Well...that was fun, gotta say V day can actually be fun if your not single, but I am in the camp of its a stupid hallmark holiday and why cant everyday be special. Lady friend loved the necklace and bracelet I made her she couldnt believe I made them. Went for sushi. And then went and to see The Well and ATW. The local openner ended up being guys I used to be in an indie pop band with before I got into heavy music. Bought them a beer, because I was only 18 when I was in that band. The Well was, well...your typical run of the mill Sabbath worship band, nothing too exciting but some good decent riffage. ATW was fvcking phenomenal per usual, they really are stellar live. Lady friend really liked them, said shed totally go see them again. Bought theyre first LP because they were out of those when VEGA opened for them.


My lady friend keeps flaunting around her necklace and bracelet and everyone wants one now...so I think im going to start making bass string jewelry, BUT I need more strings!!! So if you guys could save your broken or dead bass strings, i be willing to buy them in bulk and pay shipping to get them.

I am coming to a similar conclusion with my band. I love the guys and the music. It's all super cool, but they like to practice the week before a show and no more. Sometimes we just free ball it. My rhythm tard and I both think we need work but the drummer and lead tard seem to think it sounds fine. Maybe because they get nothing but rave reviews from friends. Idk. Maybe the extensive precision I experienced in 15 years of marching band has molded my musical mentality. I don't see that as a bad thing. Now I don't have kids, but I have by and large the busiest schedule and haven't cancelled anything. This coupled with my constant sonic struggle is pushing me to an ultimatum. We need to figure our balance out and hold to a strict once a week practice barring sickness or emergency or I'm out. I know ultimatums are not the best idea but I have sunk to much money and time in a band run by people who are satisfied with mediocrity. Any band maintenance tips would be much appreciated.

Catapult usually rehearses weekly on monday nights. Sometimes there's a bit of weirdness depending on people being out of town and stuff, but otherwise it's pretty regular. It's nice to be able to assume we have rehearsal.

As far as cabs that can do double duty, I really dig guitar through my Faital loaded Dually. I think there are better guitar cabs out there for sure, but it will do in a pinch.

My 2000S cab can do guitar. It's a little weird sounding, but it works. Same with my little Ampeg 1x15. With socks stuffed into the ports, it actually sounds really good.

Flanger, Phaser, Chorus are modulation effects. SWIRLY NOISES!

Oh, I see. I've never used one.

There is one of these tall Peavey 412s on the local CL right now for $100, just saw it last night.

Those things are loud as hell.

Honestly, this is why I quit the band I was in last spring/summer. Great guys, fun music, but there was no consistency. I need a regular jam, or I get all cranky. Sure, I get that they had been playing these songs for years, but I haven't and I needed the rehearsal to work out breakdowns with the drummer, etc. But it was less that than the weekly "We jammin?" "Let me check" days go by "oh, drummer has work, guitard is going camping, etc"

Drove me nuts.

Pretty much every monday we rehearse. If the drummer can't make it, it's a song-writing/demo recording night at the place the vocalist and one of our guitarists live at. It's a system.

last week I asked about putting a chrome bridge cover on a newer fender hi mass bridge. I then left our corner to ask. I was met with a lot of no. Fair enough, but @tangentmusic sent me a free extra bridge he had to help with my project no questions asked (aside from what's my address). So I'd like to thank him for being so cool!

Turns out I just got the chrome cover in the mail yesterday at the same time and for giggles I tried placing it on the high mass bridge and what do you know it does fit. No worries though my first bass I ever played that I recently re acquired really needs a bridge as its rusted to hell so it did not get shipped in vain!

I repost this info on the thread I made to alert the rest of tb to this discovery and his kindness too.

Getting the parts together to put it together, and 5 other basses and guitars later today. Here is the thing in question though. Trying to decide between white strat or tele chrome knobs.

Everyone always sells their cool stuff when I have no money.

Know any drummers? Ours has decided we don't want him in the band despite trying to get him over here every week the last month. We've told him repeatedly that he's welcome in the band, but he just has to SHOW UP. That's pretty much our qualification right now. He refuses to show up, even when he said he will be there and that the drumming situation will be the hot topic of the night. And he's nigh impossible to get a hold of. He's one of those conspiracy guys who thinks he's got to be "off the grid" because the government is watching him. (Also, he's convinced that Dave Brockie of GWAR was killed by the government.) Anyway, just venting with you. We haven't really had practice since Thanksgiving, and we can't even find another drummer of any kind. Our criteria for drumming at the moment is that you have a kit and that you SHOW UP. And really, showing up is about it. Having a guy claim he plays drums while being at practice without a drum set is still marginally better than having a drummer who isn't at practice, right?

Never be in bands with these schmucks. They're impossible to get a hold of, and they don't do any promo. Yours sounds especially nuts.

(Regarding my buddy's Crate amp, he's had bad luck. Think he blew a speaker. I feel kinda bad, because my guitar rig will definitely beat his, and I'm the bassist! I guess that's the difference between having to buy new (like he does) and getting great stuff cheap used. He'll learn one day...)

If budget is a consideration, always buy used. I don't get why people don't do this. Most new stuff depreciates by like half the minute you walk out of the store with it.

I'll give you his reasoning, but I'm not sure you guys can handle it. They killed him, get this, because he said things that they didn't like. Because, you know, the government is the government. (That's basically his explanation for anything government-related.) And apparently they think a satirical parody heavy metal band is a legitimate threat to their rule? I don't know, the guy's nuts. Good drummer, but his head isn't exactly on straight.

Actually I found out last night that it is our drummer that is the practice problem. He also does all of the booking and actually does quite well at that. ****ing double edged blade I tell you.

On the bright side, I vented to the lead player and we ended up getting together to work on new material. He totally agreed with me that we need to practice more, and if not practice still get together to write. However our discussion of tone was opposite of what I wanted to hear. His perspective in a nutshell is that the bass should be felt but not heard. He doesn't really want to hear any attack and the concept of a bass cutting through the mix equates to Geddy style cut with no middle ground. I was told that between bright and clanky and murky mush, to err on the side of mush. My perspective doesn't mean much as I have zero recording experience and very limited stage experience to their vast expanse of both. Pretty off base. Probably not quitting for the time being but I will not deal with this forever.

Does he listen to any bands like Sleep, Neurosis, or Yob or Electric Wizard, or anyone in our genre at all? Because the bass is definitely heard in most of those.

I get that he might not want clanky-ness (my tone is clanky and obnoxious as shag, and I get that some people might not like that), but that comes from a relatively small part of the frequency spectrum. I feel the whole "bass should be felt, not heard" thing is kinda outdated, and to me sounds very 80s.

Ugh, that's disappointing about the tone discussion. If you're considering walking away at some point anyway, this might be a good time to pay him a little lip service, then eq your normal tone anyway (or maybe back off the treble a tiny bit as a token compromise). Chances are the dude isn't listening to your tone that much when the full band is roaring along.

This is also the conclusion that I came to. He has a good ear for tone, but wants this band to be dominated by guitar tone. I listened, smiled and nodded and said "**** you I'll do what I want tonally" in my head. To be honest they can't really afford to lose me so I am definitely in the power seat no matter how much he wants to think otherwise. They have struggled to keep a consistent bass player over the last 2 years and basically begged me to keep them as my priority ensemble. I am not the best bassist in the world by any means(relatively mediocre from my cynical realist perspective), but I am better than anything else they have come across. They know it and I know it.

My tone is loud aggressive and exceptionally dirty. Really I don't think he cares one way or the other as long as it isn't excessively clanky and I can keep my rig from feeding back. I don't know if a gate is the solution or what. It seems like half of my pedals play nicely and the other half want to squeal like it is their sole purpose. I really just have to do some full volume knob tweaking, but that is not possible in a 2nd floor apartment.

If you want to be heard anyway, but not annoy your guitarist, I'd turn down the treble and upper parts of your mids a bit, and boost the lower half of the mids (like stuff 800hz and under). Maybe slightly roll back the dirt, but keep most of it.

How many guitarists are in your band? Because if there's just one, you really need to be able to fill things out when your guitarist does a lead.

Oh man, does it really look weird? My pinky has almost zero control. I only use three fretting fingers.

It does. My pinky has more control than my ring finger. I actually use both of them together, like they're one finger. Basically upright bass left hand technique. I started doing this when I was learning upright, and I actually found that I make fewer mistakes this way, as well as the transition between electric and upright being easier.

What kind of amp and cabs do you guys to record?

The last two times we recorded I used my AD200 along with and Orange 15. I dig the sound but I'm kind of thinking of going for something a bit different this next time around.

For Catapult's first album, we used my D-180 head and my little Ampeg 1x15 cab, plus DI. For the second album, I'm going to try to push to record the bass at our rehearsal studio so that I can use my Sunn 2000S cab.

The guitars I believe were all recorded through an Orange thunderverb or whatever it's called. May have used one guitarist's Rocker 30 for some stuff.

Had a dude make a tolexed cab for my Sunn 2000s clone. Now she's ready to go out on the town! I had the "garnet" tolex lying around from an old project so I said "use it up".

Since I had another blank aluminum chassis the same size lying around, I had him make two. My default plan for next build is orange or80 clone but I'm open to suggestions... Place your vote!!

Party for a friend of friend returning from Ecuador for a visit last night. Drank to the point I slept basically all day, and don't want to see another beer for a bit. Someone brought a tray of 100 cookies and we we're talking about how weird cookies are for a beer fueled party, but by 4am they were almost gone... Mmm white chocolate macadamia and modelo.

Dude, cookies are amazing when drunk or high. People might try to pretend they're too cool to chow down on some cookies, but they're kidding themselves.

Nice looking cab. I've always wondered about offset speakers like 610s or 412s...does that aid in volume or sound dispersion or something science-y like that? Or is it just aesthetics?

Nothing science-y.

It does affect what the dimensions of the cab can be. Straight horizontal rows might mean that the cab would have to be wider, and shorter, versus the off-set which means the cab can be narrower, but has to be taller. The latter might be preferable for stage space considerations, and also gets the top speaker just slightly closer to one's ear level.

Sounded amazing, even though it was hooked up to a 410HLF (the cab that I hate more than any other I've ever played through), which is impressive. I kinda want a V4 now. Dammit.

Catapult played our second show with the new drummer last night at the Golden Bull in Oakland. Lament Cityscape played as well, but this time (unlike the last times we played with them), they had a real drummer, but no bassist. I liked them better before, I have to say. Still rad, though.

Anyway, going back to my earlier question about cheaply repainting a car... someone mentioned krylon. How does one go about doing that?

Also, would Fender/Mesa/Sunn style amp knobs fit the pot shafts on my Peavey bass? The dome knobs with no markings are kinda not that useful.

Krylon is what I paint guitars with, it works fine if you follow directions and watch videos and don't get impatient.

The good news is you are in a mild climate. Spray paint is best at 60-80 degrees. Not too humid a day or windy is better.

It's really about how much you care. My friend like I said merely started spraying directly over his car and interior like a tard so it's flaky, inconsistent and tacky (looking and in feel).

If you mildly sanded the original finish, tack cloth, did a good prime, took your time and didn't try to get everything covered in one pass and get drips and runs and orange peel. With light layers 12" away and quite a few cans and layers later you should have an ok finish, then add clear coat same way. Lightly Sanding and tack cloth between.

The fact you're not super worried helps. Just realize another part of the equation is how far you disassemble the car. If you just spray the door the handles etc are all gonna be hard to get. And the parts of the door/car that close will have no paint. Or you can take it apart and get each piece one at a time.

What about the Jazz Bass cover? Or still too tight a fit?

Hey Sartori you're band is awesome I did you're review on the sludgelord when I still had time to write there. You guys ever going to go on tour? I'd like to hear that album live it sounds pretty intense on album.

Well, it looks like my band is transitioning from a play out and have fun band into a stay in and do some self-recording while we wallow in our collective anxiety band. I get why, but I've got an itch to go out and play live even though I find it vaguely terrifying. Pushing myself past my anxieties and coming through with a huge adrenaline rush was part of the reason I was into this. So, while I still plan on playing with these guys, it's looking like I need a second band to get my live fix in.

I've done hundreds of live performances. Some for fun, some in competition and 9 years of regular performances. I dig playing live, but I also dig garage/studio play. I could go without live shows and be fine. I just like to make music with people.

Oh, we have. I enjoyed the hell out of them. But at the same time, the thing in this band has always been we only do stuff that everyone wants to do, and if the other two guys really don't want to play out anymore, that's the way it is. The other thing is that we tend to change direction a lot, and this feels like just another one of those things. I'm a bit wary that in 3 or 4 months we'll be back to getting ready for a show or something.
