Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

I'm just glad that sleep is out there putting stuff together.

I gotta say the boneshaker is pretty cool. I see where some may be meh. Within minutes had an SVT sound, and a couple more had an almost cocked wah burp. Definitely a keeper for studio use. Takes a little bit to get exactly what you want and it's on the higher gain end at CCW, but will work excellently for amp sims when recording.

Does the DOD 250 reissue suck out any tonez, or is it overly fizzy etc.? Lately I've been using no pedals and just upping the gain on the amp for the always-on dirt. If I need fuzz/distortion I have lately used either a Blower Box or a Boss ODB-3 that is tweaked more aggressively.

The thing I like about that DOD is the simple layout, because my go-to was an MXR Distortion+ back in the day, only 2 knobs to deal with. The MXR killed the low end though, this was way before anybody modded stuff and before the boutique pedals really started. I'm re-thinking things, and leaning towards less knobs = better.

hey guys, another fuzz/dirt/OD debate!

Less knobs often makes things better just because you'll fiddle less and be less picky about tweaking it just right. If you liked the dist+ but want more lows check out EQD white light. Has a weight knob that adds in tons of lows and it's basically a dist+/dod 250.

The new 250 is great though IMO, all the way from boost to gritty on the edge of fuzz. Especially with tubes, loves pushing tubes.

The new 250 definitely eats bottom if you turn it up too far. I have it split off into a loop into some effects that sometimes work better with OD in front of them (phase, wah, etc) and then bring it back in with clean to preserve the bottom end (and then both into fuzz and out into amp).

I thought if you start diming one of the knobs you get some gnarly low dist/fuzz? It's been some time since I've had mine, still want another. I only used it on guitar, but it had some heft.

I have the gain to 9, and then level to match unity into a solid state amp. It definatly qualifies as grindy but as I said, I don't like the sound solo, but mixed in with some clean it changes things nicely and sounds great, enough to give the amp a goose and sound dirty but not fizzy.

it's like they are trying to make it soooooo stonerrrrr. from the songs to the release date, the grinder that comes with the record, the titles. if someone wanted to make a caricature if stoner/doom this would be it. it used to be electric wizard but sleep has out stoned them.
This is a silly statement. Sleep has always been the most ridiculously stoner of all stoner bands.

I received the DOD 250 the other day. I don't notice low end loss unless the gain is dimed. Reminds me a lot of the mxr microamp I used to have when I played guitar eons ago. I like it in that it adds overdrive without taking over the sound of your bass and amp. Also, I agree with whoever upthread said it mated well with a big muff. It certainly does!

I might check that one out if I can find one cheap. I can get the Blower Box to kind of do it, it's the 1st gen with the vol knob on top, and lately I haven't been getting what I want out of it. I've been using the gain stage on whatever amp for the OD, once I get my V-Type back I might abandon pedals for OD. Maybe I'll bust out the Turbo Rat and revisit what it can do for the fuzz/dist.

Had it last year. It was great for playing with a pick, not so much for finger playing. All around it had too much treble for my taste.
Still an awesome sounding pedal, just not for me.
Pretty much the same here. Too much fuzz and treble for me. I prefer fingerstyle, never tried much with a pick. I have heard many people make it sound glorious, but it’s not MY tone if that makes sense. The only Rat (not that I have tons of experience) for me so far has been the Volt Thrower.

I still have a Blowerbox on my pedal board though it doesn't really get any use unfortunately. i could never coax out of it the sounds i wanted. I also play fingerstyle so maybe it is that. I prefer running my rat clone which after some mods i think is very similar to a fuzzrocious rat/cat tail.

I enjoyed the new Sleep. I really liked the mix.

Any albums you guys really liked the past year I should look into? Every once in a while I go over to the youtube channel Stoned Meadow of Doom, but everything I click on sounds kind of lazy. Is it just me?
I liked Somali Yacht Club.

Thanks Kriegs! I'm from Austin so The Sword is inescapable here. The last album of theirs I liked was Apocryphon.

Thanks briq! I missed new Ufomammut? Sweet!
I really liked Mammoth Weed Wizard Bastard/Slomatics (split) and Elder.
I'll have to check out the rest. Probably put Monolord last on the list. Don't remember being to excited by their stuff in the past.

I definitely more inclined to like things on the psych or sludge side.

The ufomammut is sweet, par for the course for them.
Throneless is very slomatics/conan-esque
Messa and Sunnata both have a pretty eclectic sound
