Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

That seems to be every thread outside of a select few, such as this one.
You got it. The horde of 'Professional Gigging Bassists' are aghast that running around in the crowd with your wireless set up is *gasp* cheesy. The nerve! How dare I (and others). I'm sure it goes over great with the patrons of the ol Burger Barn when you play your tasty bass solo amongst the happy hour crowd. They have many happy customers you see, so don't question the coolness of what they do.

I'll have to check that thread out.

To the guys that are using various rat pedals, I admit I've never used one for bass or guitar. I've heard them and they sound cool, just never had one. Would picking up a proco be worth it, or are clones worth dropping the dime on since I've never played one.

I enjoyed the new Sleep. I really liked the mix.

Any albums you guys really liked the past year I should look into? Every once in a while I go over to the youtube channel Stoned Meadow of Doom, but everything I click on sounds kind of lazy (as ridiculous as that sounds haha). Is it just me?
I liked Somali Yacht Club.

SYC is damn good. Stoned meadow has a ton of great stuff. I've been digging a lot of summoner lately.

That thread sucks. Nearly every thread on here, except this one, is like 10+ pages of dumb dumb dumb, it makes me embarrassed to even post on this forum.

Anyway, I got my Trace Elliot V-Type back from repairs and plugged in the Turbo Rat with the new Turd Bird build with DiMarzio DP120's at rehearsal last night. Other than needing to still tweak the new bass (raising pickups a bit and fixing the tone knob), fine tune the TE, and play through more than 1x15, the Turbo Rat sounded pretty good, but not amazing. I had the distortion set at maybe 85-90%, but it added a nice bump to the upper mids, and a slightly perceivable roll off on the lows.

Is it a Trace V6 or V8?
In high school that was my dream head.

Nah, it's one of the lowly hybrid jobs. I think officially it's a V-Type model 5001. Looks like:

Personally, I find most Rats unpleasant on my bass rigs. Guitar rigs are more forgiving for that tone. That being said, there are plenty of bands that rock Rats on bass and/or guitar who sound fantastic. It always made me try Rats.

For what it’s worth, even as a very picky Rat fan, I had to go with Dunwich. The Volt Thrower sounds great, though it took a while for me to dial in. I thought about selling it many times.

On the other end, my guitar Rat is a cheap Eno clone I got for $20.

It’s also helpful to note I like smoother tones typically, and harsh treble is not my thing. So if you’re into more of that, you’ll probably have an easier time finding a Rat that you like. Good luck!

To be honest standard rats never did it for me, modding one or getting something like a cat tail just to have the ability to remove the clipping diodes made a massive difference.

Thanks guys for the suggestion. I think I might have to try one. It's been ages since I turned it on but I think I remember the zoom ms60b having a rat on there.

First album was great, the followup... not so much.

Stoned Meadows of Doom always suggested Natraxas as a followup, I ignored it endlessly then realized their one album is shagging amazing, same for.. uhm..poopie.. somethingsomething Blues Exchange? Samsara?

Natraxas is dope, Samsara blues experiment as well. I love the long trip one. Great one to daydream, jam to, and have for background music.

Good to know. I may try to find a cheap clone or original to see if I dig the character before delving deeper.
