Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Hey guys I've been searching threads for an hour that led me to this page and I'm hoping you can lend a hand.

I'm looking for a pedal to get a Sludge Metal/Speed Rock like bass tone ala Kvelertak, Baroness, Red Fang. Get the idea?

I've tried a few pedals and can't seems find the sound I'm looking for. So far the Heavy Electronics El Oso is on the top of the list. What else can you guys suggest?

Anyone Checkout the Black Arts Toneworks Pharaoh?

Any help is always appreciated.

For now I'm running:

Fender Jazz - Basslines 1/4# (Bridge) & Vintage Hot (Neck)
Orange Bass Terror (500)
2 Ampeg SVT210AV Cabs (This might get upgraded to a 610 or 810)
Boss TU-3 & Boss CS-3 (These are going to get upgraded soon to pedals that don't color the sound. I was in a pinch at the time.)
I think if you ditch the comp and just push the amp you will be there. Maybe a cheap boost for parts you need some more umph.

I've got the Pharaoh, and can't praise it enough. It's got plenty of options! It works great on bass and guitar, as well. I can't imagine needing a fuzz tone it couldn't do. Typically I use it on either Germanium or Silicon, and with plenty of bass in the mix, but still able to cut. It's a great fuzz, and I think you'd be happy with it. My sound with it is a stoner/fuzz based sound that carries the lows, but also is heard in the mix. It's not the most present thing in the world, but it mixes in the right places and cuts in the right places (if that makes sense). I'm not saying there isn't a better fuzz for you out there, but I doubt I'd need another fuzz. And if I did, I'd get the Pharaoh Supreme.

I'm a big fan of the fuzzrocious demon. It does anything from drive to full on fuzz. Also the boss fz-2 hyper fuzz is pretty gnarly sounding. It loses a bit of low end though. Personally though. The demon is my favorite fuzz box

Thank you guys for all of your input. I think the Pharaoh/Pharaoh Supreme might be the option. Looks like i'm gonna have to watch eBay for a little bit since I don't think any one in Minneapolis sells Black Art Toneworks.

I know the purest in me would say to let the head do it, but I don't need it for every project/song so the need for a pedal is there. I'll play with the head a little more in the mean time base off of your suggestions.

Thanks again.

Usually I just back off the volume (on my Peavey) or switch to the neck pickup, which is lower output (on my Rickenbacker) if I want a cleaner sound.

You can buy straight from the builder as well! Or Amazon, or a number of other online pedal shops.
