Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Lots of spillover from Psycho California fest here in Phoenix AZ this weekend. Saw Sinister Haze with locals Goya last night down the block, good times. Nice T40->Blueline SVT action from Sinister Haze.

Tonight I headed into central Phoenix with mah Hex Volt rig and opened up this big show with Destroyer of Light / The Well (two bands from Austin TX headed to Psycho CA), Noise-A-Tron (Seattle), Chiefs (tour kickoff), and TwinGiant. WHAT A NIGHT, my playing was sloppy but the rig sounded awesome. We went on early, playing for basically just the other bands, but hey there's a lot of 'em so it was actually a decent little crowd for us; the crowd swelled nicely later especially for The Well and Chiefs. Nice Ric-w/-custom-Rio-Grande-humbucker-in-bride-spot -> Blueline SVT action from The Well.

And Saturday, we'd been ready to have Conan, Samothrace, Mantar, and some locals doom it up at the no-booze all-ages DIY spot down the road. And also the same night in downtown Phoenix, Eyehategod was scheduled play at Alice Cooperstown, a show put together by lame pay-to-pay shyster. Well the Eyehategod @ Cooperstown show collapsed for some reason. And now Eyehategod is added to the Conan show. At the local coffee-servin tiny DIY all-ages joint. WOAH.

A lot of driver design is really old tech. When they were advancing 15's it wasnt possible to go really low. So you ended up with old JBL's, BW's, and EV's, which have predominated the market. 10's came along and they could do more with them as you had to order larger lots to make one cab. Means they evolved quicker I think. You could cram a lot more speaker in a smaller box with quad loading. The tonalities shifted lower with demand.

15's have caught up in all ways, and have surpassed 10's (in terms of full range speakers). More space means you can have bigger voice coils, and larger magnets.

He has been working on sealed and ported 118's and 218's using a Faital woofer. Just been rocking it as a personal/experimental cab. I wish I was closer to Nashville so I could check it out.

Page 1349. Black metal time?

Anyway, anyone ever play an HM-2? Looking at picking one up. Buddy has a Behringer clone on guitar, love that sound, but never tried on bass. Just interested, really. It'll likely be on my guitar board. I ask because I know there are power issues with them using older power supplies or something, but I thought I read that if they're daisy-chained it works fine. Is that right? He and I were thinking of just playing old school Swedish death metal songs for fun, and needed cheapo distortions to fit the bill. He LOVES Dismember, so he got the Behringer HM300 a long while ago, and I just picked up guitar and my "death metal" sound is my Joyo UD with maxed tone and gain. Not bad, but no buzzsaw! What do you guys think? Real HM-2, or Behringer? (Might eventually pick up a modern clone, too!)

It skips the tone knob. There's no position on the muff's tone control that's not a mid scoop, so the apparent effect is a lot more midrange and some more volume.

It's a Mesa Tube overdrive pedal. It sounds good but is a pain in the ass. Weird power supply and pots are wonky. I prefer not to gig with it. I need to find/build a replacement.

One more HM-2 thought: Abominable makes a killer clone that has add'l mids control and a second FS that boosts the gnarliness. It was called YM-2 Yeti Metal but then rebranded to Throne Torcher.

So, a scene friend just got one. He plays guitar in a couple different projects, and bass in my guitar player's crusty black doom band. He let my guitar player use it for our last practice and it sounds like a monster. He was using on guitar, but it sounded great.

Side note, guitar player's hovercraft is going back. After the initial issue with the caps, and then a mix up in customer service, he is officially done. So, he's getting a weber kit to build. Extra money is going towards vinyl. This is going to come out sooner than we planned. Just waiting for all the funds to transfer around. Then we'll meet with our producer to make sure everything is exactly where we want it. Like a final listening party at the studio, but just the band. Then that final will go to the plant along with art my guitar player did, for the final release. So damn excited right now!
