Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Dude, work sucks. That is kinda the truth of life. A lot of our society is devoted to trying to sugar-coat the fact that work sucks and we're basically all prostitutes (I don't really see much difference between selling your body for sex and selling it for any other kind of labor that you wouldn't choose to do otherwise).

Never thought of it in quite that way, but you are dead right. I'm totally stealing that.

And in the last three decades, wages have really declined in comparison to inflation, cost of living, etc. It ****ing blows. It's not whining to talk about the suckage of it is getting to you.

It's not helped by this society's expectation that everyone's lives are basically about their jobs...

Yup. Everywhere, everything seems to be only going up in price, but most working stiffs sure ain't making any more money. And what you mention about the "American Work Ethic" rings true also. There was a time when there was a sort of unwritten social contract where you put in your years and time and energy for a company and they at least pretended like they gave two squats and would set you up with decent benefits and retirement. At least in a lot of fields. Doesn't happen much anymore.

What is really agonizing me is that I just left a job a couple months ago where I had put in some time. It was at times a tedious job, even a PITA some days, but I liked it. My boss and co-workers were chill. I never had to think about work once I left the office. I actually looked forward to going to work most of the time.

But I got an offer for a job that I thought would be a good move. A little more money (on paper, though that's not how it's worked out in practice) and I wouldn't have to do a 20 minute commute twice a day, etc. But it turns out there was NO monetary benefit to switching jobs, the health and other benefits are not as good, my boss is a micromanaging drag and I am constantly having to work at home, plan work-related things, meet and greet the public, and basically have work shite on my mind 24/7. I don't sleep well anymore and most days I dread coming to work.

If I could've gotten my old job back, I would have jumped on it. I was working for the state...DHS monkey-work, but it was real mellow compared to what I'm doing now. I am still putting in for DHS jobs everywhere I can to get back into it and kick my retirement fund back in and all that crap, but I gotta do it in such a way that doesn't require a major move to another part of the state which we can't afford to do right now.

Yeah... I don't have any kids, but I'm thinking about getting fixed. I know I wouldn't be a good parent, and will never be able to support kids, and I just... well, to put it bluntly, I just don't like babies. Just don't. Kids after that are all right, I guess. But babies? I don't know how anyone copes with that part of child-care.

It's good you are solid about what you want and don't want. I do enjoy having my kids now that I can relate to them on a more adult level, and there were plenty of times even when they were babies that I felt that it was really worth it. Special cute baby moments and all that jazz. But my kids are just over a year apart. They both inherited by particular genetic gift of insomnia, so for about 3 years my wife and I barely slept and felt like we were on a jagged go 24/7. For some reason, I ended up with the gray hairs though...

Yeah...definitely not a decision to go into lightly. Biggest thing you can ever do, and it really never ends. My stepson is 26 now but is still a fuggup a lot of the time. Love the kid, but I can't be responsible for him anymore or pick up his slack or bail him outta trouble or give him $$$ over and over. Just can't do it.

Yeah. Right now I'm looking for more steady work. Substitute teaching sucks.

But you mention why I don't substitute at the elementary school level. Only middle and high school, and I avoid middle school if I can. It's easier to relate to the kids that way. Though there are still really terrible days, and often. I want to get out of it, and into a lower stress job.

Parenting, to me, sounds like a high stress job that, for a while, means being on the clock at all times. That's not for me.

Tone self-doubt days are the wurst.
Yeah. Nothing sounds right, but you abstractly know that it should. But that doesn't make it better.

I feel you man, I used to teach English. Grown ups only, but I wanted to kill them all on bad days, and the bad days were really bad. I quit after 2 years. Not for me.

Or you spend time knob twiddling then decide you prefer where you started...and can't get back. :(

Chinabacker in new profile, yes. Even though it's not showcasing the green, it was too classy a pic to pass on.

(Editorial note: the pic is classy, not the subject.)

Nice. You know, I was jonesing for the Epi Ripper, but my GAS of late has all been about a Ric. Actually, though this might be sacrilege, I would rather have an old MIJ Ric copy with a bolt on neck. Had one like that years ago. It killed and I stupidly let it go.

That Epi Ripper sold quicklike & I made a little coin on the flip. In the end, I got sick of looking for a case. That, and the Chinabacker going up for sale.

Won a free drink on the shake of the day...

Gin and tonic St Patrick Swayze style...

dont work Tuesday's I hope.

And a big ol' jar of pickled eggs on the bar.

pickled eggs sound like a serious gastronomic mistake.

Is anyone else just flat sick of work? I'm 46 and I've been working hard since I was 14. Moved around too much and changed jobs too often to probably ever be able to retire.

I don't really mind giving up one third of my days to working, but I at least wish that in return I could make an actual living and not struggle every month.

Don't mean to whine, but I'm getting to the end of my rope here...

I've got a couple of degrees, have worked very hard, tried to advance myself and make good decisions with regards to employment but basically I just feel like I'm getting crapped on and my mental and physical health are deteriorating.

I feel as if when I get to the end of my life I'm gonna look back and think "Well, that was stupid..."

Just started working... You're scaring me. Though I dig what I do.

I can't stop working until my kids are through school.

Isn't Joe Buck a movie?

Please make a sealed 2x18.

Yeah I guess I am doing things right, she is trying to put in her will that she wants me to raise him if anything happens to her. I tease her damn skippy, that is better than taking a puppy to the park to get the ladiez. Yeah I am all alone raising this little feller here, I said we can have Mommy try outs! She doesn't like that comment.

You seen that Jim Jeffries special, where he talks about taking his daughter with a dead mom for ice cream?

@Sartori don't check out Jim Jeffries, you're head will explode :D

My girlfriend doesn't like to buy me gear because I flip stuff so often LOL. Good thing I love the Pitch Fork as it ain't going anywhere. She also won't let me sell my TB500 just because it is blue.

Put a tissue box in the headcase and sell it lol.

I'd love to be in an earthquake, two months ago we had a freak one and I was at the epicenter 15 minutes before it happened... I got home saw the news and cursed my luck. To feel the earth move on its own, too badass.

A bunch of white guys in a band named "Black Pussy?" That's just... well, while I'm totally willing to accept that they're well-meaning fellows and not ********... naming yourselves "Black Pussy" just seems like a really stupid thing, and it concerns me that at no point did any of them go "wait a minute... you know, we're a bunch of white dudes, maybe this name is kinda not the best for us?"

Like another dude said on the other thread, if it had been a sludge band made up of angry black chicks, then it'd be cool, ala Pussy Riot.

No, agreed, as soon as I heard about it I had a moment of realisation and felt pretty stupid, I was just saying what my train of thought was and why it didn't immediately click with me (which is probably a bit of an issue in and of itself). Someone probably should have had that moment of insight somewhere along the line.

Tone self-doubt days are the wurst.

Ugh, they're awful. Every now and then I'll think "Maybe I should try something other than a Sunn and JBLs, maybe try out a Hi-Tone or Reeves or Fender 100T". But then I usually go back to P-bass straight into the amp set to mild break up, and I remember why I love that combo so much.

AND IN OTHER NEWS

Really freaking bummed out to hear Andy Fraser passed away yesterday. He was a big influence on my playing, and I always really loved how funky his bass lines were. In less than a year, we've lost Jack Bruce, Glenn Cornick, and Andy Fraser, some of my favorite bass players.ugh.
