Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Must be the day before payday cuz i just bought a 40 of PBR with a handful of quarters. Had an English exam tonight, lots of writing, literary analysis of Song of Solomon by Toni Morrison. Good book, i enjoy picking apart books so it wasnt too bad.

Back home with my beer listing to Hall of the Mountain Grill on vinyl. The older i get the more I LOVE Hawkwind.

As for playing style, I'm a pretty meat and potatoes bass player. I usually start out following along, then the bass part opens up a bit as i try stuff out. I will throw little Geezer style fills in the open spaces but i don't really get flashy or over play beyond that. I'm also a fan of huge sustained notes while the guitar is chugging along - or vice versa.

I overplayed at one show because my buddy Jim was there and he's an incredible bass player so i tried to show off a little, calmed down after the first song.

Also Lemmy's playing on this Hawkwind album is shaging great.

I've been guilty of over playing allot. I had to mature enough to get past it, but it still happens. Like when I'm just riffing along to a drum machine (which is what this married fool calls a"wild night ") I have these bursts of "too much." Where I'm holding something in my head and trying to put something to it.
Nearly every time I've got it "worked out" there's like half as many notes as I thought there should be at the start. But that's not including ghost notes and grace notes.
I do think I can blame those on the simplistic beats my old Zoom. I can groove off them but I'm always wanting fills and accents where the machine just repeats kick and snare ad nauseum.

I'm wondering if I shouldn't add something new to my practice routine.

Like a Ditto or maybe a beat buddy?

Part of me really wants to go all out on a looper and a mic and a blender. That way I could lay down a rhythm on my doumbek, and riff over top of that.(that'd make my poser-dream complete)

The guitarist from my last band had a rig like that. He could do some pretty slick stuff all my himself.
Just remembering that makes me wish I could devote a couple of weeks solid to taking drum lessons with him. The guy really was boss at North African/Middle Eastern percussion.

Listened to two of their albums. Never had listened to them heavily before, but I've seen the rig run down and stuff. That's ny favorite track thus far.

I'll show that to my drummer friend, and get some input from her too see what comes with it. I figure if I try and foster forward momentum I can keep it from collapsing before it really begins.

In my experience there is a lot of truth in the Portlandia skits. Also in my experience it is overcast and rainy pretty solidly from about October to March. The other half the year it is incredible. Near perfect, with air like champagne.

My friend is kind of like a few of those skits (mildly thankfully). Funny enough she's at the sleater-Kinney show tonight. I missed out.

It's not exactly blue skies day in day out here those same months. Though, continued grey days with snow or rain is so much worse than grey days that are just kinda cold. I think if money was good or job paid for it I'd move to California. Though Louisiana, Arizona and Georgia are all interesting options. Absolutely no snow or Midwest/breadbasket unless I was offered the opportunity of a life time monetarily speaking.

I'm an only child born and raised in the same house until I moved in with a girl/went to school. I often wonder if my love of Texas is true or just something deep down in me that doesn't like the idea of leaving home. Time will tell I guess.

Well, I'd likely live in California if I could afford it, but with a few of the big western states I worry a little about the water supply. I was up for a good job in Winters, CA a few years back. Would have been nice.

I lived in Lafayette and Baton Rouge, LA for a time and dug Louisiana overall. Swampy damn heat in the summers though. Gotta say, I don't think I have ever seen a higher concentration of hot wimmens anywhere outside of Lafayette.

Traveled through Georgia some. Awfully pretty in parts. Always interested in Athens.

You know my love for AZ.

Texas I will always love, but there are only certain areas I'd probably live there, which is okay...still plenty of space and options.

6 days in the hospital! Ugh, getting out today though and can't wait to get home. Prolly won't be working again for a month or more. Shattered my tibia above the ankle and blew the ball end of my femur through my pelvis. On the bright side, I've got a new Stingray Classic 5 on the way. Yeah, I dig Kentucky and Tennesse both. Tons of natural beauty. Still would probably not live there though.

Yeah, I've never been able to sit still long...never more than three years in any one place. But I'm 46 now and pretty fargin' tired of moving.

Hopefully you and I will both find a place that suits us and feeds our souls. If you ever cross my way (wherever I happen to be) on some future travels, we always have a place for you. And that goes for everyone here.

Except maybe Kwai-Chang. Not so sure about that guy...

I'm only creepy when I'm awake. And, since I live on caffeine and meth, is pretty much around the clock.
I like to watch people when they're sleeping.
