Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

damn guys... i disappear for a week and you jump 50 pages!... GACK!!

anyway... yesterday our guitarist clued me in to this: Invalid Link Removed

We got added to the Maryland Doom Fest and it seems the Obelisk really likes us! Nice!

Saw that yesterday - congrats! That was a really nice little writeup from JJ.

We wear ties at the insistence of our owner, suits at trade shows. That might be changing though.

That really chaps my ass. They don't want you to" look nice "they want you to conform.
Doesn't matter how well kept your beard is. Doesn't matter that your Carhartt was probably closer to $200 than $50. It matters that it's practical instead of trendy.
Did management actually tell you your appearance is denying you a promotion?
You might want to talk to a lawyer.
I'd play the fat card in a heartbeat just to stick it to them.

None of that is from the management in this department, just a co worker telling me that is what matters to those A holes.

Damn, Julian. Full beard here, and I'm in exec-level meetings both internally and with vendors, all the way up to Big Deal Japanese executives. Granted it's the music/pro audio business, but still.

The funny thing is, I am the one that gets sent to the meetings with all the VPs to represent my team. The execs love me, I dont lie, or sugar coat things for them. They would rather have someone tell them what they need to hear, than what they want to hear. Last year they had a 50 million dollar initiative to expand in to a asian market on the table. They asked me my opinion on all of it. I told them to figure out what was required for registration and importation to the country before they made any agreements. Turns out that their +50 mill a year would have ended up being a big loss. Everyone else on my team was gungho to dive in to it. None of that matters to middle management here.

I've been in the river cities reader a hand full of times. It's kind of the local pulse (if you will) for local live music both signed and unsigned. It also has general topics about the local goings on in the area. It's a free publication that is printed bi-weekly and put into about evey music store, live venue, and local era small business. Usually if you wana know whats going on music wise that's what you look for to see what's going on.

Nah... just have to be willing to drive to Chicago, the land of every culture and all their food.

Seriously, I bet I think about 3am deliveries from four different places via grub hub on a weekly basis.

Why did I need a pizza, sushi, carnitas, and a donner delivered at 3am? Stoner? Nope. Just a fat kid who spent too much time pulling all nighters.

You would think that, but I swear they dont want me in there unless I speak spanish. Last time I pointed and grunted I ended up with chicken tacos. They were the really fuqing good ones, where the whole bastard is fried, but they were not what I went in their for.

Fat kid, so I ate them and was happy.

You would think that, but most of the mid west has forsaken their roots in slavic deliciousness.

This also makes me think of living in Chicago. There is this place on Archer, they have buffet of different pierogie.

A. Whole. Fuqing. Buffet.

27 different kinds of dumpling.....

I want to get two mc ribs, and two mc chickens. Put the mc chickens in side, bun and all, of the mc ribs.

Fat bastards unite.
Also. Are you calling me fat!?
Nah

Knight, Death, and the Devil (always liked this, because of the hour glass, the sickly horse, and the loyal dog)

It's not the overall tones.

It's just the lack of... intensity, for lack of a better word. I mean, it can be done very well. Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats are that style and I like their sound a lot. But some of the bands doing the retro 70s thing are... well... just kinda boring.

I guess part of it is how much of it there is. A band that's doing that retro, blues based stuff has to be really good for me to take notice, these days. Whereas a more unique-sounding band is a lot more likely to catch my attention immediately.

I also actually prefer amp overdrive to fuzzed out pedal sounds. I mean, I don't use a fuzz pedal for my regular overdrive sound, and neither do my guitarists.

Rebecca from SubRosa, one of my favorite bands, with one of my favorite guitar sounds, gets her overdrive from diming old Sunns.

It depends on overall sound. Sometimes the bands going for the retro thing just sound too "polite" or "standard" to me, despite their volume. Especially ones with AC/DC-esque overdrive. I mean, I don't even like most of what AC/DC has done for the past thirty years, why would I like a band that sounds like a watered down version of them?

My world of Fuzz pretty much goes as far as FUZZ FACE and TONE BENDER. Most of my favorite guitar tones are just guitars straight into a cranked amp (usually a Marshall), maybe with a Dallas Rangemaster thrown in. If I could play guitar worth a dam, my set up would probably be LP gold top with P-90s, Wah, Fuzzface, Octavia, Univibe, Marshall 45/100, extra tall 4x12s.

Not to say I don't like a lot of pedal dirt, but my preference is for letting the amp do the heavy lifting dirt wise.

Another part of the whole retro thing that I'm not super fond of is often the mixing. Usually it just doesn't feel quite right. That's part of preference for more modern Psych bands (Tame Impala, Pond, Temples), they really make a huge stereo field with their production, without being too dense (re: I hate compression and the volume wars).
My favorite album, production wise, of the the last...idk 30 years is Howlin' Rain's Russian Wilds. It's full, it's defined, it's not cluttered, and it's punchy.

PVYHenge is complete and I have a ladyfriend.
