Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

gotta get some shows booked, hard to motivate if we aren't faced with a deadline, hoping for the desert experimental noise fest this year
i'm lecturing at queens college in ny at the end of april, gonna try and spend the week looking at galleries and seeing shows
photo shoots in joshua tree and palm desert for the next solo show
will be in santa clara in may for the los gatos museum show, gonna shoot some pics of the buildings used in halloween 3 and the fog
the girl's voice in this song sounds like our singer, maybe a good cover choice, we'll just doom up the music

So I had a younger friend come over last week to play drums with no experience. It went ok, and he caught on well for one new day with me as the teacher lol. I want to make it a weekly thing, but this kids ADD and always making intricately conflicting plans.

My other friend (nearly a decade older than me) wanted to try so he came over today... Jesus

The first thing he says is I shouldn't try and correct him :rolleyes:. Well he starts and it's just timid pattering across everything sans time or pattern. He says he read a wikihow and that got him what he needed... He was holding the sticks in such a way I can't replicate not describe to you, needless to say "wrong". I tell him get up, and I play the basic 4/4 Beat I think anyone who plays learns first and wrote it down for him and he ignored it. So I started playing straight 4/4 open A string baritone and he haphazardly follows by stomping the hats and bass drum, refusing to use his arms for what was about 40 minutes... Then I play as complicated a riff as I can to lose him. When I finish I have him get up. I grab the sticks and frustration drum up something funky and in time and he finally cedes maybe he needs to learn... So I put free drum lessons on from episode one and we watched a few and I gave him a pair of sticks and a urging to try legitimately at home and buy a practice pad.

Just finished my first listen (it started over as I started to write this and I'm not stopping it) of Styrofoam Tombstone by milkducttape. The band of our own @Pelham Bleu

This album starts out heavy with the intro of "Black Stained Heart", but don't let that fool you into thinking that's all it is. In fact the ending track, my favorite song "Turkish Delight" begins and ends on a driving yet wavering riff that wraps things up perfectly.

The guts of the album show you the places the group can go while still maintaining a cohesive sound. The shared vocal duty between songs and within them really adds another dimension to the album, and pushes the songs up a notch in quality and catchiness. Speaking of , the quality of the production is great, I can clearly hear everything everyone is doing in the mix at all times. Those guys are clearly doing something right at MDT HQ.

Oh and if I had to describe the band in the baby style... Mudhoney and QOTSA had that baby. That said, Baby MDT walks to the beat of its own drum (or cowbell).

Only gripe is that 6 songs is not enough. Overall, just awesome stuff, have to burn it to my PC or PS3 so I can keep it in my car CD player.

I am 26 and I firmly believe that if this isn't somewhat of a universal feeling of growing older, that person didn't live life to the fullest.

Really appreciate the kind words! We kept the release at EP length because it takes us forever to record, mix and master ourselves. We have the second set of six tunes written and I suspect we'll start recording them in late spring...so maybe we'll something new next winter? :D

So I guess old dude ordered a bunch of .22 caliber reloading supplies.

My father in law orders his lead from a place that packs every square inch of those flat rate boxes. The weight density is amazing. I've picked up one and been worried for my finger tips setting it down.
Surprised this hasn't happened to him.

We're leaning towards maybe starting to just release EPs. Easier to afford and record in smaller chunks plus we don't have to take as much time off from playing shows at a time to write new material.

Sledz, oof that sucks man!

OK, I did a little WinISD testing. I have to admit I'm a bit confused about what I'm seeing. I thought the new cab/drivers would perform much more than what I currently am using. Clearly it's better, but not as drastic as I was thinking. Or maybe I'm interpreting this wrong? Anyone that's more knowledgable in this area than I care to give their opinion? Red is my current cab, green the cab I'm thinking of building.

I'd also like to add if someone is willing to design a dually-esque cab for me, and give me dimensions/plans, I'd be happy to pay them for their time/expertise! There's so many variables, I'm afraid I'm going to mess something up. Would hate to do so with such an expensive cab.

Current: Fender/Sunn 215 with Eminence Legend CB158's
Volume: 7.3 ft^3
Tuning: (guessing 45hz)
Vent: 3"x24" slot

New: Similar to BogeyBass's 215 with some differences. Faital 15PR400
Volume: 8ft^3
Tuning: 45hz
Vents: 8x 3.23

Once you take into account how meaningful/difficult 3db or 5hz is to get, you see the performance gain.
