Yeah, I usually end up setting the dirt pedal to be a good bit louder than the clean.

What amp and guitar are you using?

It's a pretty budget-friendly setup as bass is (obviously) my main instrument. It's taken up enough of my cash! Anyway, I'm playing through an Ibanez ARZ307 (7 String Les Paul) and an LTD EC100QM (Les Paul, but with a sweet cherry finish!). They go through a Peavey Transtube Supreme (100 watt version) and a matching cab. Nothing too wild, but should be able to get the job done.

Is there an in between combo around 30-50 watts? I know there's a bassman, but it's a 4x10.

I think the Vibrolux is like 30 watts. Or there' a bajillin boutique ones you could do.

In 4 decades of buying, selling and swapping gear, one of my few regrets is parting with a 1965 Fender Vibrochamp amp. God that thing was juicy.

Yeah, I signed on there after Harmony Central imploded and became a wasteland. Just couldn't hang with them. Got tired real quick of being shouted down and called a plebeian because I brought up the name Squier and wasn't in the middle of having a $4000 boutique guitar built by some luthier from Tone Tone Land.

I got that silvertone vibrochamp copy with a 12" speaker I need to fix up.


So if it's the right model, and I can haggle and fire sell some stuff. I think the Fender Pro Reverb is the amp for me (this week lol).

Lowest noise, good clean even rhythm stuff.

Janglebox? I think the newest version has greatly reduced noise, but they aren't cheap.

Someone here recommended Bone Tomahawk. It was pretty cool.

I think that was me. Greatly enjoyed it.

Yeah, the taste might be pricey, but I never get tire of looking at those Germino and Metropoulus rigs. Sploosh.

Bolt on, in other fabulous news I found an old fx90 delay in a moving box earlier, not sure where that came from

Played a killer gig last night. We all made a few mistakes but they were hardly noticeable from the stage, generally it was pretty tight. Especially considering we played a new tune that was pulled together at the last rehearsal. Played with a trio of metalcore bands. It really made our tunes sound sludgier and heavier which was cool. I had more speakers in my rig than the other 3 bassists combined which was also a fun stage presence to participate in. Finally check out the custom porting on this 810 I was borrowing.

i'm freakin ready now, fx 90 delay is giving me this processed deep tone with a sweet crunch on the open e and keyboard type harmonics, my mantic hulk arrives next week and we are planning another warehouse show in huntington park at a huge artist studio, probably will use the delay with the goth band and on the jamc cover, glad i found that delay at the bottom of a moving box that i was gonna toss that was full of rca adapters

If amps like fenders have a natural mid scoop, how does anything before them shape the tone? Wouldn't the final EQ by its nature cut the mids you try to introduce by pedals or whatever?

well if you boost the mids by as much as the fender cuts then in theory you get back to flat. if you boost mids by more the fender cuts then you get into a mid boost. it's all relative.

I love rolling in with a big rig. Is it slightly inconvenient? Sure. Do people notice what amp you're playing? Probably not. Do they notice that there's a fat stack of amps on stage? Hell yeah they do. Stage presence seems to be overlooked way to often. I mean, we play in bands, we're in show business, people want to see a show, and part of that is visual, you know? And what looks cooler visually than a big stack of amps? Not much.

I believe the traditional Fender tonestack is flat at 2-10-2 (treb/mid/bass), so if you set flat and then anything before that will act as boosting off of that.
