Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Biggest change for me has been editing myself a lot. Not using phrases like "I want to", "I'm trying to" and "I'd like to" and just say what I'm doing, what is required, what I expect. So not "I'd like to practice once a week", but "must be able to practice at least once a week". I need to do more of that verbally in my life, especially at band practice. I have a tendency to disclaim everything I say before I say it, which I realize is confusing as hell if you're not already in my head and know what I'm about to say. It makes for really ineffective communication.

Guilty of that myself.

Guilty of that myself.

Same.

I need to be more upfront, no wonder my buddy hasn't got the hint that I'd like to start a band more seriously. I keep saying things like "I'd LIKE to write some material when we jam next" or "I'm thinking it would be cool to start a mroe serious project". I need to just straight up ask him if he'd like to start a band with me. It's even more confusing because he's been talking about what he'd like to do for his next band and what kind of members, music, ect with me, and I don't know if he's trying to include me or just wants to share. AUGH!!!

I'm getting better about this. I started turning a corner the last time I got burned on a recording project. Now I'm a lot better about saying no when I don't want to do something, instead of giving a list of reasons why I wouldn't want to do it, since that usually just invites people to try to talk you into it. The last time someone emailed me and said "It turns out we only have $____ to record the whole album, because of mastering, pressing/packaging and artwork. Can you record and mix it for that?" I just told them what my rate was, how many hours that would buy them and what we would need to do in order to finish in that amount of time. Then I offered, "so if you think you can do that, then yes, but I can't guarantee a flat fee for recording the whole album". Which is not a dick move, because it's one of the first questions in the FAQ I gave them for my recording rates that I already gave them. I do still need to get better about it in bands though, hopefully starting off on the right foot will help with that.

Drummer just got back to me, he's in. So we're going to lock down a practice schedule, work on getting the songs I have written down tight and trying out guitarists.

Awesome, I didn't know you recorded Corey. Good luck with the guitarist tryouts!

Thanks man, hopefully we can get someone good locked in pretty quick. I've been doing recording for a long time, but I don't advertise or seek out work anymore. I used to have a studio setup, but I can say now that I just didn't know how to run a business or value my time and skill properly then. So I got f*cked over a lot and burned out. Now I just have my home office setup as a mixing room and I do field recording, usually in the back room of my work, which has a carpeted floor and high ceilings that work great for drum recording. Most of the time I record vocalists at my house. I would love to just be doing mixing work full time, it's way more interesting and challenging for me.

If you didn't live so far away I'd tap you to help me record some demos for a new project.

It's good to be self sufficiant these days. In our latest project two mewmbers keep clamouring for a tracked studio recording. Guitar player has a board in the practice space and we have recently done a new two track live demo. Let the singer take that home and over dub. It's fine for hardcore/punk. There are reasons to go in and track every instrument and at some point we should. Just not right now. This demo should pan out some gigs in the near future. Sounds fine for what it is.

Proximity to bands that would use my services is another issue lol. If you need someone to mix it, hit me up. I rarely ever just mix anything, because mid level bands usually hire one person to do everything, but you can do a lot with mixing, if everything is tracked pretty well. It's kind of a harder racket to break into, since mixing engineers almost always start by working their way up recording, until they get to big enough clients that bring their mixes elsewhere decide to let you mix them. Then people start bringing you work that other people tracked to mix. Honestly, it's way easier for me to mix stuff I recorded, because I already know what's going to be done with it and I'm very clean and careful with my tracking, but I find the mixing to be much more mentally stimulating. That's why I joined that site for mixing contests, just a good way to keep my skills sharp.

Anybody in the market for a Rickenbacker bass needs to contact the following store: Dan's - 328 E New Circle Rd, Lexington, KY, US, 40505 - (859) 455-9858. They have a 4001 Marked at $800 but will go lower. I was passed along the info via Facebook and thought someone here could get a sick deal. It has been fitted with a Badass Bridge and needs a new Pickguard. It has no issues that I'm aware of. I was told that it's in good playing condition.

Same boat here. I feel like I'm way too submissive in my bands. I tend to say "I'd LIKE to..." way more than actually taking a firm stand on something. The end result is me playing songs I'm not even passionate about or happy with.

Case in point, my band's playing a gig tomorrow night and the setlist is comprised entirely of new material that we either aren't solid at playing yet or the songs simply suck. I tried to tell the band that "maybe" we should play songs we've played hundreds of times before for the sake of putting on a solid show since its a competition to score a support slot for an international band. My phrasing basically voided my opinion off the bat.

On a happier note, I woke up this morning to THIS announcement on Facebook!
