I played a ric for the first time today. They sure are nice, and mad Sleep cred as well.
I was wondering, do any of you guys play in standard tuning? I realised today that most of the songs I write are in standard, even though my bass is tuned to C
I'm in standard tuning, but on a 5 string. One of my guitarists stays in "regular" 6 string standard though, so we only play in that range. Occasionally I hit the notes on the B, but not like I would if we all had it.

Play in standard, b standard, and now as of around August everything in my house is tuned to dadgad.
My biggest issue since I've started playing is I generally don't end up writing in the direction I'm thinking. I'm trying to write trashy spacey garage rock, and everything sounds bittersweet and kinda post rock for lack of a better term. One song even sounds like a rejected Elliot smith song. So I had this really bouncy, funny concept, but I can't use it because it makes no sense in the frame of these riffs and songs. And I really wanted to cover a ween song too...

Regarding tunings:
MDT: E stnd, Eb stnd, & a little drop D.
HC: C stnd, BEAD, Drop A.
I use two bases for each band. In MDT, one bass for E/Drop D, one bass for Eb. In HC, one bass BEAD/Drop A, one bass C stnd.

I play almost exclusively in Standard. Sometimes tuned down a 1/2 step, but mostly standard E.
1999 4001v63 in Fireglo. I don't have the ability to play this one first (shipping from a ways off), but I've played a number of Rics recently to get used to the different feel, and I'm digging them (I know there's a lot of variance in necks). However, it's a really good deal on it, so even if I end up not liking it, I'll be able to flip it and be alright with it. It's also through a TB member with good dealing rep, so I feel it's pretty safe

Think this would be worth haggling to $25-$40 and gutting out the head to use as an oversized 2x12? Or turn the amp space into a storage cubby? I did that with an already 1x15 peavey combo once.
Supposedly decent vintage altec Lansing speakers in it.

I had the amp (just the head removed from the chassis) when I was a teenager. Sounded ok, nothing special. Interesting distortion channel. Kind of a PITA because the two channels have separate inputs, but they're not switchable. Can't speak to the quality of the speakers, but Altec made good stuff.
When I was playing slide acoustic guitar a lot I used DADF#AD a lot. I tried a few others, but that was the one that grabbed me. Obviously not far off from DADGAD.
Same here. Sometimes if I'm working on something with someone, a guitarist usually, or if I'm tracking both guitar and bass myself, a piece being worked on will sound better detuned a little, but I rarely tune down a whole step and stay there for long.
Yeah, that sounds like a solid deal. Hell, almost all of them are beautiful to me. Probably the biggest fan of Mapleglo unless it's Snoglo with a black pickguard and black binding--that particular style of Ric is probably the most beautiful production bass ever made IMO.
I have never owned a Ric. Have played many, many, have several Ric-equipped friends and have had one on loan to me in the past.
I did used to own an old unbranded Japanese bot-neck copy of a Jetglo that I loved. And as much as I love Rics, I would probably go for a decent bolt-on old MIJ clone again if I was in the market, mainly because I'll likely never have the $$$ for a real Ric and also due to my well-known aversion to anything other than bolt-on necked electric guitars and basses...

My dually had the same exact issue when I got it.
The cab looks like if I put a closed back on it, it would be like an oversized avatar with that open port. Good cab for the micro terror.
I figure the chassis/amp can be rehoused crudely if it works. Then stored, traded or given away. Might work well as a clean platform for the lap steel if my friend puts more effort in.
That open D tuning, open d minor and dadgad are all like one string half step away from each other so it's an achievable little group of tunings. Open E with a capo.
Yeah, it's a real bummer. I hope it gets sorted out quickly and without me spending a poopie load of money shipping things across the country.
So no real need for this idea.
A vertical cab with like a bottom ported 2x10 section, sealed above it in line is a 1x10 that's optional closed or open back. Then a head that's like a b15 and a champ in one box or something. Basically allowing one rig to play box bass and guitar without interfering with each other or competing much. Both plug in and go.

You'd just need a cover for the top, other than that the chassis is closed on the rest of the sides. The on-board distortion might actually sound pretty killer for lap steel, also I think it has onboard trem or vibrato that sounds pretty good. Hard to remember, it was stolen along with a bunch of other gear 10-11 years ago. I think I paid $50 for the head in the late 90s, so $50 for the whole think seems like a solid deal to me. I had really good results running the line out (maybe it was a headphone out?) into the front end of my Sunn Sentura.
I don't know how I always end up with sunburst instruments, it's definitely not my favorite color. I'd have liked mapleglo, and would LOVE snowglo, but it's too good of a price to really turn down for color only. If I really dig it maybe I'll have it finished in white some day down the road.
