Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread Part 11 - "Bath Time"

I'll be skipping mdf this year after going the last 3 years. Saw some great bands last year but people were real dicks and kind of soured it for me.

I know there's a small but awful group of uber-troo fans that sit there and mope and whine about everyone that isn't "real" black metal or "blackthrash". They can get f'd but overall I've found people to be mostly awesome.

Yeah KC's is ehh and Firehouse has awful polices regarding money. One of my friends used to book at Firehouse and we got Truckfighters to play so that show was good ,but other than that it's tough to get people there. People in PVD are spoiled and if it's too far away from downtown (and I'm talking like 1/2 a mile) it's tough to get them to go. We're opening for Jucifer in July at AS220 which is always a pretty good time, and I'm trying to set something up for the end of August for some friends in Brooklyn there. PVD is weird because there is so much of a diverse scene and you have to be out to mingle alot to get people out. You don't go out to bars and see the people you know, they don't come out. Luckily I've been nominated by the rest of the band to be that guy most of the time. You don't have to play alot you just have to be out alot and not be a dick. Lately it seems like every time we book a really good show another really good show gets booked on the same night somewhere. We booked Truckfighters and YOB ended up playing across town. I just get pissed because I want to be at both shows. ;)

Last year it was the crust punk kids and all the people that were just absolutely wasted being idiots because they've been drinking all day. As a former bouncer in a big college town I can't deal with that crap anymore. At least normal shows only have a few.

That said MDF is really cool and a great experience especially if you've never gone before. I was in a band with Evan, one of the founders, and it is impressive what the whole festival manages to do. I bet it possibly brings bands from the highest amount of different countries than any other annual festival in the world.

:D

Well feel free to shoot me. An email if you're looking for someone else to play. Late August (Labor Day Weekend) is the Stoner Hands of Doom down in CT so you might want to avoid playing around that.

I used to do a lot of sound and have worked at the Met a few times - it was either completely dead or so full you couldn't move. I thought that was kind of weird.

I will say that it's one of the best run festivals I've ever gone to, and I've been to many over the years. The NE fest is run well but they've booked nothing but crap for the past 8ish years. The NJ and Milwaukee fests were always total clusterf's.

Oh yeah I'm friends with Nick the drummer from Kanerko. I've known him for years, but I haven't seen him much lately.
He is one crazy talented drummer. I was so frustrated that we had to pass off the USO trip to them - we were on the road at the time but recommended them to the promoter and they took it and killed. I mean, I couldn't be more happy for them for doing it but I wanted to play that so badly...

I'll try and set something up. There is alot of really good bands around that we're friends with and I always try to set something up that people will be into the whole night as opposed to some of these shows where it's all over the place genera wise. I used to play Ralph's alot and am pretty good friends with Mike up there and I couldn't tell you how many times we've been tossed onto bills that went anywhere from acoustic girl folk to black metal to Rockabilly to pop stuff. It never works. It's everyones friends just coming out to see their friends play and split. Which always sucks for out of town bands. It doesn't take much to set up a show of similar acts or acts that will go over well with a certain audience.

Yeah isn't that how it always happens. "Hey are you guys interested in doing this awesome show/ tour?" Sorry we're not around. It's good that you got to hook them up with that.

Cool man.

Yeah Ralph's gets weird outside Metal Thursday. Chris and Samantha do an unbelievable job there - the most straightforward and honest promoters I've ever had the pleasure of working with. And yes. I just complimented a promoter. ;)

If you're looking for other NY bands check out Killjoy - https://www.facebook.com/pages/KILLJOY/55613087762 - these guys smoke. We've been working to trade shows with them for a few months.

Yeah there alot better then dealing with Dicky. Vincent has always taken care of us in any band I've ever played there with, and Steve does a great job with sound usually.
Soundguy Steve! He's awesome. I've worked there dozens and dozens of time, he's always a hoot.

I'll be in touch about getting something together.
Awesome. And we will too if we get an opportunity.

I really love black metal, but the elitism of some fans gets really irritating. I don't care if it's "true" or "real." If it sounds good to me, I'm gonna listen to it.

So I have been on a pedal buying spree this last couple of days. I ordered a Greedtone Overdrive and an MXR CAE MC402 Boost/Overdrive to try and I got a Fulltone Catalyst a few weeks ago. I'm not planning on keeping everything but I want to see/play everything I can. The Fulltone is really cool but it was making a strange ticking noise at practice so I might have to swap it or get rid of it totally. The Greedtone is quite interesting but expensive. The MC402 is the wild card. People seem to hate it and I've heard it described as a Boost and an MXR Distortion +. I don't know about you but that sounds like a killer combo. In fact that's pretty close to the pedal I've been designing for myself :(

I also pulled my Red Llama clone out of retirement. I'm going to try that up against everything I’ve got coming in. Not to mention my Voodoo bass and Ross Distortion. No one seems interested in these in the classifieds. These new pedals have to slaughter my old stuff for me to keep them.
