Most likely you don't like the preamp.
Most poweramps are designed to not color the sound. So garbage in= garbage out. That being said some poweramps have built in filters that can make things sound like turds if you aren't careful. I recommend disabling all of them.

Yamaha poweramps aren't very popular, could be a reason for that....

Then consolidate and upgrade the keeper basses, fix the pignose and find reverb and trem pedals.

Meh. It was ok but I found it too pulsy without any swirl. Also it was pretty dark so it was very hard to hear it in a mix. Having said that it was one of the first phasers I tried and my lack of experience at the time likely didn't help. I've wanted to try it again but I don't think I can go back to a non-tap tempo phaser.

Speaking of which I just traded my Tap A Phase for a Quasar DLX. The Tap A Phase was very cool but it sounds too much like a wah/filter which I already have. But if you're looking for a very vocal phaser the Cusack is it.

Ok, This 2 thread business in bananas.
Congrats on the Babies! The wife and I are trying to hold out a few years... I'm not totally done being selfish, and wanting to cross some things off of my list; travel and the like...

I plugged in the EB3 for the first time since the set to get ready for practice tonight. Here are my thoughts. The Bass is setup for Drop B, I swapped out the bridge for the Hipshot Supertone, strung it with Flat Chromes for a 5 string (132's I think), and had the nut worked on to accomodate.

Overall Impressions: The string tension is much better especially on the E. Despite the strings being very Bright the overall output especially on the E seems to have dropped and despite having heavier strings I feel like the mudbucker is overall less boomy. I also noticed that I had to bring up the volume on my Dirt Pedals. I'm not sure why the level issues, maybe something to do with string height or conductivity with the new bridge. Overall its better I just tweaked the EQ to accommodate. Should be interesting to hear it with guitar later. Still interested in swapping the pickups next.

They are both in the classifieds now lol. It was really trial and error after I picked up the Yammy in a trade.

Trial and error is totally how it feels. The few preamps I have tried I could get a"workable" tone out any of them but some just didn't have "it."
Still not sure what"it"is but recognize it when I see "it".
I'm not really a"workable" guy so the turmoil doesn't bother me.

Yeah it doesn't cut it for me either, like putting a puzzle together and missing some of the pieces, it just ain't right, lol. I don't think I want to fiddle around with preamp and power amps either, just find a head I really dig and know I have a lightweight cab to throw in the car when I hit up the guitar shops to get my bass head testing on!!!

My standby is a small stone eh4800. It's newer with the true bypass. A buddy is selling the G.O. So just getting some thoughts. He is selling a bunch of stuff so stopping over tonight I think.

I've never tried a Small Stone but I'd like to pick one up eventually. I was not overly impressed with the Whetstone. it was way too subtle for bass. The other features that I think I can't live without in a phaser are a volume control and a control to set the centre frequency, i find those incredibly useful.
