Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

I’m honestly pretty open. Since changing up my head and cab, I’m pretty much starting fresh again with tones. I went from Aguilar AG700 with a GS212 to a GK 400RBiii and a GK212 neo. I still have my Darkglass B7 Ultra, but it’s got a pretty specific use anymore. It doesn’t really factor in to my normal setup. A muff style fuzz would be pretty awesome I think, but I’d be more open to suggestion than set on any one fuzz.

My suggestions as a fellow GK fan:
Pork Loin for OD (DOD 250 for another flavor)
Pharaoh (Supreme if possible) for Fuzz (Carcosa is good, and also affordable, too).

I like the idea of Rats, but so far only the Iron Pig has worked. The Volt Thrower was pretty good, but the IP won for me.

Watched some demos of the Pork Loin and the 250. Seems like those could be the ticket for overdrive. The Pharaoh sounds good as well. I watched a video of the Bassquatch while I was searching and really dug it. Plus it fits with my look lol.

I have a Pork Loin. It is a nice always-on dirt pedal to add a little rumble to the low end. Not super high gain, kinda muddies up your attack.
The Pharaoh is a well respected fuzz. Never tried one. I do like my Grey Stache fuzz. Never really got to use it, but it is nice.

In fuzzier news, I have a Behringer HM300 arriving today before practice. For anyone who doesn't know, this is a clone/copy of the increasingly expensive Boss Heavy Metal HM-2 pedal, aka swedish death metal in-a-box.

Interested to see how it does.

i rehoused one for a buddy in a standard aluminum box. jumpered the two antiparallel diodes wiring as a quick and dirty noise gate, replaced a bunch of clipping diodes with leds
i LOVED it on my bass
added the tone stack from the hm2 to a fuzz build and that gets me a similar sound but not as tight a feel. love it through my acoustic 140

EGC neck on a Epi Tbird. It looks the business and plays great, worst neck dive in the world though. If I put in some different pickups it might sound better but I didn't feel like making the routes bigger. Has a couple of Lace Alumnitone Bar pickups in it, because aluminininium

Russian Circles are a top-5 band for me and last night's performance in Denver was the best I've seen from them. When I left, I realized I have a problem... every time I go to a show, I leave GASsing for something. Currently, it's a smoke machine and aluminum neck guitar. On the heels of the Boris show last week, it's a double neck with aluminum necks... and a smoke machine. Does anyone have an aluminum neck guitar or bass? Thoughts? @oZZma, I saw you all over the aluminum neck thread.

I own a couple Kramer aluminum basses. I’ve had em for years and no problems with neck dive OR throwing into low tunings or anything because there’s no truss rod to deal with!
Easily the most aggressive sounding bass I’ve ever heard plugged straight into the amp, with great low end response to boot
They’re a DMZ4001 and 450B respectively, the 80s ones I played had bad neck dive

I’m looking into buying a robot graves neck for my next project if that says anything

That sounds... excessive? Granted, I don’t do much stacking, just my GK Rails Pedal feeding my other dirt, and nothing is set extreme in any of my stuff. For what it’s worth, I definitely prefer Rats and Muffs to be at their more OD-like settings. Most Rats are too “clangy” (maybe that’s the word?) for me on bass. But the attack knob on the IP makes that pedal. Really lets me dial in the exact amount of “clang” I want.

Tech question: If I put EMGs in my Marcus Miller with volume volume bass treble, could I put a kill switch where the active/passive switch is to disconnect the battery so it wouldn’t drain?

I’m trying to find a use for the open hole if I go the EMG or active only route.

you could put a switch there to minimize battery drain but i would not use it like a kill switch while playing as it may pop through the speakers

The hm300 is a cool little pedal. Never played a hm-2, but afaik it is the same circuit. Lots of lows there, and the mid control goes from scooped to adding this upper mid snarl from about 2 o clock onwards. Definitely not as loose as the superfuzz, but it can certainly do gnarly.

I still don't think I'm going to use a fuzz or distortion often over top my pork loin. I really like the pushed gk/pork loin combination.

Right now the board is sleek: tuner, pork loin, small stone, wah.

My bad. I meant it more like a battery kill. Not something I’d use while playing. I’d just use it for set breaks, etc.... It’s just and idea right now. Not sure what I’ll end up with, but I know I want a change from stock. EMG seemed like a good choice just for ease of wiring. I’ve officially hung up my soldering iron as I suck terribly at using it and finally just gave up. Lol

like anything else it's muscle memory. I'm rewiring guitars i built a few years back because they're a mess lol

Well, I finally got some started on a bunch of pcbs I had kicking around here. got four enclosures painted the other day and just started populating these PCBs. Still a few random bits here and there left to go that I didn't have in my backstock so tomorrow is going to be a scavenger hunt for a bunch of resistors, caps and diodes.

2x GGG muff boards
3x 250 boards
1x random fuzz board i had laying around.

At least one of the ggg's and 250s are going to get smashed together into a box and has a home already... but the rest...? Not sure on them quite yet. A friend of mine who plays guitar might be snagging at least one of these but who knows. Dunno if any of the rest will be forsale or whatever quite yet. Weeee shall see.

Mine dives a lot, I use an extra large rough leather strap to keep it in place. The Peavey is better balanced, maybe because the body weighs a ton.

Definitely the same circuit. I’ve played both back to back, though it’s been a while. My memory is a little foggy since the HM-300 was my friend’s, but I have a few actual HM-2s. The big difference between the original and pretty much any clone I’ve found is the clones seem to have more treble content on the whole. My theory is that the originals’ components are degrading and I prefer that tone. Still, not a huge difference, and likely indistinguishable in a mix. For what it’s worth, the Throat Locust has been my favorite clone, but it’s not nearly as budget friendly as the Behringer. I’ve been debating getting a Behringer just because.

Other notable and cheap HM-2 clones if you’re interested:
DOD American Metal (either version)
Arion Metal Master (my 2nd favorite for bass)
Danelectro Fab Tone (heard, but never confirmed, it was a clone)
TC Electronic Eye Master
BYOC Swede (If you’re good with a soldering iron, there are a few DIY kits around)
