Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

She's a cutie. How long have you had her?
About 7 years. She was bred in England, then taken to India, where she lived in the US State Department compound. My cousin inherited her when she took over the quarters, and she couldn't take her on the next assignment so we adopted her. She has a passport and everything.

You do know Raymond is a pillow with feet, yes?

Yes, but those feet are also equipped with claws. It's got teeth in there somewhere, too. I've been known to attempt to draft him into pillow duty in my more jubilant moments. When that happens, the moment does not last. In my defense, he is one soft mother scratcher. Sooo tempting to try to use him that way, but he does not appreciate it.

That cat's probably drawn more blood from me than any other cat I've convinced to tolerate living with me. He's not really vicious, but strong in body and spirit. We don't argue unless it's meaningful to both of us. He climbed a tile wall the one time I attempted to bathe him after he got into the attic years ago. Still have scars from that. I don't recommend it. Bathe some other cat and tell yourself Raymond is clean.

I _think_ I got my first bass in Christmas 1984, It was a gray 3/4 scale bass made by Cort from the Sears catalog. I loved it until my bass teacher told me about a Masada lawsuit jazz bass that was sitting in the store that I could actually buy with my lawnmower money. Good bass teacher, and a good salesman. He mated someone with a product they could afford. Had that Masada bass for years, and wish I still did.

So, other than a few foolish years where a bass wasn't available to me (but yeah, still had a guitar of my own :bag:), ooof, I should be better than I am. Running close to 36 years? Heh, I still loves it, I'll keep going.

Dear, Stoner/Doom Bass Thread and Denizens Thereof, please forgive me. I totally missed the boat on Tool. I just bought 4 of their albums in penance. Thank you, Tendril.
Aenima is, IMO, one of the all-time great albums regardless of genre. Everyone seems to go crazy about Lateralus (Parabol/Parabola is absolutely incredible, to be fair) but I might go so far as to say it's their third-best album (Aenima being first and Undertow being second). Well, now I know what I'm listening to today...

I was missing a back plate, but I think I should become a professional luthier

I went through Undertow, and am halfway through Aenima. I still have to listen to Lateralus and the latest one. I'm liking the music, can't understand the lyrics (which is fine), and just getting familiar with the whole vibe of what they are up to. As of right now, Undertow is in the lead over Aenima, just because there is less "experimental' stuff going on.

honestly, I'll only still to undertow or opiate, although the ladder half of aenima blends fantastically.
Exactly. And its been while since I listened to any of them. On Fridays I try to only listen to vinyl, but might need to make an exception, as I don't have any tool on vinyl. I remember skipping school to go buy Undertow on CD... back when albums were released on Tuesday and you had to actually buy physical copies to listen to the music.

don't skip opiate. super raw and so clearly the foundation for what came after. you almost need to listen to tool in order.

Remember standing in line at Ticketmaster outlets to buy concert tickets? I had some fun times waiting in the Upstate New York cold overnight for tickets.

I recently picked up opiate on vinyl; was damn cheap. Such a great record. I enjoy the rawness more nowadays compared to their more refined stuff. I still debate picking up undertow on record. Its funny how they've faded for me since they were such an influential band to a young arbitrary.

Big fan, but yes the production I think is a big contributor to why the later stuff has faded a little on me. Still damn good to me, but I could easily see how the stuff before Lateralus is preferred by many. Lateralus has a close place to me and that probably helps it weigh in higher for me, since I tend to be so sentimental.

The last two I flip flop on. I think it's amazing what they've composed, but I prefer the raw more.

Same here, I gotta find opiate on vinyl and Aenima for that matter.
