Yeah I way overestimated my wattage needs. The first time I hooked it up and couldn't get the volume up above 4 clicks I realized that I had gone too far. But it should be fun
Thinking about buying a modern NYC Muff to use for a mod platform. Anybody have one taking up space that they don't want?
When I decided I'd go with a prolite 3.0 I thought I would be in overkill territory. Which is what I wanted, I'd rather have and not need than need and not have. But I have to be honest, in the two rehearsals I had with it before it crapped out I was not that impressed with the volume I was getting. Part of it is the inefficient ampeg 610 or 810 I was playing through, but the other part is class D. When played to the point of power amp clipping, my old 4 pro got every bit as loud at ~475w as the prolite at ~875w. That was pretty discouraging.
I know a watt is a watt is a watt. I also know that wattage doesn't necessarily indicate volume. But I would think that adding 350-400w would still deliver substantially more volume. Now we all know that a 100w tube amp will out-loud a 100w SS amp through the same cab, but my experience is telling me that 500w of heavy lead sled SS will out perform 500w of class D power 8 days a week. Like if I want a lead sled that can compete with an SVT I need like 600-800w. But if I want a class D that can compete with an SVTs 300w I need like 1200-1500 watts. I don't get it.
Am I just reaching the limitations of the cabs I have access to? I don't want to blow speakers, but I find it shocking that I can't find a power supply that isn't pushed to its limits at the volumes I need. Which, while very loud, are not as loud as many bands that we have all seen.
If someone has any clue ins for me in laymans terms that would be killer. My two 100-120w tube amps are enough(louder than my power amp running 875w a side), but I'd rather not risk their welfare as I intend to keep them for a long time.
Why not just buy a PCB and build to your desire. I know that many of the muff clone PCBs can be built to replicate most if not all muff variants.
That's plan b, but by the time i buy the pcb, all the components and the enclosure it's cheaper to just get a used nyc muff. Size isn't really a concern, probably wouldn't use it for the band, just want something to experiment on.

Well the fact that it crapped out that quickly makes me wonder if it was ever putting out its full wattage. The carvin has no problem getting to the same volume as my verellen only using one side. But that's still like 1100 watts at 4 ohm.
Edit, also I wonder if your preamp is putting out more sub low end with the proline than what your amp was. That would burn up a lot of headroom.

I've used 800W class d power amps, the lead sled LH1000 and now an svt. I felt like something was lacking from the class d amp- plus it would go into thermal shut down if you so much as looked at it funny. Admittedly it was a cheap one.
LH is louder than the SVT, but the SVT fills the room with bass in a different way. It's almost oppressive. In a really good way.
That's the exact same feeling I got when I switched from the Genzbenz shuttle 9.2 to the meatsmoke. Its alot less drastic with the mostly harmless. I think it actually puts out quite a bit more low end through the dcm3800l than the meatsmoke can.
Indeed good points. I actually have the ultra low rotary set to off though, so I'm not sure how much sub low freqs are being transmitted.
I had a friend back out of the Monster Mash Tool/Primus show. I'm going to post my ticket on stub hub (crazy prices right now), but if any of my S/D brethren want my ticket give me a PM. I'd be happy to sell you my extra for less than the $250 that they are going for on stub hub.
I know your pain man I couldnt get any of my friends to go even though I was offering the ticket for free. I'm still going though, I'll go party by myself!
I'm still kicking myself for skipping Turbonegro ten years ago because i couldn't convince anyone to go with. Somehow "gay Norwegian punk rock band" didn't sound appealing. One guy got into the band later and apologized. Doubt they'll hit the US again, also no Hank in the band.

Oh there is nothing holding me back from going. Three of the four tickets I bought are still going to be used, my buddies GF took 3 months to figure out she couldn't take off work. I just would rather not/can't really afford it but will if I have to eat the ticket. **** @Jolagh if someone offered me that ticket for free, bricks would be poopied. You sir are a good friend for that offer.
Be wary, I cracked open my NYC Pi when I was doing a germanium diode mod and found that it was entirely microcomponents...kind of like how a cell phone is built. See if you can find an older one or make the PC board like pills was saying
Might look up used muff on reverb and see if anyone's made a copy you can use to mod. Then the parts are purchased and pre assembled in a decent box.
Don't know, my class D GK MB200 can hang no problem in my metal band. It's been great so far. That being said, I have and HPF on the board to maximize power available, and I'm running fairly efficient cabs. But it could likely function as my only head if I needed it to. It could. But it won't.
Well it was mid year in the sense he's been in school for 5 weeks and they moved him. He's a really outgoing friendly kid, and doesn't have the ego, so I'm not toooo worried about that.
My wife just let me know he came home and all the kids were great to him and he had alot of fun, so the first day is a win!
That's unfortunate, gut shots online must have been older models. Oh well, I'll figure something out.
