There’s a “John K mod”/cap swap to brighten it up a bit; it’s supposedly stock on newer models.

In this spirit, I had a chance to play a Ric 4003S5 this week. I’m way more versed in fivers than Rics. As a five string, it holds its own. The hardware is great - schaller tuners & 3D bridge. The neck had a pronounced flat feeling down the middle and the fingerboard edges and fret ends were less rounded than I’d like. Sample of one, though, so it may just be the one I played. I’m not familiar enough with Rics to say it sounds like one or not. I could definitely get sounds I’d use, though.

Never knew it was so narrow on tone focus, been looking at trying more dirt lately and it was one I plan to try. Good tibit.

Pork loin is one I've been wanting to try for ages. I think I'm gonna try the pickle/loin combo one. I may try to find an older one to help darken up my jazz. I always have to turn down the highs with it.

On a side note, the EB Cobalt flats help keep the bass thick and clear, but tame some of the extra brightness. Not dark or lacking in highs at all, just not overtly bright like rounds. Oh and modding the pup to series does wonders.

DOD 250 has never done me wrong for exactly what you're doing. I've noticed it opens up a bit when gain is cranked though.

Guys I need some suggestions! My drummer will have surgery tomorrow, I want to send him some great books about music to read while he is hospitalized (it will be at least 7-10 days...)
He already has something about death metal and grindcore, I'd go for something else so I don't risk that he already read it. Anything touching extreme and experimental could be of his interest! Any ideas? It's better if there is an Italian translation, he's not fluent in English
But just give me some good titles and I'll check for the translated edition :)

It's odd. I used to love that old warm vintage sound, yet I find myself leaning more heavily on grind over thump, hence the GK. This week will be my first practice with this particular band while using the GK, so we'll see how it goes.

I've mentioned it before but if you want a face full of 'well defined sludge', this pedal brings it (MXR Super Bada$$ Variac Fuzz. I was working out some new guitar parts for a new album and brought together old tech (1967 Bassman), with a new set of vocal chords (Bassbreaker 212 cab) an unsuspecting accomplice (G&L ASAT - it's a Tele with G&L famous MFD pups... MUCH more aggressive, dark and driven than standard single coils) and there was no bad setting on this pedal. VariAC all the way down gives the darkest, quagmire of sludgy goodness and as the sustain rings out and the signal clears, the angry darkness of of the fuzz takes over and adds a sinister overtone as it bares its teeth.
Try. This. Pedal.
(Yup, it works great on bass too! You just need to be sure to add some treble before the pedal, especially if you are down tuned or playing the lows on a 5 or 6 string)

Hi Kriegs! I used to frequent the G&L thread a while back. While I've mostly gravitated back to Gibson, I still have my L2K that I use from time to time. Those MFDs don't mess around, and I'm surprised I've never given their guitar counterparts much thought when it comes to our music. Time for some experimentation!

I'm not sure that they entirely fit in with this sub genre, but has anyone listened to the new East of the Wall album? Definitely on the more prog side of things, but they often get lumped in with a lot of other sludge/post metal type of bands. Their older releases seem to be a bit on the heavier side, including the vocals. Amazing bass work and tone, especially on the newest release.

The MFD's definitely don't mess around :cool: Their effect on guitar tone is even more pronounced than on bass. They give even more tonal range than their non-MFD counterparts and much more responsiveness to adjustments to either the instrument's Volume or Tone settings.

Yeah, Brett is great. I think their current bassist used to be one of their guitarists if I remember reading correctly but I'm not sure. He has some play throughs on YouTube. Really good stuff

Guitarist bought a Marshall 1960b to complete his jcm800 stack. Seriously toying with a trip to the local music go round to relieve them of their 1960a. GK and 412 for lows, superbass clone and 1960a for the dirty fuzzy highend. Win!

More is more!

EDIT: definitely going to do this. But first, I really need to sell off some stuff I don't use!

Yeah. I was planning on selling a couple guitars but here I am working on another pawn shop project. I picked up an Ibanez ATK300 for $60 while I was on a road trip this week. I'm soaking the bridge right now because none of the saddles will budge but the rest of the bass cleaned up pretty good.

Plus I think I'd rather have the Tyler SB clone atop an old peavey 215d or 412. Always wanted one of those! Plus, cheaper than a Marshall cab too.
I need to clear the musical instrument related clutter. Hopefully this motivates me!

Also also, I never had an instagram account, so I'm a newb to it, but I started a band account. I figure we have time before we are gig ready, so I should be up on this poopieby then.

Any other social media that you guys'/gals' bands use? Facebook still a thing? I haven't had an account there in ages.
