Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

found this how-to from a few years ago.....looks like a lot of hassle.

Yeah that's about how it went. Quicker than building a pedal from scratch, but honestly, boxing pedals can be tougher than populating the board. I had been dorking on pedals pretty hard when I did it and was really comfortable with it. It'd take me a bit longer now.

Re-housing stuff can be a total nightmare and as such I try to never do it.

In actual music news, Wifey and I saw Year of the Cobra and some friends local acts last night at a tiny venue here in the south bay. Amy's bass tone is friggen killer. Super chunky and thick, it was awesome. The turn out was meh because it was a Sunday night and San Jose/Cupertino aren't exactly hot beds of loud stoner rock.

Hoping they make it out this way, on the bucket list for sure.

Bit late to the party but add me to the nerd list. Love me some sci-fi and fantasy. Huge Tron, Star Wars, MechWarrior, Tolkien, Asimov, and Terry Brooks fan.

I nerd out on most everything I get into. I was always the nerd on the sports team and band too haha. Oddly though, I was the least nerdy Chem major...

Need to get back into reading, thanks all for a good list to start with.

In other news, I will be delving into opamp fuzz soon. And started to get lost in looping the other day. Gotta build a bigger pedalboard.

Finally got around to looking for a driver... So I ran the Thiele and Small parameters on a few drivers and settled on a [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]. Hopefully this one sounds better than the other one that came out of cab. I'll be trolling CL for something else to go with it so I don't have to push it as hard. Prob something sealed as those seem to "yell" or at least have a punchier lower mid range which is what I want vs a ported cab. idk, i'll see whats out there.

had the cb158 in my sealed 215s. lots of power handling and pretty clean sounding but pretty aggresive in the mids (500hz range) which got kind of honky if i was not careful. needed a prarametric eq to smoothen them out a bit.

Great to know, this is going to be in a ported cab. I tend to bump the mids in that range a lot so this might work out pretty well. Clean is a huge positive!

I found an enclosure that should be just tall enough to mount the PCB w/ the pots vertically, and still be able to use the original PCB's for the jacks & switch, etc. without de-soldering anything. Just in case I flipped the PCBs around to find the best layout and mocked it up in a box just for laughs. Not sure if I care about rewiring the LED off the board, I'll probably just leave it there. I used a MXR Dist+ without any LED for years so I guess I'm used to it.

But, but, but.. you promised you were going to put any old 15 in there wily-nily to freak out the squares!:bawl:

Speaking of random speakers;), I gotta give Mesa a call. The factory parts retailer doesn't have speakers that will work for my cab which is 4ohm (2 8ohm 12's in parallel right?).

So either I buy 2 powerhouse 12's and the cab will no longer be 4ohm. Or I see if the 8ohm WA Scout neo speaker is compatible. If it doesn't get overworked compared to the stock speaker, I think I'll go this route as it could save some weight. Same power handling supposedly.

Any thoughts? It has crossed my mind to just grab 2 "random" 12's of CL on the other hand.

Better than I. Criminal Justice and Sociology didn’t help me not being a nerd. Lol Just a people nerd instead of hard sciences. I don’t math.

Yeah I hate math. I'm great at mental arithmetic and trouble shooting, but eff math. The insane pages long equations I'd be working with are a major reason I didn't go further than undergrad.

I'm pretty sure just mentioning that in the amp forum would still cause that to happen..

"omg its not a GK speaker everything its going to
Pretty sure this type of reaction accounts for at least 50% of the reaso why I have GAS for an old Gibson Eb-0L longscale. The one with only the big honking mudbucker, that nosedives, and has the loathed 2 or 3 point bridge. Lol

Cool! You have found the most unacceptable bass around. Looking forward to your NUBD.

Pedalthought: Somebody really ought to slap an HM-2 eq section onto a Brassmaster style fuzz circuit. Is there a good reason this hasn’t been done, other than the fact that I am, as far as I know, the only person who wants it?
