Stoner/Doom Bassists #65: Wasted Under the Brim

Man I was fooling around with my Waterstone Lord Kitchener Fackenbacher bass I scored on ebay for like $212 bucks shipped to see how many frets I needs to file only two high spots so not too bad to fix, been putting it off to the side with all the buying and selling of pedals, and guitars, but man I really get the Ric love and the fake Ric love now, that single coil in the neck just growls and has clarity and not muddy at all, and the bridge grinds without being treble harshness and of the of course the middle position is great too, need to fix those two high frets pronto.
There's always hydrogen... free drum machine software that's been around forever and it's easy to set up. Sounds like a drum machine not real drums but I have a buddy who has been using it for years for recording solo ideas. I'm sure your drummer could hear the different parts.
Tons of software drum machines out there but most need a hardware midi controller to really use them and will cost ya. Hydrogen can can be set up with just your mouse.
Any daw is fine if you put in some time to learn how it works. I've been using reaper for the past couple years and have been happy with it. I try others and keep coming back to it. It has a long trial, it's inexpensive, great feature set and lots of online help. Also the coolest name and program icon.
I use the crowing tool listed below, since it makes it a breeze to crown, just move from side to side, I am such a newby that I didn't want to push my luck and just go very slow until level, and use the same tool for remove string cut marks on frets, but didn't take long to do my last guitar that had a high fret. I also use a needle file set a little in the top first. I will link below all the tools I use. A level, the files, and the fingerboard protector. I also have a dremel polishing tool kit and want to try that for just bringing the shine back to dull frets too, so a guy online using that, worked great, grabbed a kit at Walmart and the rubbing compound is in there, probably could car rubbing compound too. The level tool gives you instructions on finding the high fret, and work it up and down the fret because sometimes just part of the fret is high.

I want to contribute but I have nothing relevant to talk about. My head has been buried in the world of DIY lately. I had a simple one knob fuzz idea that has turned into a 4 knob overdrive/booster design.
I plan on over-thinking this for a few more weeks and then not build it.
After a month or two I'll start the process over.
I find it funny that I obsess so much over gear but I couldn't tell you who my favorite band is or even the last show I went to that I wasn't playing.
I've been to the record shop 3 times in the last month and left with nothing because I couldn't think of any music I wanted to listen to...

I hear you, you get your head on something and push everything else out. so obsessed with pedals, the other day I was wnating to just go through Youtube and play some bands and I was like what was the name of that band and that band and what, was drawing blanks was kind of creepy actually, like is this what happens in your forties, early Alzheimer's here I come, I'll be that old guy wearing only pajamas walking up a major interstate highway in between the lanes, lol.

I read a comment on a music blog that no old metal musicians actually listen to metal. I can see why that happens. I know how to write and play music. It doesn't mean that I'm an huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuggggggeeeee music fan.
I have friends who have followed bands all over the country and still go see bands they've seen 100 times and buy all sorts of music and they don't play an instrument.
I can't understand how someone can be a huge music fan and not want to be on stage playing it.
I bet they assume that since I've been in bands for 16 years that I must really loooooooooooove music.
On a side note an old band mate who has been doing cover bands for a few years posted a pic on facebook with him playing for a bikini contest. I'm pretty sure that'll never happen to me.

This problem is why i spend so much time here. Folks coming up with new stuff or old stuff i forgot about. Been great.
im going to see wintersun on august 6th at the fillmore. itll probably be the first show ive actually paid to see in a year.
My wife goes from 0 to rage now every time I play a youtube pedal demo video, lol. She's so sick of it. Pedals are just fun, they're like my little friends down there giving me confidence ;p. I think a few more pedal toys then I need to get some nice amps somehow... wife's drum set is killing me right now. She would have to have the nice **** right? 
Oh and on a side note, about 36 hours no cigarette... I keep goin from not thinking about it to wanting to demolish the world. About another day and a half I should have the taste out of my mouth.

The wife wants to see the Killers in August. I like them alright and will probably have a good time.
I do love some bands immensely though. Sleep and Weedeater at MDF were amazing.
I also try to catch the Pissed Jeans when they're in town as well.
But...I only have one or two albums from each of them.
I have the same problem I can never think of music to buy when I want some new stuff to listen to. Sometimes I think to myself that I shouldn't buy so much music in the genre I play. That way that song stuck in my head doesn't end me thinking its a original riff and trying to use it. Think about it, how many times has anyone brought in a song then another member busts you out and says "hey that's so n' so, this track!" ? I've done it a couple times.
Killers should be pretty solid live. Think I'm getting dragged to a Mumford and Sons concert, and I'd rather commit suicide.
My one guitarist, our main riff wizard, intentionally listens to very little new music because he's paranoid it will slip into something he's writing.

I haven't seen any bands in so long probalby going on two years other than a local alternative band we are good freinds with and plays lots of kid friendly places.
Props on no cigarettes!!! I don't believe this but I have taught the little guy that people who smoke are losers, because he knows loser is a bad word, we really don't feel that way, but don't want him to have a habbit that wastes money and risks cancer when he gets older, It backfired though, when we were in PA this guy standing outside a restaurant to smoke, held the door open for my whole family, and Micah says you see that guy Joe he is a loser, all I could say was oh you saw the cigarette, lol, my brother who smokes was in a histerical fit of laughter, I felt bad lol.My wife goes from 0 to rage now every time I play a youtube pedal demo video, lol. Oh I am so addicted to youtube pedal and gutiar/bass demos, and my girlfriend gets so pissed at me too, and if I sneak upstairs to the other TV to watch them then I am am not spending enough family time with her and the little guy, as much as the little guy loves pedals he calls youtbue boring boring Joe, oh not pedals again. And my girlfriend constantly bitches at me for being online, you on that Bass forum again, lol.

Yeah I draw blank thoughts all the time. I was excited to hear Tame Impala on the radio the other day, I know that is a double-edged sword, as underground seems to maintain the quality of music for music sake better, but was a relief to hear something tasteful on an actual radio channel. The are huge in Australia so was just a matter of time though, but even the girlfriend was shaking her booty in the passenger seat to them.
Isn't Josh Homme like that too. Well probably a lot of people who want to stay fresh are that way, the funny think to me is the more I learn my scales, modes, the more song riffs I recognize, I guess with 12 notes there has to be lots of repeated partial riffs anyway. Lately I have been sinking my head into learning more guitar chords, so I don't play the some old ones all the time, the trick is finding ones that do alright with fuzz and dirt, and being a bit of a treble hater some chords just make my ears squint from the brightness.
