Max, if you're thinking of getting a legit Ric I agree with Niff. Get a used one, I've seen vintage one sell for less than a new model and the new ones can be hard to get if it's not in stock at a real store sometimes. I bought my old 4003 in 2005 for $1100 shipped and sold it in 2012 (I think?) for like $1500 plus shipping, because new they had doubled in price.

My overdrive quest is also over. For now. First, Joyo UD kicked Darkglass B3k off my board. Tonight, DOD 250 kicked UD off. It sounded awesome through two 410s. Amazingly the new practice space's Warwick ProFet 3.2 sounded pretty decent. I guess I'll pass on my plan of schlepping Terror Bass to every practice

I had Bear amps make me a box that does this, and it does series or parallel...contact him or have a builder out by you build one it should be too difficult or expensive.
And yeah im more than likely going to get a used ric, specifically a blue one like Niffs...4003 vs 4001 doesnt matter, but if you guys see one for a good deal let me know.
Totally agree about buying used if poss. But I came on just to say that of all production basses made, whether new or used I would never buy a Ric unplayed/sight unseen. In my experience there are just too many variations from bass to bass, even more or less identical 4001s and 4003s that rolled off the line the same year. This is especially true with regards to necks. I love Rics but I personally would just never shell out for one I couldn't get my hands on first.

not saying we are necessarily changing our style up, but we have a 20 minute spot on a fest coming next week and our songs aren't that long. we either do 2 and run short or 3 and go over. So, we're doing 2, and I'm thinking of adding a noise song. Just straight anarchy. We'll see how it shapes up at practice tomorrowWell, it turned out that we played without the new singer tonight, work held him home.
Our new drummer is pretty raw, but he's got the right attitude - he practices a lot, has GAS and, what is most important, is our good buddy and my former flatmate. Also, was our first choice for drummer but had issues back when we were starting.
Our previous drummer, apart from being a flake, was a total cheapskate. The running joke was that if he was a guitarist, he'd complain that practice space doesn't provide instrument cables,
We made a new song - it's in larval form right now, but we named it Guantanamo - because you can torture people with it
I think we're going to make a turn to more monotonous, psychedelic playing. I didn't think changing one musician can change this much. But it's all for good y'all!

Doomers: I know many of you are familiar with pushing speakers hard. So, upon first virgin test tonight, my brand new 2x15 with Faital 15PR400's was sounding flipping beautiful, but then started to have a hint of a smell which freaked me out a bit admittedly. Definitely not a full-out burned pungent stank, but definitely a bit of that warm voice coil smell. Now, these puppies are 800watts each, and I was running a peavey 120/120 bridged, so 240W RMSish into both. I wasn't clipping hard or anything, some parallel fuzz, but no full-out squarewaves from the power section or anything.
Is this normal for Faital's? I mean, admittedly I had the 120/120 nearly cranked, but I shouldn't even be able to make these sweat! I don't recall any of my previous eminences ever having a break-in stank. Like the Legend CB158's in my other 215, which I play full out often with the same amp, and are lower wattage, Maybe the Faital's do? Any experience or thoughts? I'm just worried I guess. Sound Quality never was unusual. Even after the smell, I played for a bit more thinking (shag it, if I'm hurting these with only this wattage, I need to know now). Got nothing but glorious sounds from it though.

I've tried all those pedals as well. B3K wins on bass for me, but the DOD 250 was a close second. Likely gonna build the Grey Spec DOD 250 clone this summer, since it supposedly has better bass response. The only thing I didn't like was that it cut bass just a bit, but I loved the tone! The UD is solid, but I had pedals that did it better. I use it now as cranked death metal tone on my guitar board.My overdrive quest is also over. For now. Speaking of which, got time tonight in practice to run the Dano Fab Tone a good deal. Really digging it! I A/B'd it against my buddy's Behringer HM300 (both it and the Fab Tone are HM-2 clones) and they were relatively different. The Fab Tone wins. They seemed very different at first, but in the end, the Dano worked better on bass and was more responsive. The Behringer was good, but the knobs didn't have the range, and it didn't sound good at all on my bass. (These will be primarily on guitar, however.) Anyway, if you're looking for a cheap HM-2 clone, Fab Tone! Only thing I wish it had was true bypass, but I don't notice any negative effects on my tone or anything. More just a preference. This makes me want to get a Daddy-0 pedal now, since it's a Guv'nor clone.
Was any silicone caulk used in the build?
If yes, pull the speakers now and check their surrounds for glue degredation.
Otherwise I wouldn't be worried unless it persists.
