Welp, blew up the speaker in the 115 cab I keep in my practice space... Got too awesome with it.

Speaking of Talkbass taboos... I'm gonna stick a new speaker in it and not worry about porting or optimal F3 resonance of the cab or porting or whatever.
Also going to look for another cab to go with it. I got tired of dragging my combo amp (just using the speaker bit of it with the amp bypassed) out there to use with it so I hadn't taken it in a while and well. Yeah.

Gonna see what I can dig up around here now I guess, lmao.

Epi SG - I believe they make a long scale version - could be cool.

I think they recently stopped making them altogether.

So I am seriously considering this pedal. Blackhawk Amps Mithrandir Octave Fuzz. Would let me further streamline my board as it has a clean blend and and octave blend. Have had crazy issues with pedals every single gig. If I can get my Small Stone behaving, I'm going to run just tuner->pork loin->mithrandir->small stone and call it a day.

Anyone buy anything from Blackhawk? I bought a cool shirt a couple months back, but that's it.

The bass wah fscked itself at the gig Friday. I only use it for 1 short bass 'solo' so the phaser can be used there instead. Right now the Joyo phase 90 clone is there as the switch on the small stone is iffy. I prefer the chewiness of the SS. And my bass's straplocks somehow came undone twice while playing. . . We still survived the gig!

What kind of fuzztone do some of you people prefer? I've been wanting to get another octave fuzz lately, but I've been leaning towards a lot of sharper, trebly tones. I used to be a big fan of a big muff with the tone knob rolled wayyyy low, but it just doesn't do it for me anymore. I feel like it needs a RAT afterwards to boost the presence back up

Any other make/models you'd suggest I look at that would fit the genre? Maybe an Epi SG?

I've seen doomers with everything from P-basses, Jazz basses, probably every Gibson make, Ricks, and even stuff like tobias or shecter basses. Themarshall brings up a good point about probably wanting long scale for the sake of tuning stability, but bass choice is in the eyes of the player for the most part. Pick something that suits your style and makes you want to play every time you see it

This 100%. You'll learn to make most basses/pickup configurations work for you tone wise, so maybe scale length is a big factor if you're down-tuning a lot. Other than that, I second the idea of a bass that feels good in your hands and inspires you to practice/play.

I've been leaning more toward more aggressive trebley/high middy dirt lately myself. A lot of dirt winds up sounding too dark and thick for me, I have a theory that a lot of bassists start with a brighter tone and then want a dirt pedal to add thickness and heaviness to it. I start out with a very dark, thick clean(ish) tone to begin with, so I have little or no need for dirt that adds a lot more darkness to my tone; it just winds up muddy and gross sounding.

As far as octave fuzzes go, this may sound obvious but have you tried a B:Assmaster or knockoff thereof? I find them to have a pretty bitey sound.

No I haven’t, but I’ve heard tons of demos on them! I’ve been looking at superfuzz/foxx tone machine variants but do you have any suggestions for “knockoffs”?

The Black Cat Bass Octave Fuzz is a pretty great B:Assmaster knockoff, it sounds about as good as the standard B:Assmaster and is cheaper. The Diabolique is nice also, but it deviates from the sound of the original quite a bit and might not provide as much bite as you'd like. I don't think the Rabbit Hole FX aMerkin is exactly a B:Assmaster knockoff, but with it's octave up switched on it sounds sort of similiar. Also quite a good pedal.

Personally I like the Germanium B:Assmaster best, but unless you're super lucky it'll probably cost you a few ducats. I'm pretty sure it's out of production.

I currently use a superfuzz clone I built from a kit. I use it with a Boss LS-2 Line Selector to create a clean blend. My 'clean tone' is the Way Huge Pork Loin, not too dirty, but fat slight overdrive. I then get meaty lows and the superfuzz adds in a fullness and upper mids/treble

Blackhawk is solid. I have one of the Gandalf v1 boxes. It’s a single knob, so no need to learn a third language to read the knobs.

The Hiero Effects BEAD is also a solid sub for the B:Assmaster, especially if you want a clean blend and small footprint. They make a germanium one and silicon...

Danelectro just did a reboot of the foxx tone machine and their French toast is a foxx clone also. All done by the original foxx tone machine designer and current head of Dano, Steve Ridinger.

I haven't used the Mithrandir but I have owned a ragnarok tube preamp from him and I currently own one of his Odin 120 amps (Matamp gt120 based.) I like both of them

I will say his amps have a long wait time, mine was over a year. But that makes sense, pedals are faster to make with higher profit margins so I'd concentrate on them too.

Never heard of this, but as a huge fan of Tolkien, I’m more than intrigued.
