Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Did you catch Heavy Eyes at MOTM?

I did. They got to play after dark so they had the Mad Alchemy light show, which was awesome both nights.

My highlights from Monolith on the Mesa...

Day 1:
YOU (largely improvised set)
Weeed
Tia Carrera (more improvisation)
Om

Day 2:
Yatra
Communion
Palehorse/Palerider
Castle
In the Company of Serpents
Eye

The bass player for Yatra had a great tone with minimal effects. It looked like she was playing a Fender Jazz with MM pickups...has anyone seen a Jazz like that?

The bass might have been a Fender Modern Player Jazz.

I'm checking Ghost Buffalo tonight with Matriarch and Palehorse/Palerider (two of my favorite local bands).

Got to play a Microtubes 900 for a bit this weekend and man I want that amp now. Anyone here own one?
I haven't had the chance to play one yet, but I am interested in one as well. I dig my Mesa D-800. The EQ is similar. The MT has the wiz bang drive channels DG is known for, but the Mesa has some nice voicing controls. Tough call.

I've had the D-800+ for a couple years now & I really like it. At the time I was also considering the DG heads, GK's smaller class D stuff, and I had a Aggie TH500 prior. Ultimately, I opted for the Mesa because it was the best foundational sound with lots of EQ flexibility and the HPF. I can always add a DG pedal, an EQ/tube pedal for a bit of growl/warmth, or the THDI if I want that token Aggie warmth. My thought was that I couldn't totally get away from the Tonehammer sound or the DG sound if I went that direction for the head. YMMV of course. I think they are all quality amps...

This week's report is on the Pumpkin Pi, an op-amp fuzz by Stomp Under Foot.

If you want to know what this sounds like on guitar, just take a listen to the Smashing Pumpkins album Siamese Dream. Nope, I'm not kidding. What's this got to do with the doom or stoner genres? Stick with me.

This pedal is based on Billy Corrigan's late 1970's IC Big Muff. Using the IC op amp to shape the fuzz gives this pedal a very chainsaw like quality to the fuzz, much like the op-amps of the BOSS HM-2 give it that unique sound. To my ears, even with the Sustain (gain) turned all the way down, this pedal give less of a fuzz tone and more a of a distortion sound.
I didn't pick up this pedal because I'm a fan of the Pumpkins or Billy (I like a few songs but am not a huge fan) but because I was interested to see what an op-amp fuzz could do for me and my tonal bag of tricks.
I first tried the pedal straight into my amp with nothing else in the chain. It sounded ... ok. It felt like many other guitar distortion pedals sound when you try it with a bass... like the bass was just too much for it. When I hit my B string is when I realized that this was not a bass pedal. so, that's when I gave up...

Nope! I realized that there was some really great sounding stuff going on but there was too much going on all at once to get any sort of really good, usable tone. I simply added in my handy dandy Mix Blender into the signal chain! I put the Pi in the effects loop and blended the tone into my dry signal and BOOM!

THAT was what I knew I was hearing in that jumble! That chainsaw doom grind layered with the dry signal of a low B, you know, the kind that makes beings from the depths of the pit look up and ask "Hey, Glabbershorn the Thrice-Damned, did you feel that? It felt like a blasphemous doom chord being played with a really sick amount of distortion."
While the Pumpkin Pi more than proves itself worth of a spot on your doom/ sludge/ stoner pedal board, a very important take away from this story is also, "Never dismiss the utility and effectiveness of blending your dry signal with a your dirt tones to being out the best of both."

Don't keep us in suspense about what you're GASing over.
I've had a hankering for a Lakland 44-64 PJ for a years. The Black with tort PG drips Geezer vibe. Normally they are little expensive, but I saw one floating around for a good price. The problem is that I already have two pretty nice PJs (Peavey Forum and BC Rich ST3) and I'm not playing (gasp) anything Doom\Stoner related anymore.
I've always had a my eye on a Sire Miller jazz. Just to try one out. Here on TB someone is selling a white one with a black PG. I've never had a really solid jazz bass, or white bass.
Then I also saw a Spector 4LX TW. I love the #%$& out of my Spector 5LX. Having a backup would be a good idea. $1600 is nothing to sneeze at though.

I've been trying to save up for a Schecter Hellraiser C-1 Hybrid that I can tune to B for my current project to help me write. I keep putting that off too. Damn it I need to win the lottery!

tort? i thought you hated tort. or am i thinking of someone else?

i almost pulled the trigger on the same lakland but it was white with tort.

Speaking of deals, there's one of those recent CLF G&L L-2000 retro headstock basses on Reverb for about half of what they were going for brand new a few months back. Edit - dude posted it on TB classifieds too

I just bought my 2nd T-40 (after selling one a few years ago) so I'm done......for now :cigar:

I only like tort with black. It is as close to red as you can easily get. Regular red PGs look a little weird. Before Geezer got his sig\custom Lakland it was essentially the bass I'm looking at.
The Lakland PJ design is the most comfortable, beefiest sounding PJ I've come across. If I was in my old band still I'd be all over it. My current work just doesn't vibe with vintage designs.
