Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Also recorded some scratch tracks for the drummer last night for the rock band im in. Took the "Swiss army knife" (red parts jazz) to cut them. I thought about parting it out and keeping the 2000 am jazz I bought cheap. After I A/B'd them, before I went to the studio, I found the red jazz sounded better/fuller (paf model J's). I think I'm going to use the am jazz for trade bait for something down the road.

Preteen Satanic graffiti? They must have gotten started early! I didn't start listening to the metal and worshiping Satan til at least 14 or so. Kids these days...

To be fair, it was probably just teens with a preteen literacy level.

Anyone tried the DOD 250 overdrive? I feel some Al Cisneros fanboy GAS coming...

It's fairly dark, kind of fuzzy when pushed. In my experience you can get some really great tones out of it, depending on a lot of things due to gain staging in the whole rig. How hot the pickups are, how hard you're pushing the amp, how hard the amp is pushing the speakers and all that. The best experience I ever got with mine was with a P bass with a really hot pickup, running into a lightly dirty amp, pushing a 4x10 really hard and that sounded great. Most of the time with the rigs I have currently I haven't liked it as much, because when it's just the pedal with a lot of gain (as opposed to lower gain and pushing everything very hard) it just sounded kind of dark and fuzzy. It can sound really cool and of course it's a matter of taste. I have a bunch of clips that include my older DOD 250 on my Soundcloud account, with different basses and comparing with different pedals.

No straplocks for me - never had an issue with straps falling off. The ATK has MASSIVE strap buttons and it took a good ten minutes to get the strap on there, it ain't coming off.

I dig the two-ways for occasional studying or shenanigans, but can't handle them all the time.

Coffee is definitely in my top 3 triumvirate of chemical enhancers. LOVE COFFEE.

That Ibanez roadstar corey helped me score has a set of big V shaped strap buttons, leather straps to thick to slip around them.

That's one of the better ideas for strap buttons I've seen. They're too big and oddly shaped for the straps to easily come off, but also not hard to get the strap on. The really big round strap buttons can be good, but sometimes just putting the strap on them stretches it out.

the g&ls have strap buttons that are squared off and not tapered, they work pretty well

just bought a vintage mij bullet bass long scale to put some norstrand mustang pickups in, needed a weirder more unique bass that basically sounds like a p, i've been growing more and more paranoid that somebody is going to steal one of my g&l basses recently, not sure if it's the lack of sleep or i'm just getting middle aged and afraid of everything, but the pit bull is too old to leave in the cab of the truck to prevent gear loss nowadays and it concerns my old self

Beer on weekends majority of the time in social settings never alone (I fall straight asleep). Chopping down Trees is on pause, but that's my only real vice. Cannot Stand energy drinks, one cup of black coffee makes me jittery if I want it to, no sense in flooding my system with excess sugar, caffeine etc.
Aside from a two methods of tobacco use, I find it makes me physically ill and tastes bad. So it's largely ignored too.

Psychedelic experiences are awesome, but only once in a while, By no means a daily/weekly/monthly thing.

I hate smoking, really I do. I have been trying to quit for the last year or two. Job/life stresses keep it going though. It will happen soon though. The last few times I have tried to quit, it has been more and more successful until the eventual failure. I only drink sugar free energy drinks. Anymore, regular soda and regular energy drinks are way to sweet for me. I do not like sweet drinks. My coffee is incredibly strong and black as night. Favorite coffee drink is 3-4 shots of espresso as is. Me gusta el trees. I have been refraining more often lately as I just have been more focused on sleep when I am at home and I prefer to go to work sober in my more responsible mid 20s. I could go for a psychedelic experience. Haven't had one since Bonnaroo 2012, but that was 4 days straight of gratuitous multi-substance abuse. I can't party like that anymore, or more correctly, I don't want to.

I am running on about 30 hours of sleep a week right now between both jobs. The stimulant of coffee/energy drinks is keeping me moving.

On top of that I just love coffee.

I love coffee to. And I think my one job puts us in a similar sleep bracket. Also we are generally both awake and on here at similar times it seems. At work we have been getting slammed with massive frozen bread orders one after the other. I have been working 12-14 hours a day 6 days a week for the last 2 months almost. On top of that, my life. There have been several occasions where I was awake for 2+ days straight with 24-27 hours of work in the mix and a meal or two. Absolutely unhealthy. But you know, money and ****.

For sure.

People asked me what I did over the weekend (expecting some sh!t about vaginaltines day). Friday I worked 6:30am to 12:30am. The last part of that (3pm on) was on the hot line. No breaks, solid cooking in 110* heat. Brought in a gallon jug of water to keep myself standing. Repeated that 1pm-1am on saturday. None of that is OT either, as it is split between two jobs.

Money and sh!t...

I'd always read tobacco addiction is the source of anxiety (or I guess any addiction). Like once your body gets used to a certain level of nicotine the stress you feel and leads you to smoke is your body saying get more nicotine in me, but we register it as "gee this has been a stressful day, maybe a cigarette would help".

Not knocking you or anything as I think you said you love doing what you do.

But if you don't, I swear you mentioned the degrees you have earned (they were impressive), couldn't you do something else that pays better for less time and if hourly, does so fairly (OT)?

I do love what I do, in doses that are healthy. Right now MI is a wasteland for jobs. I stay here because I have some family obligations (which are requiring me to work the second job). I would love to find that $100k a year job making two $40k ones obsolete, but they just are not out there right now.

I wish I was making 40k! No OT for me either. I am on the sour side of salary currently. Hopefully soon I will have more people, enough that I can work 40 and leave. At this point I would be totally ****ing my team if I left early with the workload we have. 8-9 hours without breaks before we are even done producing. Then we have to pack and I have to organize it and prepare for the next night.
