I've been splitting my signal and adding my smoothie in for a little sparkle and low end bolster to my clean tone.
I'm a signal splitter. I'm going to hate it if I ever join a band and they won't let me use all my stuff...
Btw @kleinenenten when we get together you can play with my smoothie for sure. It's a rad compressor.
What are some good examples of reverb usage on bass? I've never once thought of using a reverb pedal. I don't know why, but I just can't think of any of my "dream tones" that have reverb. Maybe it's too subtle and I don't know, or maybe I'm just ignorant of who uses it. I know that chorus pops up a lot too, but I've never found a use for chorus on bass. It's pretty on guitar though, but still subtle for me.
Can't a compressor also bring out dynamics? At least in the sense that it can make all frequencies the same volume, thereby bringing up some frequencies that aren't as present in the mix? Or am I totally wrong.
This seems like my biggest problem right now. I feel like I have all the effects I know. The ones I don't have, I don't even really know HOW they work, so it's tough trying to figure out which one I want and how to use it appropriately.

yeah, just haven't had much time to play with it. Not a pedal that will go in the board as I don't have enough creativity or sonic space to do much with it. should be a fun studio pedal though.
Compressors can bring out dynamics to a certain degree with light compression, but by their nature they compress the signal so heavier compression will bring all of the notes played to an even volume but will squish dynamics a tad. If you run a split signal like I am with fuzz, the squished dynamics are somewhat irrelevant as the fuzz is squish city. But again, I use it to add clarity and a bit of low end boost to a 90%(slight drive from the beta) clean tone. Another use is to set it as a peak limiter, a handy tool to use following synths and filters. I believe for that you want a fairly high ratio and set the threshold to taste. I may be mistaken on that specific instruction. Check OVNILABS site for very in depth info.
The smoothie does an incredible job for my goals. I think the MXR bass compressor would probably be a better limiter. Those are probably the only two compressors I personally would get, though the diamond and empress compressors also intrigue me.
I had the MXR for a while, and really liked it, even if I didn't quite know what it was up to. That's the one I've been leaning towards, and I would like some peak limiting. At least I think I would? Would that stop the squealing noise I occasionally get from my envelope filter? Because there are some awesome settings that sound great until I hit certain notes and it's squeal city.
It would probably contain that, but you may also be sending too hot of a signal to the BEF. Mine used to do some funky things when I would hit or pop the string really hard. Also if the Q is to wide it will get strange.
Yeah, the balance between Q and other settings is definitely key. That's mostly what I've been dialing in.
This beat boy thing is awesome, kinda retro sounding, responsive od and distortion for bass (didn't try a guitar), accurate tuner, you can make one minute drones/loops for your computer or just use the beats for shows or practice, I already have three beats ready for the show on the 30th, this was definitely the best 50 bucks I've spent in a long time, all it needs is just a touch of reverb imo, but that's easy enough with all the other stuff I've got

I use my reverb a lot. It's the digitech one, though I want to replace it with something simpler (it has a "tone" knob... which is something I shaging hate on pedals).
Like all my pedals, it's not part of my usual tone, it really is just used for effect. I don't have any "always on" pedals. Most any time I'm creating feedback intentionally, it's on. Same with when I hit notes for effect. You know, when the guitar is doing a riff in an intro or outro and the other instruments just do one hit and hold it. Any time I use my e-bow, it's on. I often use it for the last note of a song. For many ambient bits, it's on. For the little tremelo-picked and wah'd "lead" I have in one song, it's on.

Sound quality isn't good, I know, but I use the reverb at 2:50-3:15, 10:30-11:55, 19:23 (last note of that song), 22:23-22:50, 25:02-25:29, 30:43-end.
That's how I use my reverb, anyway.
I have a boss LMB-3 which I use sometimes for super squashed compression for heavy pick lines as an effect, or simply as a boost pedal.
Tbh ive found that I would be totally good with just delay/reverb and dirt.

HUGE NAD this past week.
I now own a quarter of all known Vulcans. 2, count em, 2 Vulcans.
This one is a 400 series one, so its 2 ohm stable and came with the OG footswitch. Minty condition but the fuzz doesnt work. Also Laz will like this, GREEN light. Tonally a different beast than my first Vulcan. This new one is way cleaner and has a thunderous thumpy low end, not grindy like my first one. Ill be using this one in the new band. My first one will stay home with No.1 and be my studio queen.
Its good to have a Vulcan back in the PVYHenge.
