They're pretty bland tone wise IMO, and can be had in the US for sometimes less than $100. It's got a pretty neutral tone. If you need an indestructible SS amp it's good for the price, but I wouldn't overpay for it.

As the resident SS Peavey fanatic, I say absofvckinglutely! Run lots of cabs with it, preferably 18s, and turn that sucker up man.
I do agree with you to a certain point. Once Peavey started the mark series, they get more sterile as the number goes up, they also lose that amazing grind when you turn them up. But Mark IV is still early on, so it should still rock hard.
I've heard that they're loud and dependable - people have mixed opinions about the sound. I wouldn't pay much for it ($150-$175), but prices really vary between the United States and Europe.
It definitely shouldn't cost as much as a solid state Sunn, and it should be priced much, much lower than any tube amp. Hope that helps.
Crank that pre! Well I like the sound on my Mark III. Peavey SS grind. Picked it up for 50 bucks. Would be great for a crusty punk/sludge band.

I say try before you buy. Vintage is cool but many people look back on old gear a little too fondly. I love my old amps but my new amps sound way better and are way louder.
That being said...Peaveys are pretty solid amps but they don't carry the same vintage cool that Sunn and other brands do. I guess what I'm saying is don't pay too much for it.
Around here there has been a lot of the opening band is the new closer deal. Since the theory is people will leave after the local opening band plays. We always give the touring band the final say as to when they want to play. I personally don't give a fug. I'd rather close the show anyways. By then people are liquored up and ready to rock.
I run a SansAmp BDDI into the effects return on my old Peavey, and it sounds pretty good to my ears.

one of the few pieces of gear john and i agree on, i think these things are pigs. just loud with very meh tone. again, if you want an amp you can drop off a building and use it 5 minutes later, an 80s peavey SS is the way to go. i had a mark VI, and i hated it lol.

If it's all sorted out ahead of time I don't mind playing last - it's the last minute shady "Well, bob's got to work in the morning and I need to take my kid to the dentist so we really shouldn't be asked to play last, blah blah blah" ******** that I don't like.
Ever time I or see Peavey Mark IV I think of those old conversion vans with the Custom Mark III logos.

I'm not opposed to playing last. In fact we normally do it. Just not in that situation, where the headliner and main touring band is actually the main attraction.

DBD, do you have any Epi Tbirds or anyone else with EPI Tbirds in the house, do you have any interest in some chrome covers for them. I bought that damn set off Ebay and they don't fit on the American TBird pups, covers are too small, and guessing they might fit on the Epi ones if they are different sized than the American ones. Anyway I am probably going to list them in the classifieds but rather doomer discount them if someone wanted to get their chrome cover on! It's these.
