Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

On a Sunn O))) binge tonight. I remember the times when it felt like extreme music. Now it seems it's just a few guys playing on RATs and tube amps without drums and bass. I still enjoy it, but hell, why did I like it so much back in the days?

I like Sunn0))) but I always thought they were basically a rip of the band Earth, especially Earth's second album.

A few years back I saw where someone on YouTube posted a few Sunn0))) tracks sped up several times. They sounded like Spinal Tap!

Listened to some live soundboard mix from the public radio set...that rig sounded great! Had a mic on an 18 and a Countryman b/w the Vulcan & 3620. The F800 was backup.

I've been really happy with P + picking > Sheehan OD into Vulcan lately; tons of attack. I'll click on extra dirt (VT or BB) here or there as needed. Last night I used the Ruiner and it was mui tasty.

As for straplocks, Schallers.

Is the countryman DI yours? Been thinking a DI to go inbetween my amps and my cabs for VEGA would be useful since im not running my Dunwich DI/pre anyone more. Something with a level control so I can keep the sound guy happy and have my stage volume to my liking. My Dunwich DI/pre allowed me that and loved it.

The Countryman in the pic was the engineer's though I have one, too, and they're solid. Recommended.

The old guitarist me and the VEGA drummer used to play with, his new band Lord Montegue, is under Nasoni records I believe. I remember him saying they make like 300 vinyl and give you 50 to do with what you please and make money off of, and they sell the rest for themselves. They repress another 300 when they sell out of their 250 and you get another 50.

Thanks! My band Axis/Orbit is considering releasing our LP through them.

I tried to get into them a few times but as a bassist/drummer I just kept imagining myself playing drums and/or bass along with the music. It was weirdly distracting and I ended up listening to whole albums of theirs while not really hearing the music. Oh well, guess it's not for me.

Phil Jones is now making cabs for doom.
50x5".

Was a special order, now available for anyone, who wants to go deaf from a million tiny speakers...

All joking aside those cabs sound mighty phat. Even if there's some science missing.

Never knew of this phil jones.

400 watt capable 1x4" cabs?? The hell is this voodoo. And these things cost a ton and weigh a ton. 40 pounds that's a dense bastard.

And a nearly $500 10 watt solid state amp??
They are pricey but do clean very awesome, like great. From STL if you'd care about that.
You got to figure each of those drivers needs a frame and a voice coil. You can neodymium the poopie out of it and only save so much weight. Fewer larger drivers will always weight less.

Oh yea it's just surprising a 4" speaker would be that chubby. But a 1x4 cab is still crazy even if it's 40 pounds. Is it really 400 watts though? Like I could run an SVT into it and doom out?

In other news, This rock master is stupid loud, the guy had a 4ohm 2x12 and I had the pre and post at 2 and it was quite loud, my only 4 ohm cabs are my dually or both 4x10 arrays so basically it only can be loud as it stands. My dad got his free wood working saws and tools from a family friend last Sunday, so next time I visit I can build up my pignose 40 watt. Maybe I'll buy or craft a cab for these heads that's 4ohms like a 1x12 or vert 2x12.

Well that alphabass wasn't cutting it, think it needed new tubes and it weighed a ton, and no one wanted to drive to denton to get it. This guy always hits me up to trade stuff, but lives on the far side of dallas. Well I went by today as I was in that area, and he had tons of peavey gear, mostly guitar oriented, but still wow max would be jealous. Anyways I wanted a straight across trade no money spent (or I'd of walked out with a roadmaster or the classic 400). Well it was between a vtm 60 and this guy. In the end it's like almost half the size of the vtm it seemed like and is 120 watts so that's that!

Was it Will33 here?

No, will is out of austin, I've sold him several BW equipped cabs. well my dad did, each time we plan to meet something happens and I had to go back to school so I left stuff with my dad. he was one of the guys to convince me to go greenboy.

This dude is a retired restauranteur with a peavey fetish. He lives way on the other side of DFW, doesn't post ads, only has a land line and a canned email response he always sends out, and doesn't use a camera. If he actually updated his flipping method he'd bank, but he's "too old" to learn. Smoked like half a pack in the hour and a half I visited with him.

The size of the speaker tells you how big the speaker is, nothing more.

So how does it compare to a bassic as the specs seem similar?
