Yeah the Aluball spoiled me. I haven't done traditional prep since I got it. Get you one of these 1/3rd gallon bad boys to use with the Aluball instead of the shaker bottle it comes with. Or the next sized up 1/2 gallon one they sell at Wallyworld in the sporting goods department.
Sorry man, I've been there and would be there again if the wife didn't work. Kids are expensive.

Yeah, I saw all that. $600, while, yeah, isn't cheap, is not a bad price for what the cab is: an excellent cab with good speakers. Someone on there said something like "why's it have CVs?", demonstrating a lack of knowledge on the cabs, given those CVs were indeed factory optional speakers. Some people really like those speakers in there, I'd test it out before selling off the speakers to see if you do as well. I like seeing the group as a bunch of sunn fans, but increasingly I realize it seems like a lot of metal bandwagoners that don't really seem to know much about Sunns, if you know what I mean? Just guys that saw the Model T as trendy. Still, cool stuff on there, hope it works out with the cab! One of my cans was about $300 unloaded, and it's been retolexed (in hindsight not the best deal, but I was sort of oblivious at that point for want of a real 2000s cab)
We did an off-the-cuff 45 minute drone a couple of weeks ago. I thought it was pretty half-assed and poopy at the time but I listened to the whole damn thing a couple of days ago and it's not terrible. Not great, but it's got a great progression from quiet to louder, to loud, to loud + noise/effects freakout, back to quiet to finish. I kept laughing to myself, for an off-the-cuff drone with no effort or planning it came out surprisingly decent.
Yeah. I'm really feeling the pull of wanting it for the sake of having an OG 2000s cab. The guy offered $450 because of my drive, but then quickly returned to asking full price unless it didn't sell. From the email sent, it is far from mint. He described his offer of $450 as "charitable". I'll probably end up passing on it. I am really fighting the urge to throw in the **** it towel and let him know that a 2000s cab in the condition he described is worth about $350 at the most and that my accepting his offer of $450 would be charitable and only reasonable to me because I want a 2000s cab. Also to inform him that at the price he is asking a 2000s cab had better be in excellent to pristine condition with JBLs.
I agree with your opinion of that group. I loled at the people thinking that $300 was too much to ask for that cab, and the guy that said he'd give him $600 for the cab AND the sovtek. I feel like those people are completely unaware of anything Sunn pre-1971. I also imagine that they would vocalize that Betas should never be more than $2-300 but then post one for sale at $600.
I love when bands pull off that musical magic where groove and drone meets. 20 minutes goes by and your head is just slowly banging the whole time.

Yeah, I feel like with people who dig Sunn there's sort of two groups: Sundholm-era Valve amp fans, and later SS/Model T Fans, and there seems to be a bit of discrepancy between the two. This is not to say I don't like the later period, the Model Ts are cool and so are the SS heads, but they seem to have attracted a more fanboy following (again, though, not saying all fans of those amps are like that). On the plus side, it means there doesn't seem to have been quite as much of a price increase for the older tube heads as there has been for the later heads (or the insane prices for Model Ts)
I wish I still had my Sentura II. Got it for $200 on my 16th birthday. Could use a good guitar amp.

I like drone, be it heavy guitar or other instrumentation. Nice synth stuff, classical instrumentation ala The Theater Of Eternal Music/Dream Syndicate...I dunno...not always in the mood for it, but it speaks to me. You could argue that it all sounds the same (aside from heavy/soft or clean/dirty, and dependent on instrumentation, etc.) but I like it. A 20-year old project of mine was an attempt to make glaciers of sound that would just hang in the air, shifting very little. I also brainwave encoded the pieces with a software program to induce delta frequency oscillations. It was hard to work on the music because it kept putting me to sleep.
One of my absolute favorite guitarists, Helios Creed, decades ago said he had once read a paper which stated certain people actually become addicted to distortion and dissonance in music and competing tonalities, so in Chrome and his solo work he always made sure to slather on as much fuzz as possible.
I don't care much for drone or ambient music that veers too near "new age" flutey feelgood music, but some of it is just done real well IMO. "Feedbacker" by Boris, a lot of Eno's stuff...(or the Fripp and Eno collaborations...)
I think one of the things that appeals to me about it is that even if the drones are formless, the brain superimposes patterns over them so you end up hearing things that aren't really there.
Back in the analog days I used to watch static on television screens with the accompanying white noise. After staring at it for a while, my brain would start to see geometric patterns and moving shapes in the static. They weren't really there, but my brain ordered them into existence from the random chaos.
If you've ever listened to Lou Reed's "Metal Machine Music" there's a similar phenomenon where (at least to my ears, and others have reported similar things) you'll hear what sounds like samples/snippets of classical music, people singing, chanting, talking, etc. but apparently there is no such thing on the tapes--just two channels of two guitars feedbacking...

Whenever i try to listen to Sunn my brain adds drums. It can get distracting.

So we've decided to cut ties with this new guitarist...he's really good songwriter and a good guy but his style is just too different from what we all want...bummer cause we like him and we been jamming for a couple months now, even wrote a few cool very proggy metalish songs, but he doesn't got that groove that we are looking for and can obtain easily just as a 3 piece with frontman like tonight, it sounded soooooo good.
It took me many winters to "get" the stingray. I had always disliked them and then one day at GC while noodling it all made sense. I have major gas for a black or white sabre. I love the increased tonal options with two pups while still being able to do that stingray grind. I just love thinner necks and reduced body sizes... I.e the sabre, SB2s, Furies. It just feels right. I do also dig my big ass slab bodied T40 though. The only thing that holds me back is the preamp. I'm just so partial to passive anymore but have limited experience on how the MM preamp interacts with fuzz and dirt. It would be cool to use MM pickups passive but I've heard that they really lose a lot of character and response when passive. I have no hands on though.
I love MMs and have owned a few Rays and Sabres. @eyeballkid --yours is tough as hell! But over the years I have just decided I am not an active guy. I like plug n play. Hell, even a P bass is more intricate than I wanna mess with, and I have wired several to bypass the tone knob.

I was a dyed in the wool MM player for a long time. Dingwall knocked those out of the picture for me.
