The "unfortunate thing" was Peavey shutting down the factory in Meridian and laying off all of their manufacturing employees. I haven't seen the episode either, but it sounds like it was tagged at the end with a quick update about the factory shutting down - which came after the somewhat rosier original ending. Someone that saw it can chime in if I'm wrong.
It's a bummer for sure, I heard about the closings, etc several months ago - it's sad and I feel for all of those folks that have lost jobs in Meridian. I'm sure that Hartley held out as long as he could before dropping the hammer, but it seems like they way they went about it (including filming an Undercover Boss episode in the middle of this massive shift in business operations) was ill-advised to say the least. Now they have a PR nightmare coming off of one of the worst years in the 50 year history of the company. I don't know who thought that filming that stupid reality TV show at that particular time, with all sorts of poopie hitting the fan, was a good idea.
They're an international company, so I think they'll get over this hump, but it certainly isn't going to help sales in the U.S.
