recommendation for general-purpose strings for these guys, I’d love to hear it.

I’ve also never seen a “regular” with a maple board and white inlays, but I think it’s kinda cool. I think I saw a 20th or 25th anniversary model with that combo, but binding as well.

Nice! The white inlays are a subtle touch, almost makes the fretboard look markerless unless you look a little closer. And, yes, the EQ is quite potent. My knobs are usually within 1/8 of a turn from the center detente.

I liked the sounds of Ernie Ball Slinkys on my Stingrays, but thought they went dead WAY too fast - and I love the sound of dead roundwounds! So I won't recommend them.

If you want rounds, I think DR Lo Riders sound phenomenal on Stingrays. I prefer the nickels but, if you want a bright sound, the stainless steels will give you exactly that. Those are farily stiff feeling strings so, if you prefer a more supple feel, then I'd suggest DR Sunbeams if you want nickels or DR Hi Beams if you want steels. Those two sound similar to the Lo Riders but are round core and have a much softer feel under your fingers.

I've also liked GHS Pressurewounds and Ken Smith Burners on my Stingray 5s

FWIW, I've gotten pretty good string life out of all of those strings, especially the Lo Riders (I've gone over two years on a set of nickel Lo Riders before, but usually change them after a year or so).

I love tort (all my basses with pickguards are torted! :D) but, on that finish, I suspect black would help draw your eye more to the red so it's easier to see the grain. Seems like something you might want with a translucent finish. I suspect the white pickguard could have the opposite effect. And, despite being a huge tort fan, I'm not sure that tort would look good on that finish.

Or I could be totally wrong...

Agreed!

I've gotten some decent pics of my honeyburst, but it still looks even prettier in person.
