Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Well guys... I have my butt cheeks clenched. Yesterday I accepted that any gas or similarly related impulse purchases are over for a while for me. I had to get my crest and V4B into the shop and I am just terrified of the potential bill. I thought about it and realized I have way to many amps to have 50% out of commission. I need functioning gear more than dust collectors.

The V4B just sprang on me the other day. I hadn't played it since the last show. It wasn't jostled or dropped or handled roughly in any way. When I finally hooked it up at la casa, it turned on, tubes warmed up but no sound off standby. I'm assuming that it is an easy fix. Here is the kicker, it's not my amp. I have it on semi-permanent loan from a good buddy that knows I'd like to buy it(but he is asking a bit to much for its condition). I feel obligated to get it fixed as it was under my watch that it went south, even though I probably didn't actually do anything to it. It is 40 years old and probably had a capacitor or resistor that needed replacement. Maybe it's a tube, I'm not sure yet. I'm just wondering how he will feel about it when I tell him I had to get it repaired and it cost me $xxx. Do you guys think I should have told him before putting it in the shop?


My wallet is going to hurt there is no doubt about that, but I need these amps working.

J/k, good on you to get it repaired. I did the same with a borrowed Ampeg B25B once upon a time.

No man, not at all. It ain't a contest. What I was trying to say is that I believe migraines are much more difficult to deal with because whereas I just kind of get through my day with pain I expect (and I am getting by okay) a migraine is like...you're walking along feeling fine, minding your own business, then suddenly someone jumps out from behind a corner and stabs you between the eyes. It's just totally debilitating and while I know there are precursors and sometimes you can feel them coming on...hell, that might even make it worse.

I liken it to seizure disorders. I've worked with lots of people who suffered from seizures. Different thing, of course, and different with regards to pain, but both are (or can be) sudden and scary as hell.

I am shopping for a strat like axe myself. Was doing some recording the other night and my tele doesn't have that jangle i was looking for like a strat. Hoping to find a sub $100 winner.

Yeah I just meant I know people have physically worse issues. If the pain wasn't in my head I think I could tolerate it, but it effects your thinking, your vision, your equilibrium, and your mood.
Seizure must be just awful. My Mom's dog gets them, I found her the most perfect dog ever and the poor bugger gets seizures.

Doc skipped the botox today after reading my migraine diary, he is afraid I am getting rebound headaches from the imitrex and putting me on three weeks of prednisone. If that don't work he will go all crazy with the botox. I guess I can pretend I am the Hulk for a few weeks. It was a trip, the doctor stamped his foot and looked all pissed and said I will fix these Goddam migraines. I give him props for not giving up on me.

The kava farmer guru in Hawaii (Chris at Gourmet Hawaiian Kava) it trying to make a blend of kava that has the most medicinal effects for pain. He has a few he grows but I think he is going to splice them to make a new plant. And time they mature he is going to blend the separates roots. Kava mad scientist. If I ever make enough money to visit Hawaii, I so want to visit his farm and have fresh kava. Dude also knows where centuries old untouched strains of kava are still growing in Hawaii. Protected like the cultural treasure they are.

Used to be able to pick up these all the time for a $100 on Musicgoround. I guess that Damn Kult is effen up the prices :)

Ceramic instead of alnico magnets but still sounds like a strat. You might be able to catch one on Craigslist, GC Used, or Musicgoround.

I'm running an envelope filter, but phaser works great too. I'd like to have a bass synth to try out.

Is it only me or we get a lot of lukewarm albums this year? New Ufomammut is so underwhelming that if it was recorded by some unknown band, it would never be noticed. New Windhand is just plain boring, just more of the same repetitive Electric Wizard worship. OK, Elder's Lore is amazing, new Uncle Acid is pretty good. But it just seems (at least to me) that our genre is eating its own tail a bit.

Hi everyone,

Been a little over a year since I've been on TB, and this thread is pretty much where I'd hang out. Good to see it's still going! I wound up in a pretty terrible financial situation and just barely started getting back to playing music again.

I still don't have much in the way of amps/wattage/doom, and I don't know if I'll be in a band anytime soon, but it's nice just bringing the doomy riffs at bedroom(ish) volumes for now.

Here's my newly self made pedalboard with my Spector, my guitar, and my new bass whammy reissue.
