SGs I think sound extremely similar to Les Pauls. Maybe slightly different due to the very different mass of the body (the SG being smaller and therefore having less mass). However, I doubt I could tell the difference on a recording.
Gibson Flying Vs and Explorers are pretty much the same guitar electrically. They might sound very slightly different due to the V having very little of its mass around the neck pickup and so forth, but again, I doubt I could tell the difference on a recording. And they'll still sound fairly similar to Les Pauls and SGs.
I don't think the finish really affects tone. While I do think wood does, especially between extremes (a really hard, dense wood, versus a really porous wood), the finish, really?
I think it's cool when a guitarist uses something really oddball, like a Gretsch, for metal. Or a tele (one of Bongripper's guitarists was using a tele when I saw them).
