Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

For drop a I used 105s, but the new band is drop c so I might go back to 100s. Ive always had a lighter touch and play closer to the bridge pickup.
My bad, it's 55-115, DR DDTs, but as I recall you're not a fan
yeah, did not like them. still looking for the perfect C# set. the standard 5 string sets i find are too stiff, and the 110s are just a little too loose. I'm trying the la bella drop tune set tonight.

Got a Traynor yba 200-2 about a week ago. Only have 2 rehearsals and one gig on it (apart from home practice). Pretty cool amp, gets shockingly loud, but doesn’t do clean at any volume. For the gig, I used a boutique 6SL7 pre, into the amp in on the Traynor. That gave me a bigger, warmer low end and more clean headroom. Still not clean by any stretch at gig volume, but sounded cool

Problem is Ive got 4 basses and I cant remember what two of them are strung with. Should probably be writing this stuff down or investing in a gauge reader. PfffffTttt!..............yeah.......... (disappears into smoke)
Word....I loose track of what strings are on x y and z bass, not to mention the pile of open, barely used and take off sets lying around. I think I'll start putting a piece of painters tape on them to label what's what.
Please report back, I am interested in trying them out.
Im seriously considering selling my weber ab200 inuse for backup and getting a yba200.

For the price, I couldn’t see not trying one out. Got mine off Reverb with a nice cover, in pristine condition and new tubes for $525 shipped. Had to at least check it out. I’ve been running a very nice (Reiner) 6SL7 tube pre with a power amp for a few years, but a tube power section to go with it is really sweet and totally different. Very happy
put the la bella down tuned on my lakland P. feel is closer to rotos than DR so rough and a bit grippy. i imagine that will go away with use. a little harsh sounding with lots of finger noise. the 111 string does sound a bit dark compared to the rest, hopefully they even out with time. nothing spectacular so far but the tension is great for C# standard and drop B. we'll see how they age, no real verdict at this point. curious to hear how they sound with the band but we're playing a Lemmy tribute show this month and practicing a bunch of hawkwind songs so i won't get to use this bass for a while.

Picked up the bass with the La Bella Drop Tune this morning and noodled around. They feel better already, less sticky and more consistent. the "E" string was quite a bit darker and thumpier initially even when not plugged in. without plugging in this morning they seem more even. The E string is more lively, i'll plug it in and see how it sounds tonight. Last night I also raised the pickups on the E string side a bit and that helped bring out the attack on the E string and made a difference while plugged in.
