Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Perhaps it should've been "Stomer/Doon: Sartori's Samsara".
My Samsara?!

I came around to doom\stoner late in the game. I was a grind & death guy that always liked some of the sludgier stuff like Obituary and Bolt Thrower. I love big gnarly riffs and thick guitar sounds, but what drove me away initially was the retro feel of it. I remember hearing Cathedral's Ride when it first came out and liking the idea of it, but not the vibe around it. That was 20 years ago and I can deal with stuff like that now, but I've always wondered why 70s retro worship is such a big part of doom and stoner metal. Personally I hate the look of the 70s, don't idolize any of the gear from that period, and really only like Sabbath in terms of music from that era.
Can retro be removed from doom\stoner and have them still be what they are? What is the attraction to the 70s aesthetic anyway? For ten years people looked like they couldn't find a mirror and had gone color blind.
SubRosa, Yob, and Neurosis don't really go for the 70s aesthetic. Neither does Chrch.

:B

I know you're being facetious, but I have had people argue with me and try to convince me Sabbath aren't doom metal. I pretty much told them that they were wrong, and that Sabbath is THE prototypical doom band. Modern doom may sound much different more than 40 years later, but it all started with Sabbath.

Makes my head spin that someone who professed to be a "metalhead" would argue that point.
Well, yeah, some people might say that. But those people are wrong.

If you you do, cool. If not, not a huge issue either. We have 90+ pages of historically being the longest running, most visited, most viewed thread series on this forum. Even if the majority of the TB community is unaware of that. We can adjust to this thread. ;)
Indeed. But the old one is back open now.

Just hoping that people who spend time arguing with strangers on the internet "whether or not Sabbath is really doom" don't vote.
Who are you, again?

Too bad none of them are eligible for the Presidency, being as they weren't born American. I think they would do as good a job as the two major candidates...

This does remind me of a morbid conversation I had a few weeks ago. We were wondering how many people had to die before the governor of California would become president. Namely, we wondered how Schwarzenegger could have been made President, since he's unable to run for it.
Iommi/Butler 2016.

Heard on NPR this morning China created an entirely synthetic opiod that's like 10x the strength of heroin (sold as heroin). I guess people on the streets are OD'ing and dying in record numbers these past couple months... And OTC anti-heroin overdose meds aren't strong enough to help unless you triple the dose.

I assume no one here even sets foot near that kind of trash, but just a PSA...
Yikes. Sounds scary.

That's what croaked my niece 2 weeks ago. Fentanyl is what it is.
Fentanyl has been out for years, though. My dad was prescribed it when he had cancer. Maybe it's a super concentrated form of it?

Sorry about your niece, man. That really sucks.

An Even Deadlier Opioid, Carfentanil, Is Hitting The Streets

I saw the "I'm out" comment, but didn't see what specifically ticked him off. Maybe it was one of those straws that broke the camel's back. The drama that unfolded wasn't directed at him, nor was any moderator action from what I could tell.

He seemed to be frustrated that the thread was infiltrated and reported by people that do not have anything to do with the S/D community purely out of spite after a disagreement outside of this thread. Also the fact that we are in one of the most respectful threads and haven't caused any real concern on the site but we were still shut down over offenses that pale in comparison to rule violations that literally infest the rest of TB.

It's cool for P&W to talk about Jesus but if anyone else does it's the hammer. Objectifying women is also tolerated but make sure you watch your language. This is a child friendly environment.

The things reactionary bias can teach someone.

Ah, ok; that makes more sense. It was spillover from another thread that cross-pollinated the suck.
