Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

All the voltages across all the preamp tubes in my blue voodoo are like 10-20v higher than they are are supposed to be (probably said that really incorrectly) pin 1 and 6 were the check points. All tubes checked good, transformers aren't shot... Not sure yet what this means, still very distorted and quiet.

The matching 4x12 is totally fine though, I want to someday probably finish it like my dually.

Totally talking out my ass here, but it sounds like it could be a bias issue. Has it been biased recently?

Basically, friday after work, I was listening to the new Chelsea Wolfe album, and had taken off my dirty work clothes in preparation for taking a shower. Sure, I was listening to it a little too loud. I heard a furious banging on my door.

I answered, after getting dressed, as by then I could hear my upstairs neighbor yelling "OPEN THE ****ING DOOR!"

He was wanting to have a long conversation about my music being too loud, instead of just saying "dude, turn it down, it's been a long day and I'm trying to have dinner." When it became clear to him that I thought this should be a short conversation, not a long one, he accused me of being arrogant, having a "big vagina," and needing to "man up." Naturally, that pissed me the **** off, and it showed.

I did eventually agree to go outside and talk to him. He stopped yelling, but continued being insulting. Eventually he divulged that him and his wife are trying for a kid, and that I "freak" him "out" a bit, because I listen to "depressing, demonic music" that "disturbs him." Keep in mind, my neighbor is practically covered in tattoos, and listens to punk rock. So hearing this was a bit unexpected. He then went on to say that I also creep him out because I'm "always hiding down there" (I'm not hiding, I ****ing live there, my apartment is a basement), and because I'm a "weird loner." He apparently needed to know it was going to be "safe" for his family. So basically, asking if I'm some sort of child molester/psychopath.

Kinda ruined my friday.
Should of cold cocked him. Hypocrites rank high in the order of people I despise.

On a positive note I lucked into a GC while on a little vaca visiting the wife's family in Minneapolis. Got to play this super clean 1969 p bass thru a new v4b. Sounded really good but very similar to my lollar p bass pickup.

Also, i used to work for a tatted up punk rock dude who turned out to be the biggest ******* I've ever had the displeasure of meeting. He was mostly cool with me because i know all the old punk bands that he liked. 100% batpoopie tea party conservative.

My best warehouse worker put in two weeks notice because his dad was dying from cancer and someone needed to take over the family business. He told me first as i was his direct supervisor. I said that i was sorry to see him go, but i admired him for doing right by his family.

He told mr punk rock boss next. Bossman yelled at him for ten minutes, (really poopy, personal, expletive-laden stuff), fired him on the spot, banned him from the store "for life" and vowed to contest any unemployment claim (which was extra stupid because guy had another job already).

That night i started sending out resumes, vowing to never become a bitter old shitbag that manages a pet store in the back half of my 40s.

shag you, Todd.

If dippoopie is really worried about his family he needs to rent or buy a house. If that's not an option than he needs to man up and quit picking fights with the neighbors.

I always tried to be over cautious about my music playing in apartments, small speakers on isolating foam, 20W amplifier, etc. Sucked but I didn't want to be that guy.

Does your neighbor own the place? If not I'd seriously consider contacting the landlord about the anger and abusive language. You can say that yeah, the music may have been too loud, but that doesn't warrant tge aggravated response from mr upstairs douchenozzle.
He is renting one. It's a cut up house with another, smaller house in back where another neighbor (my good neighbor that I like) lives. My apartment is the old basement.

This was at about 6:00 PM.

My amp and speakers are big, but they're old. 70s hand me downs. Maybe if I got them off the floor, it'd go through the walls less?

In response to your following post, that situation presents a really wide range of options for further freaking that couple out so THEY move and you stay put.

Maybe...crank up the demon music, but early in the day. If it comes up: "I thought it was disturbing you at night! Can't listen at night, can't listen in the day...how, then, am I to perform my rituals?!?!?"

You could leave burning red or black candles in front of their door. For added effect, include some chicken parts.

Maybe a bloody pentagram on their windshield.

Buy a goat and let them see you pointing knives at it and chanting.

You are seeing problems with your uptight neighbors, but I don't think you are seeing the possibilities.
The thing that keeps me from just insulting him back and then taking it up a notch is that, because my apartment is the only way to access the building's water heater and furnace, he has a key to it. That's the really crappy part.

I am going to start saying dip-poopie all the time now.

Seriously, @Sartori, sorry for making stupid jokes. That's a crappy situation and I would have been hard-pressed not to clock the guy. I'm pretty much a pacifist, but you are right--he had no call to be pounding on your door and shouting obscenities. Dunno why people can't act like adults and be civil.

You think he was trying to impress his chick or something?

I hope it works out. You can always hang at my place for a stretch, but I can't recommend Oklahoma much. It's like a sucking black hole too. Very hard to permanently escape its orbit.
Possibly trying to appear powerful in front of his wife.

Honestly, few things annoy me more than machismo. I find it pathetic and juvenile. All this manly man crap. Adults should have learned how to get the shag over music they don't like a long time ago.

And yeah, if this doesn't work out, or I get evicted or some poopie, I'll just report the place for being illegal and move back in with my mom.

I can't fathom how much a semi decent house would cost in SF. My guess is punky Brewster probably doesn't have the capital for that.

And yea in my apartment I was very cautious and never used a sub woofer or did anything obtrusive. Last thing I need is a knock on the door from anyone I don't know.
I live in the east bay, but still. I know he doesn't make house buying money. I don't have a subwoofer. Had to turn down the lows for the sake of the speakers when I was listening to Bongripper.

His wife wants a baby and he can't get it up. At least that's how I read the whole you-"freak"-him-"out"-a-bit bit. Apologize for rendering him impotent during this most sensitive time, and offer to do the necessary cervix-servicing in his stead as a way of making it up to him and the lady.
I won't lie. I have fantasized about him not being able to knock her up, and her being unscrupulous enough to simply come downstairs while he's away to seek my assistance in the matter, without him ever knowing.

Normally I'm against helping people cheat (though I'm cool with open relationships... the issue is the dishonesty and breaking of trust, not the sex itself), but shag that guy, he's a douchebag.

Hot damn, not much better than fresh caught bluegill coated in egg and shore lunch and deep fried.

Nice little payoff from the camping trip.

Is shore lunch an old bay like seasfood seasoning mix thing?

Yeah, but you're packin', right? Are ya packin'?

This is Texas ain't it?

Totally talking out my ass here, but it sounds like it could be a bias issue. Has it been biased recently?

I might be talking out my ass, but I keep saying the same thing to my dad lol. I just put new tubes in last visit, didn't work as described and I left now revisiting.

Should of cold cocked him. Hypocrites rank high in the order of people I despise.

Then he might get arrested though.

Is it ported? If so no foam. Most old school fender cabinets don't have foam. It not really needed I think.

Isn't your ported bassic lined?

@Sartori

The foam is supposed to prevent sound waves bouncing around in the cab off the hard surfaces. This would cause comb filtering/phase canceling thus certain frequencies in the mid range or lows might get compromised and eliminated before they make it out of the cab.

If your not sure, best to just get a few pieces of Velcro tape and just attach one piece of foam to the back wall. 90% of the issues caused by no foam will be eliminated. If you like it or don't notice a difference then take it out or just spray adhesive it in.

I used mattress topper from wal mart. Your foam may be ok but if it's super dense closed cell foam it might not be correct.

You only need to do the surfaces other than the baffle. Leave baffle alone.

Sans tone knob, but that donner yellow fall I got for $25 is good.

j

The tone selection thing is usually on digital delays if present at all. It's to simulate tape/analog echo warm repeats.

So if you notice you use it a lot you're probably better off getting an analog delay than trying to find a digital delay copping that tone. Though not all analog delays get very long delays so 600ms+ does narrow options some possibly.

Really? Didn't realize that. My Echo-Puss is analog and has a tone control. I guess it's the odd man out, then.

Yeah, the digidelay has a tape emulation setting that has the darker sounding repeats. Also has 3 different delay length ranges, modulated delay, reverse delay and a looper. The looper isn't great but the rest of the pedal is pretty damn good. Also has trails.

Forgot about the Digidelay. Had one ages ago, and liked it pretty well. Might have to look into that one. I do think that Digitech is criminally underrated on the whole. Thanks for the reminder!

Wait, so he has a key to your apartment, and can walk through it anytime to get to certain places?

That is super strange.

Anyway, in all seriousness, it sounds like he is going through a tough time conceiving, and is probably just reacting badly to a minor offence. I mean, he's still a total poopie, but that might not be as full on all the time. I would just be the bigger man, go over and make peace with him, and leave it at that. Don't have to get on with him, but I think it'd be good for your peace of mind. Better than worrying he's gonna come in a piss in your wardrobe all the time, anyway.

Like I said, it's an illegal apartment. The only access to the water heater and furnace is through my spot.

I've lived in an illegal apartment at one point. Left because splitting a utility bill was one sided to the bitch family in one of the units. The only recourse you have right now Satori is get the LL to change the locks and shut this pie hole down. If your not breaking sound ordinance then d bag has nothing to bitch about.
