Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

We have a show tonight with local heavy legends The Lions Daughter. These guys are rad dudes and legitimately one of my favorite bands.

ALSO! Surprise! Dually 2 was scheduled to land tomorrow but she is in today! That means I have to double down and get that series box built ASAP. Also have to run around town to borrow a truck, pick up the cab, unbox and test it. I have the CL400 loaded and ready to go. Gonna make some LOUD test sounds out at the parents house in the woods.


Question for those more knowledgeable. Last night after practice when unhooking the amp, I noticed that the 1/4" plug was getting pretty hot. Cause for concern or no? I've noticed them getting warm with my 2000s as well, but not as warm.

I haven't ever noticed mine getting hot at all. You aren't using instrument cables are you?

Really expensive but i have had 0 problems with them so far and I've had them for years. And like i said they aren't hot at all even over a 2 hour full volume practice.

I made the cable. I'm unsure to the specific size of the wire, but it is just as thick as the store bought speakon cables I've had.

Last nights practice was around 1.5-2 hours in a garage. The amp(peavey) didn't seem to mind, I just wasn't sure how normal that was or if it was simply a product of the conditions I was playing in.

Yea, pretty sure I am, hashing it out with him.

Trouble is he doesn't know what ohms its rated for and says it works so he either plugged it into a random cab or no cab, also said it's great sometimes scratchy hiss other times... So I'll see if he'll wiggle and I'll get me a project.

It's hard to speak of the basses inherent tone because it had a preamp in it and without a bunch of exposure to different basses with the same preamp, it's hard for me to distinguish between wood and wire. The neck felt wide for a 5er but was very thin. Solid as a rock it was. The neck was finished which I wasn't really a fan of, but with a NT, I guess it's all or nothing. It played very well. The action felt a bit higher than I care for in the upper registers but was just right in the lower regions. It had very strong and clear lows and the pre could dial in an aggressive mid bite. I also played around with a Marcus Miller style scoop which sounded good. Controls were vol, pan, bass, mid and treble with 3 mid points via the toggle. He told me he only used Fodera, Glockenklang or Bartolini preamps. I'm not sure which was in it. It probably weighed around 9lbs. I didn't strap it up but Andy said that balance is huge to him and that he won't play a bass that dives, so I'm assuming perfect balance. The woodwork was immaculate. It did have a few dings but I'd imagine that bass is several years old.

The core was Walnut with layers of ebony and poplar burl I believe. Wenge top with exhibition grade cocobolo. The neck was like 7 or 8 plys of wenge, padauk and another kind of super hard and heavy wood that I had surprisingly not heard of. I can't recall its name.

I played two other basses of his. One was his 3rd finished bass and it had an amazing figured redwood back.

The third was the lightest bass, nay guitar in general, that I've ever held. 35" scale four string made of swamp ash with, and get this, a genuine Brazilian rosewood top. Super rad. I think that bass was sub 6lbs. I wouldn't be surprised if it was less than 5lbs.


They all sounded great.

It very well could be. With 100+ basses, I can't imagine he keeps up with seasonal adjustments on all of them even if they are one of the instruments he keeps out of storage. At the same time, I've noticed a similar situation with a lot of NT basses and with it being primarily wenge plys I doubt it moves all that much. I think it's because the fingerboard sits so much closer to the body than on a bolt neck. That could be in my head but it has been consistent across all of the set neck/NT basses I've played. Just a hair higher than a bolt neck past the 12-14th fret.

Dually two has landed just in time for the show!

Murphy's law stands true though. The cab sounds excellent and is functionally and cosmetically perfect. I have two issues that I'll be bringing up with the builder. The first thing I noticed right away was that I requested combo speakon-1/4" jacks. He said he could do that but the cab has regular speakon jacks. I had to make an emergency run to a music shop to get another 1/4-speakon cable so that I could use the cab for tonight's gig. Fortunately they had an adapter for $10 so that saved me $20 of the cost of a whole cable. The second issue which may or may not be under the builders control is the weight. Now of course dually cabs are light so ultimately it's not a huge deal, but I paid the extra $100 for an okoume cab. They are supposed to weigh(as presented on the various builder websites) 55lbs. This cab weighs like 63lbs, only 5lbs less than my Baltic birch cab. Now I understand wood varies in density. My BB cab was advertised at 72lbs so I guess I lucked out with a 68lb cab. But I was honestly expecting more of a weight difference when they are advertised at a 17lb disparity.

It's not that big of a deal. Had I known that the variance of actual weight could lead to a negligible difference and not a 25-30% reduction I would have saved the $100. Lesson learned. My only concern is that since the jacks were obviously overlooked, I wonder if he forgot the order was for okoume and built it with BB anyway.


Overall I'm happy. They sound great and that's the most important thing. Ran through the series box built, it tested at 7.3 ohms so that's cool.


I also managed to see the labeling on the glass in the CL400 and they are EHX tubes so that's cool. I'm more confident in their lifespan now.

I'm ready to rage.

The D-180 is quite a bit lighter than an SVT, not really difficult for me to get it on top of my 2x15.

The speaker cable end that's plugged into the amp usually gets pretty warm for me. I guess it's just from having the amp turned up so much.

Yeah, 85lb amp plus 15lb chip board rack case is a little unwieldy. Doesn't help that the rack only has one strap handle on it. I keep meaning to get a nice lightweight SKB case but it's hard to spend that much on a case when there's so much other fun stuff out there.

After playing the Millennium for a week I really dig it but other than the preamp I think I prefer the Gbass. Going to sell one of them.

Also, I got the etched Hail Satan back together and I get no signal but everything appears as it should be, maybe something got damaged sitting in garage. I wish I understood pedals/wiring/soldering a bit better.

Yeah. That's why I built a case out of spare plywood lying around for my D-180. That it's rackmount, to me, is one of the downsides.
