Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Regarding the DOD 250... can this be compared to a Phat Phuck B? (or a Demon) Anyone have both?

I haven't owned the latter two, but I have had friends who did and played through them and directly compared to my older DOD 250. The Phat Phuck B is more of a straight up dirty boost, hard to compare. The Demon is kind of similar, but still different if you're comparing very strictly. It's tighter distortion, both are fairly dark (can't say if the new 250's are this way or not), the Demon has a bit more low end, but honestly you can't hear a huge low end cut live or recorded with the DOD. The difference is all in the "feel" to me. The DOD is a little more loose and fuzzy, the Demon more tight and grindy. Neither are huge extremes though, they're fairly similar in tone compared to wildly different tones like a Muff, Rat, etc.

Speaking of NPD...

Hey guys, what do you think? 4003 rick copy. Can anybody speak to the quality/sound of the chinese ricks? Not sure what these generally go for either.

I had a Chinese Ric and it was really good in its own write, quite a bit different than my 4003, though. If you get one, you'll need to put some work & parts into it, too. There's a good YT vid on a comparison that features the axe I ended up getting and subsequently selling with a real Ric.

The issue with those ones is that the bridge pickup is quite a bit closer to the bridge than on a real one, and so it won't sound like a Rickenbacker. I think that price is kinda high, too.

Very informative, thanks.

Aha, that makes sense. Appreciate the response. Found some similar chinese rics through Aliexpress for around $300. Too bad about the pickup location, glad I know.

Sidenote, I'm about to post on my local. craigslist looking for a drummer to start up a S/D project, but have never actually tried starting one myself. Any advice for a noobie when it comes to starting a band? My area isn't exactly filled with a ton of S/D'ers so I want to get it right. Figured It'd be best to find a drummer first and start to build some chemistry before finding a guitarist.

Where you located roughly?

One more semester on the books, feels good. Taking the summer off.

Went morel hunting yesterday with successful results, a few pounds worth. Had steak with morels sauteed in butter on the side. SO good.

Someone teach you mushroom hunting? Or you just using google images.
