Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Those old school shops might have it. Bring it with you if need be. They'll know exactly where to find it if they are anything like the shop near me. Otherwise you can look up the value and order them online. Either way, they are cheap.

Wait there's a shop like that around here? Man I've been looking in all the wrong places. There's a few components I'm looking for that I haven't been able to source without paying stupidly high shipping rates...

back from a week of herding cats taking my scout troop to camp.. you guys talk a lot.

apropos to nothing here, i ran into another scoutmaster who i hit it off with, tattooist from Jersey. he was telling me a story about back in 1994ish he opened for sleep and the guys crashed at his place afterwards.

anyways, he (the tattooist) had an old dean 12 string that he'd removed the some of strings from half from, swore that matt pike thought it was the coolest thing ever. says pike literally played it all night long raving about it, and swears up and down that this was the inspiration for that signature 9 string guitar.

he followed up by saying he'd never try to claim this, nor that he even thinks matt would probably remember it, but he's confident that thing was born from inspiration of his guitar that night.

i just thought that was kind of a cool story.

Yeah the pace has been turning up the last couple months. Seems to be accelerating still too. That's awesome though, great story.

@br1qbat thanks, gonna hit them up this week.

Question for all you guys/gals:

Do you tend to stick to one base sound and occasionally use effects or do you change up EQ or basses depending on song feel or whatnot.

For those with 2 pickup basses, do you like being able to flip between the two (or combination) mid song/jam?

Trying to gauge interest on having more sounds, or being able to switch between two different quickly without fiddling with a bunch of knobs.

I always feel hesitant to answer questions like this as I haven't played with people in 20+ years, and only dug this back out a few years ago to work with some finger issues I had.

However, I'm a big proponent of VVT with a three way toggle switch. You can set both pickups for your "main" tone, but still very easily, with minimal knob twisting, use the switch to go between three primary sounds.

IE, I favour P/P basses. I tend to keep bridge at 10 and neck at 9 to break the sort of scooped mids of both pups on full, however with the 3 way switch I can very easily flip between all bridge modern and bright, all neck thick and classic Precision, and then the sound I like of both pups together, which is just a little bit grindy and an aping of that Ric twang.

To me, the three way toggle makes things as versatile as a blend or adjusting two individual volumes, but so much easier. Click. Click. Click.

I used to think I would, but on my two pick up basses I tend to set it and forget it. I might adjust to get the mix right, but I rarely wanted all of one and none of another pickup.

I stick to one sound. Blend slightly to the bridge, add a bit of mids (active 3 band EQ) and I’m good to go.

That being said, I like having other tones at my fingertips. I can easily adjust a tone to my liking via only the blend knob. Typically, it’s either just towards or away from the bridge. That single knob can do just about anything I need tone-wise for my bass besides the mids, which I never change.

Once in a great while, however, I do change my “main” sound and find a new one I prefer, but I’ve been on this one for 5+ years.

Got my bass up and running again, whiteout now having to go to the store for a new pot like I thought I would! The clarity of this new preamp astounds me. My other bass (same model, but 6 string) sounds dull and lifeless by comparison. One more tech question, though - I want to change the mid frequency on my preamp, as it says that can be done with a cap.

https://bartolini.net/wp-content/uploads/Docs/NTMB_Wiring.pdf

On the 3rd page of that diagram, it says that you can put the PCB in series with the middle wire of the mids pot to change the frequency - the PCB didn’t come with my preamp, so can I just wire the cap directly to the lug and the wire? Will that work? Thanks again, and I’m so glad that I got this thing wired up and working right.

I rarely switch pickups or just use one. With Rics and Js I roll the neck pickup back a bit just until I hear the tone change. Never mess with EQ, once it's set that's where it stays. Other than that, some song use fuzz as the base others use OD then I'll throw in phaser, filter, delay, trem or whatever in the parts that I think call for it.

Thanks for all the quick feedback so far, much appreciated. Anyone else that sees it and wants to chime in it's never too late.

Good to see a lot of my thoughts being echoed.

Just had time to watch that reverb bass dirt video...yeah lot of weirdness in it. Almost every pedal used has bass specific versions why not use them? I mean I dig some guitar pedals on bass but he kinda threw a lot of stuff out there will confuse the eff out of people new to dirt on bass...

On one hand I don’t have any problem showing the original/non-bass versions of pedals. There’s often a reason they were popular enough to warrant a bass version. On the other hand, there’s often a reason a bass-specific version exists. They could have done a better job of “X is a popular type of Y (drive, fuzz, distortion), and Z is s good version for bass.”

My worthless 2 cents:

“Do you tend to stick to one base sound and occasionally use effects or do you change up EQ or basses depending on song feel or whatnot.”

Yes and No. I usually have one basic tone and use effects like spice for a less is more approach. I do switch between passive jazz, active jazz, and active Warwick $$. To compensate for this is use an MXR bass Comp as a limited set to the passive jazz and an MXR bass pre for the passive Jazz as well. That way they are tonally similar to the Warwick as well as keeping the volume level consistent.

“For those with 2 pickup basses, do you like being able to flip between the two (or combination) mid song/jam?”

Yes. I constantly mess with my volume and tone knobs.

“Trying to gauge interest on having more sounds, or being able to switch between two different quickly without fiddling with a bunch of knobs.”

That’s where the mxr preamp and different basses comes into play for me. It works well in what I do, but I’m sure this wouldn’t work for everyone. Ymmv, well it definitely will, I’d guess.

Clear as mud. Lol

I run my Jazz the same way. I also back off the tone knob about 1/4 of the way. I generally am a set and forget guy.

The pork loin is always on, then as the song needs, I use phaser, flanger, or the wah. I love simplicity.

Thanks all this is great feedback. I have noticed when I tend to do hired gun work I will use multiple tones. Mostly based on what the song asks for, but have a basic tone for original work and then use different effects and sounds for specific parts.

This is what has me at a crossroads. I'd like to make some thing that can be tweaked to a sound that one wants. More tweakability the better, however keep it simple.

On the other end, I've noticed that with my prototype, I love being able to switch to a mostly different sound on the fly. I really like how I can get completely different sounds...granted I haven't been able to do much testing in a mix, just jamming with tracks at the moment.

I have a feeling I'll have two distinct models. One that can have lots of tweakability. The other that has some of that range but can switch between two drastic sounds with just a switch. What do you think?

I'll have some clips here soon and some explanation of the ideas.
