Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

So, you bunch of morose mopes, how about something more uplifting?

I was just casually perusing the classifieds and daaaaaammmmn, basses have gotten spendy.

Think I'm going to have to go the Warmoth route to get the shortscale of my dreams.
They seem spendy until I try to sell one ;)

I have been thinking more and more about short scale lately. I've got an Ibanez Mikro five-string and I love it, but it gets kinda' cramped down around frets 12+. Obviously it's short even for a short scale, so I've thought about whether a more "normal" sized short scale would be right for me (30" or so). I don't know why I'm talking about this...I guess I like talking about short scales? Anyway...

What are you looking for in a short scale?

Primarily, I play SS due to wrecked shoulders. If I try to do the reach on a 34" to the first position, it's immediate pain. My current bass is an SX SS P-bass, and it's pretty much all I want. It's perfectly functional for my needs, after an upgrade on tuners and guts, but I always like new shiny stuff.

I know in my head, and in the venom sac that passes for my heart, that 80% of people are good, and 10% are really good. The other 10% just seems to be the ones I hear about. From the lowest to the highest. When people say I should concentrate on the good in the news, I tell them that I expect people to do the right things and it shouldn't be newsworthy.
In my most d!ckish moment I presume that I'm smarter, or more observant, or have seen through the matrix, or something like that.
It is hard to see everyone else's context.
I think sometimes it isn't really a matter of other people being dumb, as much as their goals not being aligned with mine, or the goal is so far removed from action being taken to get there that it seems nuts. Decisions can be made by people that don't know, or don't care, about the work that needs to be done to achieve a goal.
That is about as positive a spin as I can put on it.
There is a lower level of intentional ignorance, or petulant obtuseness, that is harder for me to accept. I don't want to run afoul of the moderators, so I will leave it at saying that it seems like there is a notable, and possibly growing, portion of the population that engage in behaviors, or adopt philosophies, that fly in the face of logic, critical thinking, and common human decency. It seems evenly split between those that are bamboozled into these things, and those that adopt them explicitly because they fly in the face of logic, critical thinking, and human decency.
My wife and I have this conversation often. When I was a child, I wanted to be a grown up so I could get away from the bullying, name calling, and social pecking order games kids play. I keep waiting to be with the adults. I'm 44 now, and realized some time ago that there are no adults. Just children in decrepit bodies, with more responsibilities, and more expensive toys. The practical and sane adults I thought existed was I was a child are the imaginary stuff of a mind still capable of hoping.

Very eloquently put.

I don't consider myself an above average guy in intelligence, or morality, or anything else. And yet, I still look out at what goes on and wonder "Am I alone in seeing this?"

I've done it before, and I can feel a difference in just a couple of days.
One thing I definitely do to maintain my sanity is stay away from things like Twitter. It is a dumping ground of human $#!+. I don't understand why anyone uses it.
I also tend to stay away from comment sections, and have become more measured in my responses when I do use them. I've matured enough to realize that telling someone "What the heck is wrong with you? Are you stupid or something?" isn't going to win anyone over. No one has ever read a comment on the internet that is diametrically opposed to their worldview and suddenly changed their minds.
I have also learned to ID trolls and immediately back away from them. There are those out there looking to be jerks just for the sake of being jerks. They say inflammatory things because being the heel that is booed is still better than the no one that is ignored. Then there are the literal bots and foreign actors that are trying to sow discord by picking fights and intentionally making people upset. I work in IT. I know these things exist. It is information warfare that we are simply not acknowledging. When you see a comment that is full of barely formed sentences, random capitalization, and doesn't respond in a meaningful way to anything said, just back away. They want you to engage. Don't.

I practice all of this, but I'm still only sometimes able to maintain my sanity, unfortunately. I avoid a lot of the news, but there are many issues I feel I am obligated to pay attention to; those that affect the future well being of my daughter, at the very least, maybe myself, if I am feeling arrogant that day. Even a small dose of "news" is enough to make any decent human being sick. I can't not pay attention to the world around me, as living in my own diluted, ignorantly blissful reality, isn't real, and it isn't living. I wish I could just look out for just me and mine, but the damage we do when we are only concerned about ourselves is devastating to others. Anyway, none of this is really a reply to what you wrote; those are all good strategies for surviving a broken world... just sharing my general feelings on the world around us.
It's not getting better and sometimes music doesn't seem like nearly enough of a distraction.

Definitely!

For short scales I have a Gibson Thunderbird SS and an Ibanez Mikro. I keep the Mikro at my desk at work (because it's small & doesn't take up much space) for wood-shedding or noodling while my automated scripts run... or if I feel like forgetting the world for a bit and just losing myself in some music. The Tbird has quickly become my go to favorite and I find myself picking it up more than my other basses. The reason? It feels and plays more like my guitars, most especially my Gibson Firebird (who'dathunk?!). Other than that, the sound/tone/whateveryoucallit, is right in line with any of my other (34ish" scale) basses.

I actively avoid the news. Life is better.
Me too. I barely know who the president is.
I used to be a lot interested in politics years ago, I read a lot, watched a lot of talk shows about politics etc.
But I have been screwed by life so hard in the last years, that I really can't bear any more fuel for depression. The world can even explode for me, I don't care anymore. Nobody helped me, ever, and people in general don't give a f. So why should I?
