Got my fuse today to finish my tube head

Cannot wait to crank that head with this bass.

Another room recording from Cold Mourning practice, from this past Wednesday. Same song I posted before, rearranged, with some more vocals added by Mat. Starting to come together pretty well, though we certainly played it pretty rough as we just finished changing everything around.

edit: just heard the above after typing this post out for ages at work. ****ing heavy! what was that recorded with?^

looking for some rig thoughts!

I'm picking up my Sunn 215 cabinet tomorrow (the one johnk sold in the classifieds) - I have a 100 watt head (2x KT88s) to push through it, and it should cut the mustard in terms of volume I actually need - but, as per usual, if I can move it by myself, I need to upgrade.

I'm thinking of doing a 'bass' rig and a 'treble' rig, like a more stoned sludgy Entwhistle. Two hundred watt heads, one driving the 215 for my 'bass' rig and the other head driving a cabinet with smaller speakers - phasing be damned.

I need to experiment, but I was thinking of possibly using a sealed 610 for the treble rig - are they redundant? Is it kind of the awkward middle child of 410 and 810? I want both rigs to be approximately the same levels, and by all reports the 215 is as loud (if not louder) than all standard 410, and I want them to be approximately the same level. I have also considered using a 200 watt head (4x KT88s) into the Sunn but they are hard to source in NZ.

I tune to C standard and 15 inch speakers are magnificent for it as we all know, but I also love a trebly Ric tone going through 10s and tubes.. so why not best of both worlds?

Niff my 100 watt tube head (with dirt) will be into a BIG ported 1x15, and then I'll be doing a solid state head into my two 2x12's.

I don't see the reason for tubes when playing with clean sheer headroom volume. The solid state will be my real bassy side, with a VT bass for the tone shaping, and my chorus pedal for big rippling low end. I have some filters and a Octaver, but need some more time with them to decide if I'd keep them as board units. I actually like a small pedal board.

I think your treble/bassy idea is cool, I think most 6x10's are ported aren't they? Are you doing dirt on both sides?

It will be the same signal split into two different heads, no clean/dirty rigs for me as all my pedals have a blend or have amazing low end. That's also why I want to run two tube heads - I just can't get the body massaging face melting fuzz/dirt sound I want without power tubes!

I'd probably look at getting a sealed 610 built - cabinets are the most expensive part of being a musician in NZ due to shipping time, and building becomes cheaper.

Everything I've read seems that NZ AUS are the worst places for economical gear acquisition.

Guy in Australia was saying Truss Rod cavities are a big issue, he's had basses held in quarantine due to the truss rod being a possible source of contraband. Became such a problem he orders bodies and necks separate on Ebay, so he can double his chances of getting something.

Oh and I got the mudbucker off ebay, the auction had 50 min left, won at $19.49 plus ship was like $28.00.

is that the artec sidewinder? that's definitely what i would go for in that short scale beast.

I had quite a bit of customs issues with the Sunn cab coming over, I bought it months ago and can only get it now after heavy inspection. I also imported my Ric, and thank god they didn't randomly decide to hold it - only cost me $125 in extra quarantine/inspection fees, while the Sunn was closer to $500. It is a real bastard living far away from heavy gear, but we have some awesoem home grown **** to pick from. I'm picking up super loud 100 watt tube heads for about $200 each, so it makes up for it.

Yea, the Artec, 30k of fun! I wonder if any passive pickups exist over 30k, that is huge. I got it today 9/28/12, it isn't going to arrive from Hong Kong until October 18th-25th it said!

a KT88 based 100 watt for $200 is fun stuff. My amp is EL-34 based.

Sounds like you're facing some dealextreme type shipping madness - Hong Kong is pretty hard to get stuff from down this end of the earth as well. I waited 4 months for a package once.

There's currently a 200 watt KT88 sitting for about $500 (exceedingly rare). If I get this new job I'm shooting for and get paid out from my current one, it is mine and any of my wattage woes will forever disappear.

edit: just remembered one of my friends wanted to trade his 200w KT88 head for my solid state. ho ho!

I also drove around all night trying to find an 18VAC power supply for my preamp, no one has one...went to 3 different music stores and a Radioshack. Nothing. Well The Radioshack girl wasn't very helpful, because when I check online it says they have some in stock. THAT B*TCH!!! Hopefully I have enough time before practice tomorrow to pick one up.

Did I mention new better demos? They're BETTER!

That pisses me off to no end.

Overall though my biggest gripe in stores like Home depot, rat shack, GC etc where the employees never seem to know anything about the products they carry.

I figure if I can learn a bit about the product I want in 2 minutes online, they'd learn some stuff about their store/department by osmosis alone.

My Qtron took a weird voltage I got an EHX power unit I think it was 18v but forget if it was ac or dc, but worth checking into, if radio doesn't pan out.

I think I got slugged about $250 in tax for bringing my ric in.Apparently there's an extra $150 tax for semi-hollow basses,to keep Maton competitive-shame they haven't made a semi hollow bass in about 40 years...
I think what's really ridiculous here is the mark up on prices for gear.Often if you buy something cheap from the states, ship it over, pay the shipping, pay the import tax, etc, etc, you can still come away several hundred dollars better off.
Perfect example is my ric- I had it to my door from the other side of the world for $1700.Why the hell would I pay $3,000 for one near enough the same, from a shop 100kms away?

I hope some of you can help me out!

I already asked in the last thread, but since they fly by pretty quickly, I hope that you can share your thoughts on the ampeg pf 410 hlf with me!

http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f15/ampeg-pf-410-hlf-15hf-what-do-they-sound-like-920350/

My thread seems to go in the "dont mix those cabs", "check out some custom builder that does not produce in your country" direction. Which is not helpful for the question i asked.
