Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

I posted some stuff on Reverb; SVPCL, Prolite 3.0 and my Kramer, at the average/upper end of the going rate. Plenty of fallback space to make profit or break even. Either way the total sum will cover dually #2 in full. PM if you guys want a price closer to my bottom.

I guess I'm increasingly disconnected from the non-stoner/crust/doom part of the metal scene.

Ugh. I will never say that in an interview. I may note that I listen to lots of stuff besides metal, but my band is metal. Doom metal. We're metal and we play loud and slow.

When I say "well I play rock," it no longer has those same connotations. But people being condescending over what you want to and how you do it just fries me. Maybe it's more of a perspective thing, like they see it as an entertainment job to placate as wide a swath of people as possible, versus seeing it more as an artistic medium in which to create what you want how you want, whether it has widespread appeal or not.

Interestingly, I see a lot of new "rock" bands that seem to be taking cues from like...'65, '66, you know, small combos, not terribly complicated, very sputtery fuzzes, etc, which I enjoy well enough. But I want to see more of that '68 style, stacks, improv, feedback, loud, etc.

It's rock music. It's supposed to be loud. It's not polite lounge music. It's supposed to be loud and a little raw. "Your band is too loud if you need ear plugs." No. It's just loud enough.

Even with the folk/rock band I play with, we're loud. The main dude in that is like "People complained about the volume when I played metal, and people still complain about it when I play folk, no matter how reasonable I try to be, so I may as well just do what I want." He bases most of his sound on The Band... who were loud as shag back in the day.

Explaining to coworkers that I joined a band this weekend and won't be doing gigs for the next 3-6 months.

Some people want to write music collaboratively and not just be a biologic jukebox.

Never done it for money don't plan to start now.

Exactly. If people want to hear a song exactly as it was on the record, at moderate volume, they can listen to the jukebox. That's not what a band is about, to me.

Decided to finally update the knobs on my Pharaoh Supreme. Now, I can actually see my settings. How novel!

I'm getting ready to build a couple rats. I'd build you one with a clean blend, Reutz mod and diode selection for $100, no problem. All I need are cases and knobs. If you pick those out and buy them I'll do it for $75. If you buy them and throw me $100 I can get my girlfriend to paint whatever you'd want on it.
