Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Hey there dudes... haven't been on TB for awhile as I still just can't get the swing of this new interface. Its still painful to my brain to figure out whats going on, but seeing as its not going to change back I might as well get used to it. Gonna try to keep up with this thread again though, I miss yinz!
What drove me back this morning is I got some new pedals in the last few weeks, totally rethinking things as my bands getting ready to play its first gig next week, and I need SIMPLE toys at my feet to pull off playing and singing at the same time (and dicking around with a vocal effect floor box). So my goals for tone was to have an always-on overdrive, heavy saturation fuzz available, and the phaser+delay at the end for spacey psychedelic parts.
For overdrive I was using a vintage Rat clone for the longest time, but realized without earplugs it has a nasty harsh attack on each loud note. I wanted some attack clank here to stick out but not this kind that kinda hurt the ears. Bought a Tubescreamer clone from Laz's guitarist... it brought the low gain and drive that the Rat had while being a bit smoother in the attack, and it didnt feedback when I turned and faced my rig. Recently got one of those Joyo Ultimate Drives ($32 Japanese OCD clone) and I havent used it with the band yet, but playing alone at full volume it seems to be just a tad "better" than the Tubescreamer. It has more drive without adding more attack clank, so smoothing out the high end a bit better. Have to A/B them in practice and see which comes out on top.
In Fuzz land, my Grey Stache has still been the top dog without much competition... but I just picked up a Woolly Mammoth clone to try, the fuzz sounds to me a bit tighter and less mooshy than the Muff (dont know if this is good or bad without playing it with the band) however I'm really liking the pinch/gate. Set very low, its not a noticeable noise gate or digital sounding, just... tightens up the sound. Our band sound is sort of raw/bluesy, with some intentional looseness, so hard to say if I'll want to use the Mammoth for our songs... but it sounds soo good! Either way I'm holding on to this pedal, only cost me $60 and sounds like a Mammoth to me.
Oh, and you wouldn't believe how close my Rickenbacker and T-40 sound to each other through this setup.

I went through the same thing with my Rat. Wanted a lower-gain drive with some attack - it delivered that, along with a lot of clank and LOTS of feedback. Since we were practicing in a small basement I was never more than 6-8 feet from my rig and the feedback was a serious issue. I ended up getting the EHX OD Glove - which is another OCD clone - it's great. A little darker, a little less harsh, pretty much no feedback even at high volume, no low end loss unless I dime the gain knob, even then it's not nearly as bad as the Rat was.
I still have the Rat - a US Made Rat 2 that I added an LM308 to - but I don't think I'll be using it in any bands in the near future. Might be cool for a guitar rig. Seeing the prices people ask for a 308 Rat on Reverb.com has me contemplating selling it. There's a nice 3 tone sunburst Squier J here at work that's calling my name. Rat would more than pay for it...

My Greedtone OD has been a godsend for me. Its the only overdrive I've played through that's made me genuinely happy. I prefer to play with a low-gain drive on throughout my songs and the Greedtone achieves this flawlessly but if I need a harsher boost the "More gain" channel will give me that in an instant. Admittedly, it can get a bit out of control but, as some of you have affirmed, what's an overdrive if it doesn't jump out at you?
Still really keen to try out some Fuzzrocious goods. The Demon King pedal with the feedback loop is particularly piquing my interest. I love me anything that will make crazy noises.

For original 308 Rats or clones with a 308? My clone "should" have a 308 but I never actually cracked it open.
Haha I remember months ago me and you talking up our Rats as low ODs. I had the EXACT same situation, in our old practice spot with more air space it was fine, but in an enclosed environment / tight quarters it had those issues. Can't stomach that inconsistency... the OCD clone sounds like the Rat with better compression/limiting or whatever from the gain.
I've started favoring OCD based overdrives over RATs for slow, heavy stuff. I still favor my RAT and similar pedals for faster stuff, with light OD, especially with pick playing, where I want some attack/clank. The OCD has a bit more saturation and smoothness to the gain, for better or for worse, depending on what you want out of it.
I've read and heard a lot of great things about the Greedtone. John K loves the hell out of that design, along with the Fairfield Barbershop, for that elusive "tube-like ovedrive" tone.

Yeah, I remember that conversation - if I walked across the room (carefully stepping over gear and cables) it would be ok, but there were so many times that I kicked it on only to be blasted with squealing feedback, then immediately turned it off and went back to the OD on the PD7 that I eventually decided I needed a different pedal. I dug the OD on the PD7 but it was pretty scooped sounding so after some research I went with the OD Glove. Super happy with that one.

I love pretty much all theme parks. How can you not have fun on rides? They're even better as an adult swilling $7 beers!

Yeah, it just sounds weak if the clean is louder than the distorted. To me, anyway.
I've been thinking about replacing the dome knob on my Peavey with a chicken head or some other kind of knob with an indicator on it, to make it easier to drop the volume the same amount every time. I've gotten so I'm pretty consistent, but it would be easier if I had a visual idea of where the knob was in its rotation.
Re: going to theme parks with wife/girlfriend/partner/whatever.
I figure, even if you wouldn't go by yourself, presumably you like hanging out with that person, so really you're just hanging out with them, at a theme park.

Last summer, in my old band, we did a long weekend where we drove to a Friday night gig, crashed, did a few hours' drive to a Saturday gig, then got up early and drove to Adventureland for Sunday. One of my favorite memories/weekends of being in that band. Nothing better than rolling, haggard and hungover, out of the band van, frightening some families, getting your drink on and hitting the rides rides rides!
am i the only one who goes to movies by themselves? nice solo time to relax, collect my thoughts, eat garbage, and hopefully watch an awesome movie.

If nobody else is interested or available, I'll see a flick by myself. The mrs. thinks that's weird, but it's not like you have conversation during a movie anyway.
I don't think it is weird unless you choose to sit right next to someone when other seats are available or if you jump in the open seat between two people trying to show they are not a couple at the movie by leaving an empty space between them. Sure would be funny to see happen though.
Random thought: the Galaxy theater by my house has a full fast food-style restaurant inside. You can order a burger and chicken strips and take them into the theater. Awesome for the dude snacking during the movie, not awesome for the broke hungry dude sitting nearby.

Per theme park discussion...used to love rollercoasters and rides but im starting to get nauseous form tight circles flips, and twists, as I've gotten older. Not barf nauseous but enough that I don't want to ride some things. But I'm a big people watcher, so lots of people and a bench in the shade and I'm good for a while. Haven't really been to one since turning 21 so beer may make things a lot more interesting.
