Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

I love pedals and I'd have all of them (well, most) if I could. I try to include some weird pedal combos in every song, but then there comes a jam like the one I posted here earlier and it turns out that I simply play bass - DOD250 - amp and let the guitar do all the psychedelic noises. I thought about cutting down the amount of junk I haul on my pedalboard numerous times, but all the pedal companies give me GAS almost every day, so I just swap and swap and swap. To my horror, I have considered getting a bigger pedalboard recently.
I guess I could get away with just an OD, fuzz, bassballs, flanger and chorus, but where's the fun in that? :D

DOD250 dimed into 3120s clean channel is sooo gnar, WUMBO muff added in for WUMBO heavies, but honestly id be fine with just the 250. I cant wait to hear what it sounds like in front of the VTA400 going full tilt.

Oh popped the new emi sigma pro 18 in the folded last night before prac and oh mama, ball tingling. All the low mids and bass. While the 810TX is sub bass and top end grind. They compiment eachother very well.

Y'all just missed out, Guitar Center had them all on clearance for $49 as of 2 weeks ago. I expect that means you should see a couple start to pop up in the assifieds soon enough.

Interesting. I played with a gold sparkly 250 and a yellow 250 of beat up unknown vintage at my local GC into a V4B RI and remember being less than thrilled with the lows. I want to love the circuit so my thought was to build so I could easily swap ICs and clippers. I'll have to investigate modding. It's honestly such a small circuit that if one went the way of cheap knobs and a bare enclosure, building one would be sub $40. Maybe $25-30 shipped from mammoth.

I remember not being thrilled with low end at the beginning too, but it turned out that in the band mix, in a loud environment, it's really inessential. It sounds better loud anyway.
This circuit loses low end with cranking the gain. The more gain, the less lows there are. I use mine with gain at noon more or less.

Cab floor coupling? I don't remember the source but it mentioned floor coupling as a source of a muddy tone. Of course many factors involved like Cab and floor just to name a couple.
We used to place cabs up on milk crates. May try this with the Q10BX-D or just drop it on the moving dolly. Just to compare.
Our practice room seems to have a hollow floor and my tone is just a little muddy. Would be the same for any of the stages we have been playing.
Do you guys have similar experience or carrots?

So Shogun is attending a rad show tonight together and were going to call out the headliner, Moon Curse, Milwaukees staple heavy sabbathian band for like 6 years, to good old fashio rd riff showdown duel battel set. We know them, they know us, should be a good time.

No one to my knowledge has ever done anything like this here, and i think if done correctly could be a big hit and bring a lot of attention to the heavy scene. Make a big event out of it, a spectacle, like a world heavyweight boxing bout. New kid in the block vs the long standing champion veteran. Have a bunch of promo and lead up to it like a press confrence, pull out all the stops.

If you have a hollow stage, then maybe it gives you a boomy tone. Otherwise there is no real mechanical coupling effect. You do get 1/2 space coupling from being close to the floor, but you dont break that until you get about 3.5 feet up.

@askrere the EHX Cock Fight landed yesterday. Pretty darn sweet pedal. I really love the fuzz circuit in it. Fuzz Face that works well with bass and has a bias control which is sweet. I like that you can put the fuzz before or after the wah. Pretty synthy before the wah with the bias set to sputter out. Also it if you go fuzz>wah then set the wah switch to vowel you can pull off some psuedo Bassballs sounds. If you set the fuzz knob high you get some artifact sounds. Wah>fuzz is tamer but cool too and more useful I suppose. I like that it has a bass knob to keep the lows. And you can sort of dial out the wah too with the frequency dialed back The expression input lets you get traditional wah sounds. Smaller pedal than I thought it would be too. I only played it with bass so far, not sure how it works with guitar. Pretty slick pedal with lots of sounds.

Not doom related, but I got in the latest piece of my surf rock guitar rig. A single channel 50 watt brownface Showman style amp. Built custom on a tight budget by Frugal Amps out of Vermont. Dude was super nice and helpful and we figured out the essentials of the tone and features I wanted out of it and did a couple small mods as well. I haven't had much time to play with it and it's a totally new tone direction for me, so I've been figuring it out all week. I finally got a good recording of a sweet tone with it and my Strat last night (can't get my Jaguar to sound quite right at low volume with it, probably because the pickups are a lot weaker). I thought I'd share since I know a few of you guys like this stuff. I recorded a quick mellow surf riff idea with it. Sounds even better cranked up loud, it's meant for playing live and not home recording so much. Also using my DIY FET based Reverb tank that Nick helped out a bit with on the build. I made the cab, which isn't quite finished.

I also just bought a decent 60's Fender amp style tremolo pedal on Reverb today, the Stutter-Lite from SolidGoldFX. Reverb is having a 15% off pedal sale today and Chicago Music Exchange is participating, who have a ton of inventory.
