I had some dimarzio's but I ended up getting rid of them. They didn't sit in a mix well for me. A little light in the lows for me. Had a nordy p/j set with a nj4sv and it was a little too modern for my taste. I have happened into 2 sets of p/j's out of a 80's p bass special (duff bass). I love those pups to death. They look like Seymour Duncan quarter pounders. I definitely like them better then any QP loaded bass I've owned. I liked the nordys when i used the suck button on the SVT but not after I changed my settings.

Cool. Yeah, Nordys might be a bit pricey. haha.
I'll probably just buy somebodies Squier Duncan Designed pups 1st. Since I have experience with those and they didn't sound bad. I think just having the J in the bridge is very much to my liking :)
Something out of an 80s bass would be nice though.
A thick P and hot J would probably work out ok.

Grande's? I'm out of the loop.
I wanting some J flavor mixed in with my P. But we are tuning back up to Drop C I think. So it might not be that big of a deal.
Drop A with the SB-2 P was mud city. But my strings weren't thick enough, and I usually beat the **** out of them. That may add to the issue.

Oh, I didn't know they did bass pickups.

I'll have to do some clip hunting tomorrow. I remember hearing a GFS P that sounded fantastic up against some other high dollar ones a year or 2 ago.

I keep forgetting that this genre encompasses a few different ideas of what stoner/doom is. Are you looking for swampy old school or modern bark?

****, that bass build in the last thread has got me wanting to learn how to play (and build) a fretless. i have an ibanez soundgear at home but it'd sound like a pile of ****, and i don't reeeeally like how it plays. perhaps a ****** old SX/hondo/squier P is the way to go.

I'm playing an active 6 string Ibby right now. I like the tight response but it's too clear.
But I haven't been able to play on the tube amp with fuzz.

I should be ok once I get some heavy Roto 77s on something with 2 pickups.

Honestly if I had something that was old school sounding set up with real low action and a thinish/flatter neck I would be good.

I like modern bark for some thrashiness occasionally. Ideal modern bark would be a EBMM.

I like the expressions you can get on the sliding. And the string being pressed against your fingertip instead of metal kills off a lot of treble giving you a warmer sound, perfect to fuzz out. Combine that with how smooth the sound of a fretless is and it just sounds like you're gliding between notes.

Yeah for as long as I've been involved in bands, it had been from the production side (I used to do a ton of live sound before I really got back into playing) so my knowledge of the business side is embarrassingly lacking.

We've talked with them too, basically they weren't interested.

And yeah, I mean we're ok but it sure would be nice to have some sort of real distribution network (i.e. not bandcamp and website) for our existing stuff and maybe a little help on the next album. Everything we've done has been self funded. **** be esspessive yo.

I have a Spector NS2A that had the Spector branded PJ EMG HZ pickups in it. They sounded ok, but the bass really came alive when I replaced them with EMG actives.

I prefer a JJ setup, but I do like the versatility you get with PJ. For the Thin Lizzy tribute I just solo the P pickup and bam - P bass. Or turn the J back up and it's about as classic as a heavy rock bass tone as you'll get.

And about this fretless business...MWAH.

If you want a really cheap fretless that actually sounds decent get a SX, well its actually a Douglas, but same website. The whole intonation thing is tough at first but easily not a problem, you just always have to listen. I have rounds on my fretless P, so I get more off a Jaco simmering harmonics sound, as opposed to the dull thump of a upright. Sliding is fun.

But I gotta do something about this bridge, broke another E string today, down by the bridge like always.



BIGGEST NEWS OF ALL!!!

I did receive the power supply, it was in my mailbox! Took it to practice tonight, and hooked her up, it works and it brings THE THUNDA BABY!!!:bassist: Sounds oddly enough like a Concert head...I got the gain and distortion cranked for some sweet grinds and growls and rawr's. Pushes that old Acoustic great. When I kick on my Colossus all hell breaks loose in a wooly fuzz, It's great. I love it. Worth the wait. Worth the money.

I was using Rotosound 77s for a while but switched off to 88s. Wasn't sure how the tapewounds would work, but it's sounding pretty sweet so far. We'll see how it works in a band setting soon enough! As for breaking strings, I had d'addario nylons on when I first got this bass and the bridge was a triangular piece of corian that the strings sat on (that has since been replaced by a Badass) and the bridge came to such a point it sliced right through the nylon tape on three of the strings, so I know your pain.

Damn Thunderburn is very close to a name I've been favoring for a project I wanted to start, so I can't support it :p

I suggest Booze Face.
