Old OM over new OM 100% of the time.
The first tour after Chris left the drummer was really rough, dropped the beat with almost every fill, just could not keep it together with Al, is was super disappointing, he's gotten a lot better since then, but Chris was just so much better.
Everything was just so much better...

Played with them before and I got bored pretty quickly. Reggae with Clutch riffs sprinkled in. Maybe they'll be different with Tim Sult playing.

That is pretty much exactly my sentiment as well. I think most metal just became a "hey look I can play this faster than anyone else" game. Lost the point IMHO.
Also I had never heard of these guys, but they came up in an AMPS thread. Digging them today at work while we pack up as MI is flooding.

One thing I'm bitter about leaving N. Virginia is that I never took advantage of all the great bands playing within 3hours away.

That is pretty much exactly my sentiment as well. I think most metal just became a "hey look I can play this faster than anyone else" game. Lost the point IMHO.
I was in high school when thrash was real popular, and guess metal was what made me get a guitar in the first place. I still remind myself when I press on a distrotion pedal not to crunch power chords away at top speed, like it was ingrained since a kid. Just like don't slap and pop or tap when I grab a bass. Slow down and enjoy the tones, and groove proper. Not this genre but what opened my eyes bass wise I saw Karl Denson's Tiny Universe which is a way way funky band, and this bass player had such tight funky grooves, but not once did he slap, not once.

Tim played the whole set with them when I saw them, but I didn't think he added much. I can see how they wouldn't be everyone's cup-o-tea. I like them a lot though.
trade the Raton for Oxfuzz?
I did not like Lionize at all. With or without Tim.
When I saw them the biggest problem wasn't playing but the mix. I don't think it was their own engineer because the guy was trying to mix them like a regular rock band. The guitar and keys was the loudest thing in the mix. Plus Al needs to work out how to get a more consistent sound because when he had his distortion on his bass sounded great but when he turned it off he got lost (again partially because the guitar and keys were so loud).
I love the old Om but I feel like they had maxed out what they could do there and he had to bring in new elements. I think if nothing else the new Om is original. It may only be a step in what could become something great. I really can't even say it is doom anymore, or any genre for that fact and I think that is pretty awesome.
I remember being drunk with Geoff at that show and us both thinking we needed to be stoned to like what they were playing and that getting another Taylor Gourmet sandwich sounded like a much better idea haha.
Quimby posted this in the EGC thread Geoff made. Sounds pretty similar to mine, and does a good job of demonstrating the piano-like stingray tone I was trying to explain:
